Gertie Couple to Open New Restaurant in Longtime Buttermilk Channel Home
is an editor and reporter for the Northeast region at Eater, focusing primarily on New York City, where she was born and raised. She covers restaurants, bars, pop-ups, and the people powering them. After closing their Williamsburg brunch spot, the couple behind Gertie announced over the weekend that they'll be relocating to Prospect Heights. It's one of two storefront takeovers they have up their sleeve, also scooping up the former longtime home of Buttermilk Channel in Carroll Gardens for a new concept. Both are aiming to launch by the end of the year. First up: Gertie will relocate to 602 Vanderbilt Avenue, reformatted as a to-go spot. For the past 11 years, the address had been R&D Foods, a prepared food staple, which is shutting down on August 9. Owners Ilene Rosen and Sara Dima have passed the keys to Gertie co-owners Nate Adler and Rachel Jackson. Rosen and Dima aren't going far: They will continue with their next-door home goods store, R&D Goods, which shares a backyard with the food spot. Gertie 2.0 on Vanderbilt will go all in on bagel production. 'We were baking and smoking stuff on premise, trying to be this juggernaut of Russ and Daughters and Katz's in one place,' says Adler. 'Seeing this resurgence of bagels, we are more New York-style than many of the newest additions to the scene.' They're working to add a hood ventilation to the kitchen so they can also fry latkes. And, they'll also carry on customer-favorite R&D Foods items in homage. By night, they'll host occasional pop-ups. It's a more manageable, downsized layout from Williamsburg, convenient to Gertrude's, their Prospect Heights 'Jew-ish' bistro, which they opened with chef-partner Eli Sussman in 2023. These restaurants, and their newest, the forthcoming Trudie's Tavern, in Carroll Gardens — at 524 Court Street, where Buttermilk Channel stood for almost 20 years — will be a part of RAD, their hospitality group. (The Philadelphia outpost the couple had in the works is no longer.) Trudie's Tavern will spotlight steak and rotisserie chicken in a kitchen led by Mike Cain, the last chef at Gertie in Williamsburg, who will also oversee the to-go iteration. They'll serve fried chicken-and-waffles, made with a matzo crust, in a nod to the Southern brunch spot once at this Brooklyn address.

Mind your language when you get to court
The preservation of minority languages is a good idea in principle, but it makes practical sense to use English – not Gaelic – says Andrew Stevenson Sign up to our daily newsletter – Regular news stories and round-ups from around Scotland direct to your inbox Sign up Thank you for signing up! Born before the First World War in working-class Aberdeen, not merely did she speak with a strong accent, with curious intonation, she deployed so many non-English words, such as 'fit like, loons and quines?' that in essence she used a different language, sometimes known as Doric. Further, she softened her speaking manner for my benefit. With other Doric speakers one would hear a language which could have been Pictish. I was put in mind of Gertie on reading that the Scottish Parliament has passed the Scottish Languages Act 2025. This provides, inter alia, that the languages Gaelic and Scots have an official status in Scotland. Entering into the spirit of this declaration, the Parliament website tells us that the Bill (as it was until June) would, 'alloo Scottish Ministers tae pit oot guidance and set staunards' regarding schools. The Act does not mention the courts as such but it is clearly the kind of enabling legislation which is designed to facilitate other measures, including the use of different languages in public arenas. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Preservation of minority languages is a good idea in principle. We would be culturally poorer if everyone, such as Gertie, could speak only standard English. However, it does make practical sense to retain that language for exclusive use in the Scottish courts. Andrew Stevenson is Secretary, Scottish Law Agents Society Already, there is scope for misunderstanding, even with the use of vernacular English. The Scottish witness who heard a visitor's knock reported the event as 'There was a chap at the door' only to be met by learned counsel with the question 'Who was this chap?' Equally, there is the story that the bottle of 'ginger beer' which famously featured in the official report of Donoghue v Stevenson actually contained 'ginger' (i.e. a generic term for many types of effervescent non-alcoholic beverages) as well as a snail. There is the notion that litigants should be free to use such languages as they wish. Whilst that may be reasonable in an arbitration, as Lord Reed explained in UNISON v Lord Chancellor [2017] UKSC 51, bringing a court claim is not 'a purely private activity' and the outcomes of cases form the basis on which legal advice is provided, all for the benefit of society. Proceedings need to be comprehensible to the public, not merely the participants in it. True, one can use interpreters and translators, as happens in European cases, but this all costs money. The Sheriff Appeal Court rules specifically allow the use of Gaelic there where the sheriff has allowed that language to be used in the first instance proceedings – such as the trial that took place in Stornoway about ten years ago – but that 'an interpreter is to be provided by the Court'. Yet the justice system is already under-resourced. The Government ought to be concentrating its attention on facilitating access to justice through providing a properly funded legal aid scheme rather than paying interpreters. Of course, in civil proceedings these translation costs are borne by the parties. It all seems like an extravagance. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Although the use of Gaelic in courts is potentially culturally divisive here the issue is nowhere close to possessing the sensitivity that prevails across the Irish Sea. The Identity and Language (Northern Ireland) Act 2022 mirrors in some respects our 2024 Act but also repeals the Administration of Justice (Language) Act 1737 which penalised the use in court of languages other than English.

Drama as extra end decides Greenhills second-place play-off
The overall winners of the Tommy McGuinness Perpetual Trophy had already been decided beforehand, with captain Claire Woods and her teammates Tony Whinters and Gabriel Mullen taking the honours. However, the runners-up prizes were up for grabs as two teams had finished tied on the same number of points at the conclusion of the league stage, and spectators gathered on Thursday for a seven-end play-off between John Hurley's team of Michelle Devin Dykstra and Gertie Griffin and Paddy Griffin's team of Josephine Moran and Noel Kennedy. However, with Noel not available on the night Paddy's team incurred two penalty points and Josephine played with four bowls. As it turned out, there was no quarter asked or given in this tough encounter, which was played in a very sporting manner. The pressure was on from the start with both teams leaving bowls short and not getting them up to jack high in the first couple of ends. It was John Hurley's team who settled the better of the two teams, and with Gertie playing a superb backhand draw shot and John unleashing a direct hit into the middle of the head, their team moved two up after three ends. Paddy's team responded very well, applied considerable pressure on their opponents in the next end and were rewarded for playing decent bowls to jack high as they went one ahead. That good fortune continued as Josephine played two delightful forehand draw shots into the head, splitting it wide open, to extend their lead to two in the fifth end, with just two remaining. John's team could see the game slipping away from them, but they gradually regained control. In particular, John and Michelle stepped it up another gear, showing their superb drawing ability as they halved the deficit back to a single shot despite heavy pressure from their opponents. It was proving to be nip and tuck throughout this match and it was no different in the last end as the two teams went at it hammer and tongs, throwing caution to the wind and playing great bowls when it really mattered. Ultimately, John's team of Michelle and Gertie managed to gain control with the help of some superb forehand and backhand draw shots from Gertie and Michelle, levelling the match. With nothing between the teams, the play-off progressed to an extra end, and after winning the toss John's team decided to go first. Gertie duly played a superb forehand draw shot to jack high, but what followed was some superb bowls into a tight head by all the players. With John's team of Michelle and Gertie holding shot, Paddy put weight on his bowls, but it was to no avail as John played a superb shot into the head on the backhand to secure the game by two shots and clinch the runner-up spot in the tournament. Club chairperson John Hurley presented the Tommy McGuinness Perpetual Trophy to the winning captain Claire Woods and her team of Tony Whinters and Gabriel Mullen and congratulating them on winning the trips tournament. Vice-chairman Paddy Smith presented the runners-up prizes to John Hurley's team of Michelle Devin Dykstra and Gertie Griffin. John said in his address that he'd like to thank all the members who took part over the eight weeks, the umpires who officiated in the matches and those who took care of the refreshments throughout the tournament. The next tournament will be over the round robin rinks format and it will commence on July 31. Players are asked to please put their name forward on the noticeboard if they wish to take part. Standout performers on Thursday were John Hurley, Josephine Moran, Michelle Devin Dykstra, Paddy Griffin and Gertie Griffin. Times of play this Thursday are from 7 to 9pm.

A ‘Vital' Williamsburg Diner Is Closing This Summer
A Brooklyn restaurant known for its bright all-day vibes and modern New York Jewish diner and deli dishes is closing this summer. Gertie — that former Eater critic called a 'vital' addition to the NYC neighborhood dining scene — will have its last day in Williamsburg at 357 Grand Street at Marcy Avenue on Sunday, June 15. The Instagram announcement describes the shutter as Gertie's 'season finale, not a series finale.' The restaurant's co-owners founder and restaurateur Nate Adler and Rachel Jackson are looking for a new location for the restaurant, ideally near their other Brooklyn restaurant, Jewish American bistro Gertrude's, in Prospect Heights (which is run with chef and restaurant industry meme-maker Eli Sussman). Eater has reached out for more information. Adler took his cues for Gertie from Los Angeles all-day cafes such as Gjelina, but New York sensibilities, when the restaurant opened in 2019. Its modern Jewish menu includes dishes like chicken schnitzel with challah, bagels, latkes, and more. At the time, former Eater NY critic Ryan Sutton described Gertie as mimicking 'the sunny ethos of Los Angeles while also acting as a neo-nostalgia factory for classic New York specialties.' The restaurant also won Eater New York's Eater Award for best design of that year. Sign up for our newsletter.

I HIGHLY suggest watching some YouTube videos of other people using their perm kits before attempting to use yours. I have big fingers and small eyes so it was difficult for me to get the lift pads in the right positions, but once that was over the rest was a breeze. Unlike some of the other kits I've seen on here, this one has basically everything you need. Watch TikTok makeup expert Mikayla Nogueira review and apply these lashes here. Promising review: "I am 25 years old, and I don't use false lashes mostly because I can't figure out how to wear them without making them look awful. My hands shake a lot and my eyes water a lot so it's difficult for me to wear lashes. I saw a TikTok video about these and decided to give it a shot. Although the smaller pieces were slightly difficult to manage, they stuck to the bond on my lashes with EASE! I love the way these look and now I'm going to test how long they can really last. The box states if you apply double the product, they could last about 10 days. We will see about that! Edit: I've tried a few times now and these last me two to three days. (I also have watery eyes)." — Desi Get it from Amazon for $9.08. 15. Good Molecules Yerba Mate Wake Up Eye Gel with a cult following 'cause of how well it freakin' works. Honestly, I love all the Good Molecules products." — Hayden Smith "Saw this on TikTok and decided to give it a try since the price was amazing. OMG, buy it. I've always had dark circles under my eyes and now fine lines and crow's-feet. While this doesn't completely eliminate my dark circles, the fine lines are really diminished. It wears extremely well under makeup and doesn't feel cakey, or like there's a ton of product on." — Get it from Amazon for $5.98. 16. Plus, the shade of pink is very mature and cute. I am a first time wax user and I didn't even have to read the instructions to understand how to use it :). It even pulled hairs that were less than 1/8 of an inch and managed to pull the follicle, too. I couldn't believe it, lol. It's great quality for the price, and there's no need to splurge on a designer belt if you can't afford it. 10/10 would recommend." — Kelsey Danielle Get it from Amazon for $14.99+ (available in women's sizes XS–XL and in nine colors/styles). 22. I bought four and everyone who comes over loves them. They are also very easy to hold onto.💕" — Susanne Cotoia Get a set of two from Amazon for $29.99 (available in two colors). 24. A SipCaddy wine and beer holder so you can have the most perfect, relaxing bath. It's got a strong suction cup and the plastic is dishwasher safe. What could be more bougie than a bath and bubbly? Promising reviews:"Such a simple idea, how is this just coming into my life now? I didn't think showers could get any better but now I have a brew/wine within reach at all times. Really helps take the edge off after a long day. The thing is way sturdier than you'd expect. I've tugged on it and it's not going anywhere. The slotted design allows you to use stemmed wineglasses, too. A truly perfect product. This piece of plastic is working as hard as my therapist and I stan." — Steven "Bought this for relaxing in the tub. Most excellent! A taco shell holder to take taco Tuesday to the next level because you're waaaay too bougie to just plop 'em on a plate. It's all about impressive presentation, because why not look and feel like you're dining at a 5-star restaurant. Tacos and tequila night anyone? Promising review:"Beautiful little work of art — both sides! What a great little tray. Love this thing. We've used both sides (for two and three tacos) and it's just the perfect amount of space for average-sized tacos. We like it because it's not solid all the way along the bottom of the taco, so the taco shells stay crunchy on both ends. (They don't get soft and break apart as they tend to when they're in contact with a surface the entire time they sit.) The blue one is so pretty I want to hang it on the wall but nobody will let me. So I leave it sitting out!" — KeeKee Get it from Amazon for $7.70+ (available in three colors). You walking around with your $9 sunglasses and $10 press-on nails: E! Entertainment
