Gertie Couple to Open New Restaurant in Longtime Buttermilk Channel Home

After closing their Williamsburg brunch spot, the couple behind Gertie announced over the weekend that they'll be relocating to Prospect Heights. It's one of two storefront takeovers they have up their sleeve, also scooping up the former longtime home of Buttermilk Channel in Carroll Gardens for a new concept. Both are aiming to launch by the end of the year.
First up: Gertie will relocate to 602 Vanderbilt Avenue, reformatted as a to-go spot. For the past 11 years, the address had been R&D Foods, a prepared food staple, which is shutting down on August 9. Owners Ilene Rosen and Sara Dima have passed the keys to Gertie co-owners Nate Adler and Rachel Jackson. Rosen and Dima aren't going far: They will continue with their next-door home goods store, R&D Goods, which shares a backyard with the food spot.
Gertie 2.0 on Vanderbilt will go all in on bagel production. 'We were baking and smoking stuff on premise, trying to be this juggernaut of Russ and Daughters and Katz's in one place,' says Adler. 'Seeing this resurgence of bagels, we are more New York-style than many of the newest additions to the scene.' They're working to add a hood ventilation to the kitchen so they can also fry latkes. And, they'll also carry on customer-favorite R&D Foods items in homage. By night, they'll host occasional pop-ups.
It's a more manageable, downsized layout from Williamsburg, convenient to Gertrude's, their Prospect Heights 'Jew-ish' bistro, which they opened with chef-partner Eli Sussman in 2023. These restaurants, and their newest, the forthcoming Trudie's Tavern, in Carroll Gardens — at 524 Court Street, where Buttermilk Channel stood for almost 20 years — will be a part of RAD, their hospitality group. (The Philadelphia outpost the couple had in the works is no longer.)
Trudie's Tavern will spotlight steak and rotisserie chicken in a kitchen led by Mike Cain, the last chef at Gertie in Williamsburg, who will also oversee the to-go iteration. They'll serve fried chicken-and-waffles, made with a matzo crust, in a nod to the Southern brunch spot once at this Brooklyn address.

Dozens of Licensed Weed Shops Were Placed Too Close to Schools

More than 100 licensed cannabis dispensaries in New York were allowed to open too close to schools and may have to move, state regulators said on Monday. State law prohibits dispensaries from opening within 500 feet of schools. For the past three years, regulators in the Office of Cannabis Management have measured the distance from the entrance of the potential dispensary to the entrance of a school. However, the agency said on Monday that the distance should have been measured to a school's property line. The announcement has created uncertainty around the future of dozens of dispensaries at a time when suitable locations have become increasingly rare and expensive. A vast majority of the affected businesses are in New York City and owned by veterans, people affected by the state's past anti-marijuana laws and others who were given preference to receive licenses. Felicia Reid, the agency's acting executive director, told her staff in an email obtained by The New York Times that the affected businesses include 60 dispensaries that are currently open and 45 others that are getting off the ground, as well as 47 applicants who were required to secure deeds or leases in advance. Officials said the change stemmed from a review of the agency's practices that Ms. Reid ordered last year. In letters to the businesses, Ms. Reid acknowledged that her agency's decision might have harmful repercussions for people who have poured their time, money and energy into jump-starting the legal cannabis industry. 'To give you this news, and for the weight of it, I am incredibly sorry,' she said. In a statement, the agency said it was seeking an unspecified legislative solution to help the dispensaries stay in place. But in online guidance, officials cautioned that if lawmakers did not act, the agency could not renew the dispensaries' licenses at their existing locations. The agency has also set aside $15 million to help cover the expenses of finding a new location for the affected applicants looking to open dispensaries. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Site of Midtown Shooting Is Owned by Rudin Management and Houses N.F.L. and Blackstone

The Midtown Manhattan skyscraper where a gunman killed a police officer and shot additional people on Monday afternoon houses several financial firms and other offices, including those of the investment giant Blackstone and the National Football League. A 44-story tower at 345 Park Avenue, the building is also home to the offices of the accounting and financial advisory firm KPMG, the German investment fund Deutsche Bank, the consulate general of Ireland and the Rudin Management real estate firm. The building occupies an entire block bordered by 51st and 52nd Streets and Lexington Avenue and is one of the handful of buildings in Manhattan to have its own ZIP code. It is owned by Rudin, one of the oldest real estate firms in New York. The firm owns office buildings and residential towers totaling about 15 million square feet of space in New York City. The building is situated in the busy commercial district of Midtown, an area packed with office towers that house major corporations and financial institutions. To its immediate north is the Seagram Building, the 1958 bronze monolith by Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson; to the south is the Sotheby's Institute of Art.

Netflix And Disney Quietly Use $545M-Backed Runway For AI Video — And It's Raising Big Questions In Hollywood

Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) has begun using generative AI video tools from startup Runway AI to accelerate production and reduce visual effects costs in original content, Bloomberg reports. According to Bloomberg, the New York-based startup has raised $545 million in funding and was most recently valued at over $3 billion. Runway's AI Video Tech Draws Netflix, Lionsgate, AMC, and Disney Into Its Orbit Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed that AI is now integrated into its content production workflow, helping to generate special effects more efficiently than traditional methods allow. On an earnings call on July 17, Sarandos cited speed and cost benefits of producing visual effects, including scenes in "El Eternaut," a new Argentinian drama on the platform. While Runway's tools were not used for the 'El Eternaut' scenes, Bloomberg says that sources close to the matter confirmed Netflix is actively experimenting with the startup's software for ongoing projects. The growing interest in Runway's generative video technology isn't limited to Netflix, Bloomberg says. Lionsgate (NYSE:LION) has inked a deal with the company to train an AI model using its library of proprietary content for future film applications. Bloomberg reports that Disney (NYSE:DIS) has tested Runway's AI tools and held exploratory talks with the startup, although it has not committed to full-scale adoption, according to statements from Disney spokespeople. AMC Networks (NASDAQ:AMCX) is also collaborating with Runway AI to visualize upcoming shows and create marketing assets before filming begins, according to Runway AI. According to Bloomberg, traditional motion capture workflows can be costly and time-intensive, while Runway's tools offer near-instant results. The startup first gained traction in 2023 after launching a model capable of turning text prompts into short video clips, spurring widespread interest in the intersection of AI and filmmaking, Bloomberg says. Runway's generative video tools are already being deployed across multiple entertainment formats. According to Bloomberg, the software was used to generate scenes in Amazon's (NASDAQ:AMZN) hit series 'House of David' and to create visuals for Madonna's concert tour and a commercial for also confirmed it struck a deal with Runway to train a proprietary AI model on the studio's intellectual property to reduce production costs and accelerate content development, Bloomberg reports. "The goal is you're making higher quality content for lower prices," Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns said at Runway's AI Film Festival in Santa Monica, California, in June. Generative AI Startups Face Competition, But Runway Leads Hollywood's Adoption Curve Runway is competing with giants like OpenAI and Google in the generative video space, but has more traction than most AI startups in Hollywood's production pipeline. According to Bloomberg, OpenAI's Sora product has yet to secure a formal partnership, despite months of talks with major studios including Disney. Runway's early traction highlights how AI is increasingly reshaping production strategies across the entertainment industry. Read Next: Can you guess how many retire with a $5,000,000 nest egg? .
