Macron reveals topics he discussed with Putin

The French leader said he raised concerns over Iran, and saw no progress on Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron said his first phone conversation in nearly three years with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin focused mostly on nuclear non-proliferation, following a series of Israeli and US strikes against Iran.
Macron told journalists that the call centered on Iran's nuclear program and the need to preserve the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), according to avideobroadcast by BFMTV on Friday.
"I called him first on the Iranian issue and the necessity of maintaining the non-proliferation treaty," Macron explained. "It was very important to reach an agreement, because France also bears responsibility for ensuring stability."
The French president described the conversation as "important for France," noting that both nations, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, share obligations under the NPT.
Following a series of Israeli and US bombings of its nuclear and other strategic sites, Tehran suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), accusing it of failing to condemn the attacks on facilities under its supervision. Iran also claimed the UN agency colluded with its adversaries, alleging it had passed the identities of nuclear scientists to Israel, several of whom were later assassinated.
According to the Kremlin's readout of the July 1 call, both Putin and Macron emphasized the need to respect Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy while fulfilling its obligations under the non-proliferation treaty. Moscow and Paris also agreed to continue diplomatic engagement to avoid further escalation in the Middle East.
Macron also said he could not report any "progress" on Ukraine in his discussion with Putin, echoing sentiments expressed by US President Donald Trump following his own call with the Russian leader on Thursday.

"We shared our disagreements," Macron said, insisting that "there needs to be a ceasefire first, followed by the resumption of negotiations." He added that Western sanctions, including those already imposed by the EU and new ones proposed by the US Congress, were essential to applying pressure.
The Kremlin confirmed that Putin reiterated Russia's view that the Ukraine conflict stems from years of Western disregard for its security concerns. The Russian president maintained that any settlement must be "comprehensive and long-term," address the "root causes" of the crisis, and take into account what Moscow describes as the "new territorial realities." Russia and Ukraine resumed Türkiye-hosted talks earlier this year after nearly three years without direct diplomatic contact, following Kiev's withdrawal of its demand for an unconditional ceasefire as a precondition for negotiations.
Macron's outreach comes amid a shift in his stance on the conflict. While previously advocating the deployment of French and other NATO troops to Ukraine, the French president has more recently proposed that the EU begin considering a broader dialogue on regional security that includes Russia as part of a potential peace framework.

BRICS nations voice ‘serious concerns' over Trump tariffs

RIO DE JANEIRO: BRICS leaders meeting in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday are expected to decry US President Donald Trump's 'indiscriminate' trade tariffs, saying they are illegal and risk hurting the global economy. Emerging nations, which represent about half the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output, have united over 'serious concerns' about US import tariffs, according to a draft summit statement obtained by AFP on Saturday. Since coming to office in January, Trump has threatened allies and rivals alike with a slew of punitive duties. His latest salvo comes in the form of letters informing trading partners of new tariff rates that will soon enter into force. The draft summit declaration does not mention the United States or its president by name, and could yet be amended by leaders gathering for talks Sunday and Monday. But it is a clear political shot directed at Washington from 11 emerging nations, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. 'We voice serious concerns about the rise of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures which distort trade and are inconsistent with WTO (World Trade Organization) rules,' the draft text says. It warns that such measures 'threaten to further reduce global trade' and are 'affecting the prospects for global economic development.' Xi no show Conceived two decades ago as a forum for fast-growing economies, the BRICS have come to be seen as a Chinese-driven counterbalance to Western power. But the summit's political punch will be depleted by the absence of China's Xi Jinping, who is skipping the annual meeting for the first time in his 12 years as president. That absence has prompted fevered speculation in some quarters. 'The simplest explanation may hold the most explanatory power. Xi recently hosted Lula in Beijing,' said Ryan Hass, a former China director at the US National Security Council who is now with the Brookings Institution think tank. The Chinese leader will not be the only notable absentee. War crime-indicted Russian President Vladimir Putin is also opting to stay away, but will participate via video link, according to the Kremlin. Hass said Putin's non-attendance and the fact that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be a guest of honor in Brazil could also be factors in Xi's absence. 'Xi does not want to appear upstaged by Modi,' who will receive a state lunch, he said. 'I expect Xi's decision to delegate attendance to Premier Li (Qiang) rests amidst these factors.' Still, the Xi no-show is a blow to host President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who wants Brazil to play a bigger role on the world stage. In the year to November 2025, Brazil will have hosted a G20 summit, a BRICS summit, and COP30 international climate talks, all before heading into fiercely contested presidential elections next year, in which he is expected to run. Lula warmly welcomed leaders and dignitaries on Saturday, including China's Premier Li Qiang, as the leftist president hosted a pre-summit business forum in Rio. 'Faced with the resurgence of protectionism, it is up to emerging countries to defend the multilateral trade regime and reform the international financial architecture,' Lula told the event. Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, whose nation is still reeling from a 12-day conflict with Israel, is also skipping the meeting and will be represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. A source familiar with the negotiations said Iran had sought a tougher condemnation of Israel and the United States over their recent bombing of Iranian military, nuclear and other sites. But one diplomatic source said the text would give the 'same message' that BRICS delivered last month. Then Iran's allies expressed 'grave concern' about strikes against Iran, but did not explicitly mention Israel or the United States. Artificial intelligence and health will also be on the agenda at the summit. Original members of the bloc Brazil, Russia, India, and China have been joined by South Africa and, more recently, Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia and Indonesia.

RM4bil investment, RM675mil export potentials secured in Anwar-led mission to France

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has secured RM4 billion in potential investments and RM675 million in prospective exports from a high-level trade and investment mission to France, according to the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti). Led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the mission took place on July 4 and involved engagements with 40 French industry leaders. Several companies expressed interest in investing in Malaysia across key sectors such as high-tech manufacturing, aerospace, renewable energy, tourism, digital economy and sustainable infrastructure. The mission was part of Anwar's eight-day official working visit to Italy, France and Brazil, which ends on July 8. He was accompanied by Miti Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz and officials from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade). Potential exports worth RM675 million were also recorded in high-impact sectors, including aerospace, automotive, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, digital economy, lifestyle and halal products. These sectors align with Malaysia's New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and Green Investment Strategy. Tengku Zafrul said the mission's outcomes reflected foreign investors' confidence in Malaysia's economic direction and business environment. "The overall success of this mission reflects many foreign companies' continued confidence in Malaysia's investor-friendly policies, supply chain ecosystem, competitiveness and economic growth potential," he said in a statement. "The investment and trade potential to be realised will also provide business opportunities for local companies, including Small and Medium Enterprises, and more high-paying jobs for Malaysians. All these are key in driving our Madani economic transformation agenda." Miti said French companies were particularly drawn to Malaysia's stable and dynamic investment climate, skilled workforce, efficient supply chains, and strong global demand for its products. The mission was also supported by several cabinet ministers, including those in charge of foreign affairs, transport, defence, agriculture, legal reform, and energy transition and water transformation.
