Old Dawgs show off new tricks to take open boat division as Albany Surf Craft Challenge enjoys record turnout
In the men's event, the Old Dawgs showed the Young Pups some new tricks as they completed the course in 1 hour and 39 seconds to pip their club rivals who finished in 1:00.54.
Cin Cin won women's category, finishing in 1:04.02 ahead of champions for the past two years North Cott Impact who crossed the line in 1:06.20.
The 12km course ran from Princess Royal Harbour to Middleton Beach, finishing at the Albany Surf Lifesaving Club in Ellen Cove.
The event overall attracted a record field of 330 competitors, participating across 48 surf boats and 90 surf ski paddlers.
Albany's top performers came in the women's masters where Fat Gannets and Wedgetails followed Scarborough's Scarboro Storm home.
The Gannets were just one second behind the winners with Wedgetails a further two seconds adrift.
City of Perth's City Black won the men's masters, their 1:01.32 giving them a seven-second advantage over second-placed HCM from Fremantle.
Just over a second split the top three in a tight under-23 men's division, the Screaming Seamen of Secret Harbour edging out Scarboro Sharks and Cottesloe Crushers.
Mullaloo dominated the women's under-23 race, taking all three podium places.
In the open division of the surf skis, City of Perth's Kent Jenkinson recorded the quickest paddle of the day with his effort of 55.48 giving him clear water over Albany's Nick Walker, who was second.
The women's open was taken by Mullaloo's Amanda Hunt in 1:10.26.
In the open double skis, Alasdair Marsden and Sasha Small from North Cottesloe were victorious with Albany's father-son combination of Jason and Jesiah Bresanello fourth.
The traditional 2km run was held on the narrow sands of Middleton Beach from the Albany Surf Club, with under-19 surf ski champion Owen Chaloner and Jenkinson the top two.
Walker, who was the race director, said the challenge had been an important milestone for the newly updated clubhouse.
'It's a centre for event hosting, post-race catch-ups and a celebration of what community service, volunteering and sport can achieve,' he said.

West Coast champion Jeremy McGovern forced into sudden retirement due to ongoing concussion issues
West Coast Eagles star and five-time All-Australian Jeremy McGovern says he's 'gutted' but respects the decision of the AFL's concussion panel that ruled he should retire on medical grounds. The decision for McGovern, 33, to step away and end his 197-game career was made after 'extensive consultation' with his family, club leaders and medical staff. But ultimately the recommendation from the AFL's concussion panel was something the superstar defender couldn't ignore. McGovern has only played six games this season and none since round 9 when he suffered concussion after an incident against Melbourne. 'It's been an absolute honour to pull on the West Coast jumper for the past 15 years and it's something that I will forever be grateful for,' McGovern said. 'As much as this isn't the way I would have liked to go out, I respect the decision. 'I'm gutted I don't get to pull the jumper on and run out one more time, but sometimes this is the way the game goes, and I am forever grateful to the West Coast supporters who have also shown me love and respect. 'I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with my career over the journey. 'My family – Mum and Dad, my brother Mitch, my wife Madi and my three kids Hudson, Marlee and Lewie – have been my biggest supporters as well as my friends who have been amazing through my whole time in the AFL. 'To the club, I can't explain how much you have given me over my time here and I can't thank you enough for drafting a fat kid from Albany and giving him a crack. 'I've always loved the game and winning a premiership is every kid's dream, but the lifelong friendships and relationships you build through footy mean more to me than anything. 'I will forever be indebted to West Coast and I will always bleed blue and gold.' The McGovern decision comes as Essendon youngster Nik Cox awaits his own findings from the concussion panel that in recent times has sent Collingwood premiership winner Nathan Murphy and Melbourne star Angus Brayshaw into early retirement. McGovern earnt the first of his five All-Australian blazers in 2015 and famously played in the 2018 grand final win against Collingwood despite having series internal injuries. He helped the Eagles win the game when he intercepted an Adam Treloar kick inside 50 that started the chain of possession that ended in Dom Sheed's matchwinning goal. West Coast football boss Gavin Bell said McGovern was 'exactly the type of player' teammates loved to play with. 'Even to overcome the injury setbacks he has battled in recent years to bounce back and become our club champion for the first time last year showed his commitment to getting the best out of himself,' he said. ''Gov' was exactly the type of player you would love to play with because he was tough and courageous, wanted to win, but also off the field he cared about his mates and looked after others.'

Albany quartets take division two gold and division three silver at Badminton WA's annual country carnival
Albany's shuttlers were division two winners of Badminton WA's annual LiveLighter Country Carnival held at the Kingsway Indoor Stadium in Wanneroo on May 31 and June 1. Calling themselves the Albany Eejits, the quartet of Hermar Rosquillo, Hannah Henderson, Michelle Watson and Jerry Poiron were unbeaten, holding off Mandurah 3 and 4. In division three, the pecking order came down to the final round with Mandurah 5 just edging out Albany No Ideas to take the honours. The Albany side featured Rhett Eiffler, Dalton Henderson, Shannen Higginson and Veronica Panton. The competition featured 85 players from six regional associations with Mandurah taking the division one crown. Eiffler, founder and secretary of the Great Southern Badminton Association, took out the Badminton WA regional volunteer of the year award. GSBA chair Watson said the accolade was well deserved. 'He is someone who puts his heart and soul into badminton,' she said. 'He is dedicated to all aspects of the sport and is also aspiring to become a State umpire. 'Our association would be lost without him.' The next event on the calendar for the GSBA is the annual tournament on August 2-3 at Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre. Organisers are hoping for a bumper turnout of 96 entrants for the event which is backed by Southern Ports and Rio Tinto. A tournament celebrating Albany's bicentenary is also planned for February 2026. It will be the first time the city has hosted a graded event, which is likely to attract the top players in WA.
