Gugulethu Tshimanga is pursuing a Master's Degree in Digital Business to bridge her communications expertise with digital transformation, innovation and business strategy.
For Gugulethu Tshimanga, returning to university wasn't about perfect timing — it was about purpose. As the senior regional social media specialist for EMEA at Infobip, a global communications platform, she leads social media strategy across multiple markets. 'I'm a curious thinker, a collaborative leader and someone who genuinely values authenticity and meaningful connection,' she says.
With more than a decade of experience in marketing and communications, Tshimanga has carved out a niche at the intersection of digital strategy, brand storytelling and innovation. In 2020, she completed her honours in Communication Theory at the University of Johannesburg, focusing on new media's transformative role in modern communication.
Now enrolled in the master's in Digital Business at Wits Business School, she is building on her foundation in communications by expanding into innovation and strategic business thinking. 'I wanted to bridge my communications expertise with a solid understanding of digital transformation, innovation and business strategy.'
Creating the moment
'I was ready to stretch beyond my comfort zone and invest in my long-term vision,' Tshimanga says of her decision to return to study. 'There is honestly no right time. Life doesn't pause. But my desire to grow outweighed my fear. That was my signal.'
In a world increasingly shaped by automation, analytics and artificial intelligence, Tshimanga felt a responsibility to stay ahead of the curve. 'It was critical to equip myself with future-facing skills that blend creativity and commerce so that I can continue to lead with insight and drive digital growth in spaces where technology, people and purpose intersect.'
She says the programme has expanded her toolkit and her mindset. Exposure to concepts like agile leadership and customer-centric design has deepened her ability to think strategically and act decisively. 'What's been most impactful is learning to connect strategic thinking with real-world application, which has enhanced my ability to lead teams, advise cross-functional stakeholders and make informed decisions rooted in both creativity and commercial insight.'
A collaborative mindset
Learning hasn't been limited to the classroom. Tshimanga says her fellow students — professionals from a wide range of industries — have played a critical role in her growth. 'Whether it's sharing insights on market trends, exploring joint ventures, or simply having a strong support system of ambitious individuals, the network I am cultivating will continue to grow with me throughout my career.'
That spirit of collaboration has also transformed her leadership approach. She is passionate about building 'learning organisations' that embed innovation and knowledge-sharing into company culture. 'Effective leadership goes beyond directing tasks and involves inspiring teams, fostering collaboration and cultivating a culture of continuous learning and innovation,' she says. 'When people feel their ideas matter, they take ownership. That's when real creativity and collaboration thrive.'
Leading with empathy
She believes active listening and emotional intelligence are essential, especially in dynamic, cross-cultural teams where clear communication makes all the difference. 'Understanding diverse perspectives and motivations helps build trust and empowers individuals to contribute their best.'
But the journey hasn't been without challenges. 'During the first few weeks of my qualification, I struggled with imposter syndrome and doubted my abilities,' she admits. 'I spoke openly about these feelings and practised self-affirmations, and before I knew it, I was thriving.'
Balancing study, work and parenting has required discipline. 'There have been late nights, early mornings and missed family moments,' she says. 'But I've built routines, leaned on my support system, and kept my eyes on the bigger picture.'
A future-ready leader
That bigger picture? A leadership style rooted in authenticity, adaptability and shared success. 'It's been demanding, but also incredibly rewarding.'
Her advice to others considering postgraduate study is clear: 'Approach your studies with a clear purpose and realistic expectations. Think temporary sacrifice for long-term rewards. And remember to stay connected to your support systems — they'll help you carry the weight.'
And for those still on the fence? 'Growth begins the moment you choose courage over comfort.'

Although economists were happy with the decision of the Reserve Bank last week to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points, there is not much for consumers to smile about as they try to prepare for the impending financial disaster. The backlash of a combination of global and local economic factors aligning to hit their pockets very hard in the near-term will make the hardships of previous months look like a walk in the park, Neil Roets, CEO of Debt Rescue, said. The announcement of the repo rate cut, despite inflation edging up to a four-month high, will not ease the pain of millions of hard-working citizens across the country in the months to come, he said. 'Leading economists predicted this move by the Monetary Policy Committee. One of them was the Bank of America, that also believes a formal shift to a 3% inflation target is now almost certain. 'In fact, in its latest South Africa Viewpoint report, it notes that the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) increasingly indicates in explicit communication that this agreement with the National Treasury and key stakeholders is already in place.' ALSO READ: US tariff of 30%: Rand weakest in 3 months, thousands of jobs in danger Last opportunity to cut repo rate before inflation increases due to US tariff Roets says this is likely the last opportunity to ease the financial burden on consumers, with inflation at the lower end of the Sarb's 3% to 6% target range for nine consecutive months. 'With the 30% US tariff hike on South African exports set to start and threatening to have a potentially devastating impact on the country's export market, US president Donald Trump's latest warning of an additional 10% tariff on Brics-aligned nations, where South Africa is a member, escalated uncertainty in the market even further.' He pointed out that this is a direct threat to consumers' financial stability. 'Combined with high inflation, this move by the US could severely impact key sectors such as agriculture, wine, metals, vehicles and manufactured goods, leading to increased costs of fuel, food and other essential goods. 'This is likely to trigger job losses and business closures. Food prices also keep escalating, with food inflation reaching a 15-month high of 5.1% in June, while the country faces ongoing challenges with water infrastructure, leading to potential shortages and rationing. 'It is incomprehensible that consumers are expected to navigate these turbulent waters at a time when households are stretched to their very last rand. 'The only way forward is for South Africans to tighten their belts (if that is even possible) and brace themselves for a very challenging period ahead.' ALSO READ: Ordinary South Africans will feel impact of US tariffs Real disaster coming from US tariffs in blow to SA's economic growth Economist Dawie Roodt has warned that the real disaster resulting from the expected 30% (or more) tariff on South Africa's exports to the US last week will be a severe hit to economic growth. He said that, while the net impact of the US tariff may be relatively small, the real issue is the effect this will have on South Africa's economy. 'At the beginning of the year, everyone was predicting economic growth of around 2%, but every time new statistics are released, this number declines. 'South Africa is almost certainly going to report sub-1% economic growth in 2025, with my current prediction being a paltry 0.8%', he said. Roets warned that the latest volley of economic blows will decimate the lives of millions of citizens, who have been grappling with incessantly rising costs of essential goods and services for far too long. 'People are running out of hope, the only lifeline that has kept them going over the past volatile years. When that well runs dry, we are very likely looking at a country on the brink of social unrest.' The latest Debt Rescue Savings Survey also paints a grim picture of a nation living from month to month, with one of the key insights showing that nearly half (48%) of respondents cannot afford basic necessities such as food, housing and health care, while another 41% say they only just manage. 'Food insecurity is by far the most concerning issue for households, with families now having to choose between keeping the lights on and having three nutritious meals per day,' Roets said. This admission recently came from Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa who admitted that energy poverty is rising, with the rapidly escalating cost of electricity forcing households to choose between food and energy. ALSO READ: Household food basket stable, but price of meat eating into consumers' budgets People cannot afford food While the latest Household Affordability Index, released by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group, shows a small decrease in the price of the monthly food basket, this minute drop is simply not enough to make any discernible difference in the lives of working-class South Africans, he said. The average cost of the July 2025 staple food basket slightly decreased to R5 442.72, a modest dip of 41 cents from June 2025. ''This is a glaring red flag and should be at the top of the priority list of authorities right now. It is crucial for government and private sector leaders in the retail food space to come up with comprehensive strategies to strengthen food security and support economic resilience in the face of these ongoing challenges,' Roets said. While the average monthly cost to feed a child a basic nutritious diet is R957.41, the child support grant of R560 falls 30% short of the food poverty line of R796. Right now, consumers have little-to-no financial cushion to fall back on, Roets added. 'As disposable income drops due to rising inflation and commodity prices, household financial distress is set to worsen and consequently debt levels will Increase.'

These aren't new territories for our maize; we typically export to them in the seasons of abundance such as this one. Last season, we did not see much maize exports to the Far East. Our export activity focused on Africa. The region was hit by the drought and needed maize more than other regions for staple food. South Africa channelled its maize exports, mainly white maize, to this region. And yes, South Africa was also hit by the drought, but we still had a relatively decent yield, and also benefited from supplies of the past season. This enabled South Africa to export more maize to the African continent. Zimbabwe accounted for 56% of South Africa's maize exports of 2.3 million tonnes last year. We are now back in the season of abundance. Zambia has surplus maize, and Zambia, the second largest maize producer in the Southern Africa region, has seen a recovery in its 2024-25 maize production (this season corresponds with the 2025-26 marketing year), now estimated at 3.66 million tonnes, up from 1.50 million tonnes in the previous season, according to Zambia's government data. Zimbabwe's 2024-25 maize production is forecast at 1.30 million tonnes, according to recent data from the Pretoria-based unit of the United States department of agriculture. This is just more than twice the output from the previous season. Still, it is below the 2.00 million tonnes Zimbabwe requires for its domestic annual consumption. Thus, the country may still import later in the year. South Africa and Zambia may be the major maize suppliers to Zimbabwe. In South Africa, our maize production is at 15.03 million tonnes, which is 17% higher than the crop for the 2023-24 season. Importantly, these forecasts are well above South Africa's annual maize needs of about 12 million tonnes, implying that South Africa will have a surplus and remain a net exporter of maize. Indeed, in the week of July 25, South Africa exported 63,897 tonnes of maize. About 79% was exported to Taiwan, and the rest to the Southern African region. This placed South Africa's 2025-26 maize exports at 428,975 tonnes, out of the expected seasonal exports of 2.0 million tonnes. The current marketing year only ends in April 2026. In the 428,975 tonnes of South Africa's maize exports in the first 13 weeks of the 2025-26 marketing year, nearly half is the Far East markets (25% to Vietnam, 12% to Taiwan, and 11% to South Korea). These are South Africa's traditional maize export markets, mainly yellow maize for animal feed. But we didn't export during the years of drought. It is good to see them back buying South Africa's high-quality maize. We will probably see more robust export activity later in the year once farmers have completed the harvest and there is grain in the silos for export. South Africa outlines support measures in response to US tariffs

The government on Monday outlined support measures for local companies that will be hit by a 30% US tariff this week, including exemptions from some competition rules and financial support facilities. It also dismissed speculation that its failure to negotiate a lower tariff was because of its local affirmative action policies, which US President Donald Trump has criticised. South Africa has tried for months to negotiate a deal with Washington, offering to buy US liquefied natural gas and invest $3.3bn (R59.29bn) in US industries in a 'framework deal' proposed to Trump's team. But the effort was unsuccessful, even after Pretoria made a last-minute attempt to improve its offer. Government officials say the US tariff could cause tens of thousands of job losses, especially in the agriculture and car-making industries, as Trump pushes to reshape global trade in favour of the US. Addressing a press conference, trade, industry and competition minister Parks Tau and foreign minister Ronald Lamola said a 'block exemption' from some aspects of the Competition Act was being developed that would allow competitors to collaborate and co-ordinate.
