Queen Camilla's telling Wimbledon remark that laid Royal Family drama bare

Daily Mirror3 hours ago

Queen Camilla paid a surprise visit to Wimbledon last year amid a tumultuous time for the Royal Family - and during her day out at the tennis she made a telling remark
If there's one sporting tournament that's guaranteed to bring in a royal crowd - it's Wimbledon. The tennis grand slam tournament returns for another year on Monday and regular royal spectators usually include the Princess of Wales, Zara and Mike Tindall - and even Queen Camilla.
Last year, she made an unnannounced visit to the All England Club to watch the quarter finals action from the Royal Box on Centre Court with her sister Annabel Elliot. The outing came during a tumultuous time for Camilla, who during the early part of 2024 had been keeping the royal show on the road while her husband King Charles and Kate took time out from public duties as they were both diagnosed with cancer.

But amid the worrying time, she was able to relax somewhat on a day out at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, where she wore a cream linen dress featuring large giraffe motifs by Anna Valentine, with a Jack Russell brooch from Van Cleef and Arpels.
On arriving at the championships, she met former player Laura Robson, who works in international player relations. And tellingly the Queen told her about her day out that it was it was "so nice to be able to escape for a day".
Meanwhile, Camilla also praised head gardener Martyn Falconer, who has worked at Wimbledon for 25 years and cares for all the plants around the grounds. "It all looks fantastic. It always looks absolutely perfect," she told him.
She also met another Camila – the daughter of Mexican doubles player Santiago Gonzalez – after the youngster boldly introduced herself to the royal guest. The Queen said "fancy having two Camillas here" and asked if she would like a picture together, and had a peek at Camila's Wimbledon pass by holding her lanyard to read it.
She spent time chatting to ball girl Natalia, from Burntwood School in Wandsworth, and ball boy Yug, from Harris Academy Wimbledon, asking them which courts they worked on and how much they had been enjoying the experience.

It has not been confirmed yet if Kate is set to attend SW19 during the Wimbledon fortnight this year as she is still gradually returning to royal duties following her cancer treatment.
Confusion was sparked last week when it was announced that Kate, who is in remission from cancer, would not be attending the second day of Royal Ascot festival.
It came after her name originally appeared on the official list of those taking part in a carriage procession alongside her husband Prince William as well as the King and Queen. When it was confirmed that she would not be attending, sources said she is still trying to find the right balance following her cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy treatment.

Knowing that Charles would be admitting to having an affair, Princess Diana broke royal protocol in a 'revenge dress' with a lasting legacy

On June 29, 1994, Princess Diana attended a dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in London, fully aware that her husband Charles would be admitting to his affair with Camilla that same night on TV. Determined to make a lasting impression, she chose to wear a daring black dress by designer Christina Stambolian - and while it broke a string of royal protocols in the process, it did its job, and photos of the stunning princess filled newspapers around the world.

Jake Paul fight card, undercard, running order and UK fight times

Jake Paul takes on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr tonight as he attempts to move a step closer to a world title shot with victory over the Mexican Jake Paul takes on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr tonight in what could be the social media star's toughest fight to date. Paul insists he has what it takes to become a boxing world champion and beating Chavez Jr would take him a step closer to his goal. The Mexican, who has understandably struggled to follow in his famous father's footsteps, did reign as middleweight world champion but will be taking on Paul at cruiserweight. Paul will go into the fight as the bookmakers' favourite, but Chavez Jr will be confident he has the tools to cause an upset in California. But before tonight's main event, there is plenty of action on what is a packed undercard, and here, we take a look at the fights in depth... Main card Jake Paul vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr - 4.30am Jake Paul claims to be the face of boxing and will have to dispatch Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in style if he is to back up that bold, perhaps ludicrous, claim. Paul has not faced a 'proper' boxer since he took on Tommy Fury more than two years ago and faces a big step up in competition from 58-year-old Mike Tyson whom he outpointed last November. But Chavez Jr has been inactive, fighting just once in the last four years as he laboured to victory over former UFC star Uriah Hall. Gilberto Ramirez vs Yuniel Dorticos - 3.30am Gilberto Ramirez could be the man to hand Jake Paul his dream world title shot if both men win their respective fights tonight. Before Paul takes to the ring to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Ramirez will defend his cruiserweight world title against Yuniel Dorticos, a former champion himself. Ramirez has won three fights in a row since suffering his only career defeat against Dmitry Bivol and will start as the favourite tonight. Floyd Schofield vs Tevin Farmer - 2.30am Floyd Schofield should have taken on Shakur Stevenson earlier this year but pulled out in fight week after falling ill. He will take on veteran Tevin Farmer tonight instead and will be looking to put on a show to ensure he can land another big fight. Schofield puts his unbeaten record on the line against Farmer who has lost his last three fights and who will be desperate to bounce back in style. Avious Griffin vs Julian Rodriguez - 1.45am These two have just one defeat between them in 40 fights, meaning there is plenty on the line tonight. Avious Griffin is yet to taste defeat in his career, winning each of his 17 bouts and stopping all but one of his opponents. Julian Rodriguez has fought just three times since losing to Jose Pedraza in 2021 and will need to win tonight to put some momentum back into his career. Raul Curiel vs Victor Ezequiel Rodriguez - 1am Two undefeated fighters kick off the pay-per-view portion of the fight card with both men winning all but one of their fights - drawing the other. Raul Curiel was held to a draw in his last fight just before Christmas while Victor Ezequiel Rodriguez has won four fights since his only blemish in 2023. Undercard fights Holly Holm vs Yolanda Guadalupe Vega Ochoa Victor Morales vs Rene Alvarado Joel Iriarte vs Kevin Johnson Joshua Edwards vs Dominicc Hardy John Ramirez vs Joahnys Argilagos Alexander Gueche vs Vincent Avina
