(From left) TCS Pace global head Leena Walavalkar, High Commissioner of India Shilpak Ambule, TCS Ppresident for growth markets Girish Ramachandran, Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan, TCS chief technology officer Harrick Vin, TCS Singapore country head Punit Agarwal, TCS chief technology officer Michele Lemmens at the launch of the new facility on July 3.
SINGAPORE - Up to 60 local SMEs and start-ups are getting an AI boost from India's largest IT services provider Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) with its launch of a high-powered innovation centre in Singapore.
The new facility, located within TCS Asia Pacific's office at Changi Business Park, will allow the firm's customers and partners – including up to 50 small and medium-sized enterprises and 10 start-ups in the next 12 months – to work with its experts to co-develop, prototype and scale AI solutions for real-world business challenges.
TCS also plans to hire up to 50 fresh graduates from local universities in roles such as data science and cyber security to support the centre's operations. The company has 6,600 employees in Singapore.
TCS declined to disclose the facility's cost or size, but said it plans to expand it in the first half of 2026.
Mr Punit Agarwal , TCS Singapore country head, told The Straits Times on July 3 that SMEs here typically do not have access to top consulting talent for tech, but the new centre will be able to help bridge that gap.
'SMEs may not be as tech-savvy as larger corporations, but our consultants can guide them in understanding their data, learning how to use AI, and assessing their existing tech stack to identify what needs to be modernised,' he said.
Mr Agarwal also noted that the centre will serve as a platform for fintech firms and start-ups to showcase their products and join TCS' Co-Innovation Network – a global ecosystem that connects emerging tech companies with TCS' enterprise customers worldwide.
'The centre will bring together our deep domain and contextual knowledge of customer business and cutting-edge technologies from Google, Nvidia and other technology partners to deliver impactful outcomes for business in Singapore,' he said.
At the launch ceremony for the new innovation centre on July 3 , Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan said Singapore will continue to deploy and develop digital AI solutions with digital and local players.
He noted that TCS's new innovation centre will play a similar role to the $150 million Enterprise Compute Initiative (ECI) announced in the 2025 Budget, which helps Singapore-based companies gain access to cloud resources, AI tools and consultancy services.
'It will partner with local and global corporates to advance their digital transformation – by connecting businesses including start-up s, academia, and government agencies, the centre will drive cross-sector innovation and collaboration,' he said.
Headquartered in Mumbai, TCS established its operations in Singapore in 1985. The firm, which specialises in IT services, consulting and business solutions, has a presence in 55 countries worldwide.

German factory orders slump as US trade talks enter home stretch

German factory orders dropped for the first time in four months as businesses at home were wary of committing to large investments before uncertainty over trade with the US is resolved. Demand fell 1.4 per cent from the previous month in May, the statistics office said July 4. That's worse than all but one estimate in a Bloomberg survey. Orders were still up 5.3 per cent from a year ago. Manufacturers in the continent's largest economy are anxiously awaiting the results of Europe's negotiations with the US. Less than a week before a deadline to seal a deal ends, signals out of Brussels suggest punitive levies may be avoided. The outcome could mean Germany returns to growth – or extends a rotten few years without it. If the talks are successful, the Bundesbank predicts the economy will tread water in 2025 before staging a 'significant' recovery thanks to infrastructure and defense spending. It sees output jumping by 1.2 per cent in 2027. But concern over trade has dented confidence and forced firms including Continental and Merck to cut their outlooks. Others such as ZF Friedrichshafen and Robert Bosch are shedding jobs and closing factories due to muted demand. Investment goods orders from within Germany slumped 12.7 per cent in May from the previous month, with overall domestic factory demand down 7.8 per cent. Orders from abroad rose 2.9 per cent. There are some bright spots. The Economy Ministry said that despite May's setback, the underlying trend in industrial demand are 'on an upward trajectory', even as orders remain volatile amid high trade and geopolitical uncertainties. 'Even if companies' business expectations are now brightening again, a renewed slowdown in industrial demand cannot be ruled out in the further course of the year,' it said in a statement. While a gauge measuring business conditions in manufacturing has indicated contraction for three years, firms are slowly stepping up production, hoping the government will soon kick off its stimulus. Data for industrial production for May are due early next week and could show a contraction too. Numbers from France published July 4 revealed an unexpected decline of 0.5 per cent from a month earlier. Manufacturing output alone fell 1 per cent with even steeper decreases in coking and refining, electronic products, and the automobile and pharmaceutical industries. By contrast, industrial output in Spain expanded in May. BLOOMBERG

China to impose duties of up to 34.9% on EU brandy, starting July 5

SHANGHAI - China's Commerce Ministry issued its final ruling on brandy originating in the European Union on July 4, implementing duties of up to 34.9 per cent for a period of five years starting from July 5, the ministry said in a statement. Some companies that had made minimum price commitments, including Pernod Ricard-owned Martell & Co and Remy Cointreu's Remy Martin, will be spared the higher tariff rate, according to the announcement, unless those commitments were breached. The ruling follows an investigation into European brandy, most of it cognac from France, first launched in 2024. French cognac makers have complained they are collateral damage in a broader trade row between Brussels and Beijing over import tariffs imposed on China-made electric vehicles. China implemented the duties on cognac following an earlier investigation in 2024 into brandy imports, after the European Union accused Beijing of giving its auto industry unfair subsidies and imposed duties on imports of Chinese-made EVs. Monthly cognac exports to China, the world's most valuable market for the spirit, have fallen by as much as 70 per cent due to the trade dispute, according to data from the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac, an industry body. Last week, Reuters reported that French cognac makers had reached a tentative deal on minimum import prices for the Chinese market, but that China would only finalise the deal if progress was made regarding EU tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. Petrol-powered Cupra ready Spanish car brand Cupra will be launching three petrol-powered models in Singapore: the Leon hatchback and two sport utility vehicles (SUVs) – the Formentor and Terramar – on July 31. These are the first non-electric models to be introduced since Volkswagen Group Singapore announced that it was taking over the distributorship of the brand here in 2023. The Leon is the most familiar nameplate among the three, having been available here before Cupra was spun off as an independent brand from Volkswagen-owned Spanish brand Seat in 2018. The latest model is powered by a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine. At 4,451mm long, the facelifted Cupra Formentor VZ is broadly a rival to the BMW X2. It has a 2-litre turbocharged engine rated at 328hp and 440Nm of torque, giving the SUV a 0-100kmh timing of 4.8 seconds. The Formentor is the first model to be developed as a Cupra-only model without a Seat-branded equivalent. It was offered in pre-facelift form between 2021 and 2023 by the brand's previous representative in Singapore. The updated version features the brand's more aggressive design, similar to the flamboyant Tavascan electric vehicle. The Terramar is slightly lower and longer overall than the Volkswagen Tiguan. The version to be offered in Singapore is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with mild-hybrid technology. 'By retaining dedicated physical controls for some of these interactions, automakers can alleviate pain points and simplify the overall customer experience,' he added. Premium vehicles were also found to have more quality issues than mass-market models, especially with the exterior. Among the variety of propulsion solutions, plug-in hybrids were more problematic than pure electric vehicles. The study also found that carmakers are struggling to provide cupholders that are able to accommodate the increasing variety of shapes and sizes of reusable containers that consumers are using. Into its 39th year, the latest study is based on responses from 92,694 car buyers and those who are leasing new model year 2025 cars. Besides surveying them after 90 days of ownership, it also factors in repair visit data based on real-world events reported to new car dealers. No more PayPal at OneMotoring from July 6 From July 6, OneMotoring, a website by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), will no longer accept payment by PayPal for its digital services, such as renewing road tax. Instead, payment can be done using credit cards, Google Pay or Apple Pay. From June 30, a limited access code instead of the last four characters of the owner's identification number will be used for some services, such as getting a vehicle's scrap value. In its memo sent to motor dealers, LTA said the move was to enhance the access security for such services. Ex-Ferrari boss joins McLaren Group Road race: New board director Luca di Montezemolo will be involved with the production car side of the McLaren business. PHOTO: MCLAREN AUTOMOTIVE Former Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo has joined the board of McLaren in a move that the Italian supercar company may not take too kindly to. Reuters reported that the 77-year-old Italian was registered as a director of Abu Dhabi-owned McLaren Group, which controls McLaren Automotive that is based in Woking, Britain, on June 27. Mr Montezemolo joined Ferrari in 1973 as founder Enzo Ferrari's assistant. He became team manager in 1974, a year before the late Austrian triple Formula One (F1) champion Niki Lauda secured his first title. He also headed the race team when racing ace Michael Schumacher won five of his career wins between 2000 and 2004. He stepped down as Ferrari's chairman in 2014. While British company McLaren is a relative newcomer in making road-going sports cars – the first model, the MP4-12C, was launched in 2010 – its rivalry with Italian team Ferrari in F1 goes back decades. Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport called the latest move 'a slap in the face of Ferrari'. In an interview with Italian news agency Ansa, Mr Montezemolo said his heart 'is and always will be red' and his new role was on the automotive side and did not involve F1.
