Former Olympic cyclist Emma Pooley has spoken about how her relationship with food was coloured by the idea that cyclists should be thin and to her food was not "joyful".Pooley, 42, grew up in Norwich and studied mathematics and engineering at Cambridge University, only coming to cycling in her 20s after a running injury.The triple Olympian and five-time world champion, retired from professional road cycling in 2014.She has released a book telling her story and sharing her favourite recipes, and said: "My point is that enjoyment is a really big part of healthiness."
Looking back on her time as a champion cyclist, Pooley said: "At the elite level, the idea that thinner is faster is wrong... and I think it's quite damaging."I had some problems in the sport but.. I'm fine now and I wasn't that bad. "But I know other athletes have had problems and it affects your health long-term, so it is something I'm concerned about."
She said she addressed those issues in her book and said it was important that the sport "gives a healthy impression on the viewers as well, so that it should inspire people to cycle".Some of her recipes were meals she "learned to make to support my training, but now I eat as part of a healthy lifestyle". However, she said attitudes had "changed for the better and there was a lot of really well-founded science-based thinking in cycling and other sports about a balanced diet and a healthy body"."Some people are naturally very slim and some aren't and you can't force everybody to look the same," Pooley said."No-one forced calorie restriction upon me, it was because I was told it was better to be thin and I looked around me and saw lots of thin people so I inflicted it upon myself, but I realised... the more I ate the faster I went."Now I realise that I was over-restricting and so a lot of people realise it's not about restriction, it's about healthy fuel."My point is that enjoyment is a really big part of... healthiness."

Morgan Birch was puzzled when her four-month-old daughter, Kimie, suddenly fell ill with a fever and first, the Alberta mother assumed it was a common side effect of immunisations - or perhaps a case of chicken pox. Ms Birch then consulted her 78-year-old grandmother, who recognised Kimie's illness immediately."That's measles," her grandmother said. Ms Birch was stunned, as she thought the disease had been eradicated.A lab test later confirmed her grandmother's hypothesis: Kimie had measles, likely contracted after a routine visit to the hospital in the Edmonton area a few weeks is one of more than 3,800 in Canada who have been infected with measles in 2025, most of them children and infants. That figure is nearly three times higher than the number of confirmed US cases, despite Canada's far smaller Canada is the only western country listed among the top 10 with measles outbreaks, according to CDC data, ranking at number eight. "Looking at the Canadian context adds another layer of complexity to this."Measles overall is on the rise in North America, Europe and the UK. Cases in the US reached a 33-year high this year, while England reported nearly 3,000 confirmed infections in 2024, its highest count since 2025 figures have surpassed both. The country has not seen this many measles cases since the illness was declared eliminated in 1998. Before this year, the last peak was in 2011, when about 750 cases were MMR vaccine is the most effective way to fight off measles, a highly contagious and dangerous virus, which can lead to pneumonia, brain swelling and death. A father who suffered with the world's deadliest form of brain cancer has been cleared after he underwent an experimental treatment. Ben Trotman, 43, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma in October 2022, is now showing no signs of the disease after being administered an immunotherapy drug in a world first two years ago. Most patients with the aggressive form of brain cancer typically die within 12-to-18 months. Consultant medical oncologist, Dr Paul Mulholland, who is leading the new trial and treated Mr Trotman, said: 'It is very unusual to have a clear scan with glioblastoma, especially when he didn't have the follow-up surgery that had been planned to remove all of the tumour that was initially visible on scans. 'We hope that the immunotherapy and follow-up treatment Ben has had will hold his tumour at bay – and it has so far, which we are delighted to see.' Mr Trotman married his wife Emily two months after the immunotherapy treatment in 2023, and in April, his daughter Mabel was born. The father-of-one said: 'Getting this diagnosis was the most traumatic experience. We were grappling with the fact that Ben had gone from being apparently perfectly healthy to having months to live. 'Had we not met Dr Mulholland, that would have been it for us. We felt we had a lucky break in an otherwise devastating situation.' Ben Trotman, 43, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma in October 2022, is now showing no signs of the disease after being administered an immunotherapy drug in a world first two years ago Mr Trotman went on to have the current standard treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. He also undergoes quarterly cans, which continue to return clear. 'We obviously don't know what the future holds but having had the immunotherapy treatment and getting these encouraging scan results has given Emily and I a bit of hope,' he said. 'We are focused on rebuilding the life we thought we had lost and enjoying being parents'. The trial, from University College London Hospital's National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, follows a previous one on the same drug which closed because of lack of recruitment. But Dame Siobhain McDonagh MP lead a fundraising campaign to raise more than £1million to cover the costs of the new trials after her sister, Baroness McDonagh, died from glioblastoma in 2023. Dame Siobhain said: 'My beloved sister Margaret was appalled to discover that there had been no advances in brain cancer treatment for decades when she was diagnosed with glioblastoma. 'Changing this was Margaret's final campaign and one that I have continued in her memory. 'I am so grateful to the many people who knew and respected Margaret who have come together and helped to raise funds and campaign for this new trial that we are calling Margaret's Trial.' Dr Paul Mulholland said: 'When I met Margaret she said to me 'what can I do to support you to cure this disease?'. 'I am incredibly grateful to her and to Siobhain whose campaigning and fundraising in her sister's memory has led to this new clinical trial opening for patients with this most aggressive form of brain cancer that has such a poor prognosis, with most patients surviving just nine months after diagnosis. 'The crucial element of this trial is that patients will have their immune system boosted by the drug before they have any other treatment, when they are fit and well enough to tolerate the immunotherapy. 'We're taking everything we have learned from previous trials into this new study and we are already planning follow-on trials. 'My aim is to find a cure for glioblastoma.' The National Brain Appeal is currently funding two posts in support of Dr Mulholland's research. Treatment will take place at the NIHR UCLH's Clinical Research Facility and at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
