Trump says he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, but not everyone agrees
In a world barely able to keep up with the headlines that US President Donald Trump generates with policies that routinely challenge convention, he is revving up on another front that will guarantee global chatter: a bid for a Nobel Peace Prize. Last week, Trump expressed gratitude after a USA Today columnist argued that he was 'the last person the Norwegian Nobel Committee would honour with its Peace Prize. Yet, it should.' 'Thank you USA TODAY. So nice!' he wrote on his Truth Social account. Last month he complained that he wouldn't get the prize 'no matter what I do'. The message appears to be resonating with some world leaders and lawmakers, as nominations for the 'America first' president roll in, aided by the fact that anyone can submit a nomination through a letter to the Nobel Committee in Oslo, Norway. This month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorsed his bid after the government of Pakistan and at least two Republican lawmakers did so in recent weeks. During a meeting with Trump on July 9, Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema said that he believed he 'does deserve a Nobel Peace Prize'. US farm agency fires 70 foreign researchers after national security review
The US Department of Agriculture said it has fired 70 foreign contract researchers after a national security review intended to secure the US food supply from adversaries including China, Russia, North Korea and Iran. Advertisement 'USDA has completed a thorough review of individuals authorised to work on contracts with the department and identified around 70 individuals from countries of concern,' a spokesperson said. 'The individuals working on these contracts from countries of concern will no longer be able to work on USDA projects.' US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on July 8 had announced a farm security plan that included efforts to bar purchases of US farmland by nationals of the four countries, and to terminate any existing research agreements with them. Rollins said the moves were necessary to secure the US food supply. Brazil police search ex-president Bolsonaro's home, political headquarters
Brazil's federal police searched former president Jair Bolsonaro's house and political headquarters on Friday, adding to the legal pressure that US President Donald Trump has tried to end by threatening a steep tariff on Brazilian goods. Bolsonaro's press office reported the searches but gave no further details. Police in a statement said they had issued search warrants ordered by the country's Supreme Court, but did not name Bolsonaro, who governed Latin America's largest country from 2019 to 2022. Lawmakers from Bolsonaro's right-wing Liberal Party said the former president had been ordered to wear an ankle monitor, stop using social media and cease communications with diplomats. They said Bolsonaro was also banned from contacting key allies including his son Eduardo, a Brazilian congressman who has been lobbying in Washington to help his father. On social media, the lawmaker tied the latest court order to a video his father released on Thursday thanking Trump for his support. 02:12 Brazil plans to retaliate against US tariffs that partly aim to free former leader Bolsonaro Brazil plans to retaliate against US tariffs that partly aim to free former leader Bolsonaro
