Door of Hope offers housing and aid for those in need

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Every Tuesday, as part of our Greater Memphis on a Mission series, we highlight organizations making Memphis better. This week, we caught up with a group that believes that housing is a right.
Louis White was just a teenager when his family lost their home.
'Me and my mom got kicked out by our landlord,' said White. 'If we're going to be homeless, I'd rather we just sleep on the streets than to be separated.'
That was over three years ago.
For the last two years, Louis, who is now 20, has had a roof over his head thanks to Door of Hope, a nonprofit organization that provides free housing and support services for individuals who are chronically homeless and have a disability.
'We provide what's called low-barrier housing, which is, we don't background check our program participants, we don't check for criminal records, we don't require any strenuous requirements like weekly drug testing, or you have to comply with treatment for housing. We take our clients as they are,' said Porsha Goodman, Door of Hope executive director.
Once the person is settled into a safe and comfortable place, that's when a case manager can assist with resources.

'If someone's like, 'I want employment,' we have a wonderful case management team who will help them with resume writing and help them, take them on job interviews,' said Goodman. 'If a client has a goal of 'I want to complete my education goal,' we're there to walk them through that process of applying for applications.'
Inside their three different single room occupancy facilities, program participants have their own fully furnished one-bedroom room, private bathroom, and have access to a shared kitchen, laundry room, and two activity rooms.
In addition to housing, White was able to take part in their youth program.
'They help you with, say, you need your birth certificate, your ID, you need to get your benefits back in order,' White said.
Louis is now enrolled in online classes and majoring in business administration.
'I see Door of Hope as hope. They helped me out,' said White.
That is why Brown Missionary Baptist Church and the Mid-South Genesis CDC donated $1,000 to Door of Hope. Because access to stable housing builds a better quality of life.

Why native gardening is on the rise in San Antonio

Native plants are gaining ground in San Antonio. Why it matters: Yards and gardens filled with native species can withstand the city's increasing heat and ongoing drought, conserving water while adding a beautiful touch to neighborhoods. Native plants also help attract pollinators and restore ecosystems, and they're easier to maintain. State of play: When Drake White opened The Nectar Bar in Leon Valley in 2023, it was the city's first nursery solely dedicated to native species. It was followed by Pollinatives, on the Northeast Side, shortly after. Zoom in: White tells Axios that The Nectar Bar began as a landscaping company in 2014. She specialized in pollinator gardens, but soon realized that certain native host plants needed for butterflies to lay eggs weren't available. She started growing those plants herself. Then came the influx of customers that led to the nursery's opening. The big picture: The San Antonio chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas says interest in native landscaping "is rapidly growing," which White has also seen. The San Antonio Water System this year increased the value of its WaterSaver Landscape Coupons, offering $125 per coupon to replace grass with drought-tolerant plants, which includes native ones. What they're saying: Such programs have "helped push the understanding and the drive for native plants," White says. She also thinks people's understanding of native gardens has grown, as they see it can be much more than cacti in a rock garden. How it works: Native gardens don't all look the same. Some neighborhoods are filled with tall wildflowers and a "no-mow" vibe that White calls a prairie look, while others are more manicured. The key is not to overwater. Native plants "kind of take care of themselves," White says. The "no-fail" native species she suggests — which can work even in a pot on an apartment balcony — are:

Easy, high protein breakfast burrito recipe 2 ways to kick start the day

Dan Churchill joined Joe Buck on "GMA" to serve a healthy breakfast. ESPN play-by-play announcer Joe Buck joined "Good Morning America" at the anchor desk on Wednesday, and to help him properly fuel up, chef and cookbook author Dan Churchill accompanied the crew on set to whip up a quick, healthy and high-protein recipe to kickstart the day. Churchill created two options for Buck, the first with ground turkey, black beans and egg whites for extra fiber and less fat; the second, a more traditional version with crispy potatoes with peppers, scrambled eggs and cheese. For people who eat dairy and want a bit of cheese inside, Churchill suggested "do a bit of cottage cheese to make it even lighter and higher in protein." He also said that no matter what fillings you choose, "the ratio of actual contents to the fold" is the most important part of pulling off the perfect breakfast burrito. Buck, who said he regularly cooks breakfast burritos for his two sons, tried his hand at Churchill's simple "pull and tuck then fold it in" method, which improved greatly on the second attempt. Check out his full recipes below. Turkey and Egg White Breakfast Burrito Protein per burrito: About 30-35 grams Makes: 2 Ingredients 4 ounces lean ground turkey or turkey sausage 1/2 cup canned black beans, rinsed 6 egg whites 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional) 2 high-protein tortillas 1/4 cup salsa Hot sauce Spinach (optional) Salt and pepper to taste Red chili flakes, to taste Olive oil Directions Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little bit of olive oil. Once shimmering, add the ground turkey and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and chili flakes. Add black beans until warmed through. In a separate pan, scramble egg whites until just set. Fill a tortilla with scrambled egg whites, turkey and bean mixture, and sprinkle with cheese. Add salsa or hot sauce. Fold in both ends of the tortilla and roll up. Wrap in foil to eat on the go. Egg Scramble and Potato Hash Burrito Protein per burrito: About 20-25 grams Makes: 2 Ingredients 4 large eggs 1 small yellow potato, diced into 1/2-inch cubes (Yukon gold is my preference) 1/4 onion, diced 1/4 bell pepper, diced Olive oil 2 tortillas Optional: 1/4 cup cheddar cheese Directions Wash and dry the potatoes. Cut into half-inch cubes. Saute potatoes in pan over medium heat with a small amount of olive oil until golden and soft. Add onion and pepper, cook until tender. In a bowl, scramble eggs and cook them in a separate pan. Layer hash and eggs into tortillas and add cheese, if desired. Roll into a burrito, serve and enjoy.
