Rugby league star joins Wales coaching staff
Former Welsh rugby league star Ben Flower has been appointed to the Wales Women's coaching team for their summer training camp. The 37-year-old - who was also part of the coaching staff for the last Women's Rugby Word Cup in New Zealand - joins Sean Lynn's team as collision coach and will play a key role as the squad prepare for a two-Test match tour to Australia and their 2025 World Cup campaign in England later this summer.
Cardiff-born Flower represented the Welsh-based Crusaders as well as Super League sides Wigan Warriors and Leigh Centurions during a glittering career that saw him win the Challenge Cup, three Super League titles and the World Club challenge with Wigan.
On the international stage, he won 17 caps for the Wales rugby league side. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby.
Having moved into coaching, Flower has taken charge of the South Wales Jets rugby league side as well as working with Wales Women four years ago.
Upon returning to the coaching staff for a busy summer of rugby, he said: "Being involved with Wales is always a privilege and being asked and to have the chance of being involved with my country is an honour you don't turn down.

'Having played at a World Cup as a player and to have this chance to play a role as Wales prepare for a World Cup is an opportunity I am looking forward to.'
Wales are looking to turn around a poor run of form that saw them lose every match at the recent Women's Six Nations, with head coach Lynn hoping that added focus on their collision work will make a big difference during their upcoming World Cup campaign.
Welcoming Flower to his staff, Lynn said: "'Ben is someone who has worked with this squad of players before and the W6N review highlighted the need to improve our collision work and dominance, both sides of the ball, as a real area we can improve on.'
Ospreys powerhouse tipped for Wales call-up
Departing Ospreys star Adam Beard has tipped teammate James Fender to become a Wales international despite missing out on a place on the summer tour to Japan.
The 23-year-old lock has been a consistent performer for the Ospreys, with his no-nonsense style, athleticism and huge physicality seeing him dominate stronger packs, all while getting through a massive amount of work in defence.
He had been on Warren Gatland's radar last season, but injuries prevented him from being called into the Wales squad.
With Beard and Will Rowlands also not selected for the Japan tour by interim coach Matt Sherratt, Fender could count himself as extremely unlucky not to be picked, with many onlookers viewing it as the perfect time for him to be blooded as an international.
Fender has been tipped to win international honours
But while he looks set to have to wait to win his first cap, Beard has no doubt that Fender has the ability to thrive as an international second row, with another teammate, Rhys Davies, also tipped to add to his three Wales caps if he can steer clear of further injuries.
'There are some good second rows in Wales,' Beard told RugbyPass. 'I know from playing at the Ospreys that they have boys pushing through.
"James Ratti is in the squad but they also have Rhys Davies and James Fender. Rhys has had some bad luck with injuries. If he has a run of games, it won't be long before he's wearing the Welsh jersey again.
'James is only 23, but he has all the attributes to be an international second row," he added.
"He's had good exposure over the past couple of years, has taken charge of the set-piece and is learning with every game.'
Borthwick names England squad
By PA Sport Staff
England head coach Steve Borthwick has named a 36-man training squad for next weekend's match against a France XV.
The squad includes nine Bath and Leicester players – Charlie Ewels, Joe Heyes, Ted Hill, Guy Pepper, Will Muir, Max Ojomoh, Ben Spencer, Freddie Steward and Jack van Poortvliet – that featured in Saturday's Gallagher Premiership final, plus Bath's Sam Underhill, who missed the game due to suspension.
However, there is no place for 21-year-old Saracens scrum-half Charlie Bracken, the son of former England international Kyran, one of 16 uncapped players named in the original training group when it was confirmed by England Rugby on Monday.
Sale flanker Ben Curry is included among a list of players in rehabilitation along with Northampton duo Fraser Dingwall and George Furbank and Bristol's Harry Randall.
Players who have been called up to Andy Farrell's British and Irish Lions party for their tour to Australia were not considered for selection, and neither were Joe Batley, Ollie Lawrence, Alex Lozowski, George Martin or Ollie Sleightholme.
An England XV will face a France XV at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham on Saturday ahead of Test matches against the United States and Argentina.

Rescuers race to reach injured German Olympic champion stranded on mountain
Workers and volunteers are racing against time to reach Ms Dahlmeier despite bad weather on the Laila Peak, where she has been stranded since Monday following a mountaineering accident, according to Faizullah Faraq, a spokesman for the regional Gilgit-Baltistan government. Ms Dahlmeier, who also won the 2017 women's biathlon World Cup, was climbing Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range when she was struck by falling rocks. Climbers including two Americans attempting the same ascent are trying to join the rescue operation. Military helicopters were on stand-by but have been unable to deploy due to low visibility and ongoing bad weather and rainfall, Mr Faraq said. Ms Dahlmeier, 31, will be brought to the city of Skardu when she is rescued, Mr Faraq said. Local authorities launched the rescue mission on Monday after receiving a distress signal from Ms Dahlmeier's climbing partner, Marina Eva, who managed to descend to base camp with help from rescuers on Tuesday. Ms Dahlmeier was injured at an altitude of about 18,700ft on Monday at noon local time, according to her management team in Germany. German broadcaster ZDF reported she suffered serious injuries in a rock fall. 'There is still no clarity on her condition,' Alpine Club of Pakistan Vice President Karrar Haidri told The Associated Press. 'She sustained serious injuries, but she has oxygen with her, and injured climbers have been known to survive for days.' Ms Daimler won gold in the sprint and pursuit biathlon events at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Francesco Totti's son forced to quit football aged 19 as heartbreaking reason emerges
Cristian Totti, son of Roma and Italy icon Francesco, has called time on his playing career at 19 after leaving Italian fourth-tier side Olbia at the end of last season for a gut-wrenching reason The son of Roma and Italy legend Francesco Totti has retired from football due to the burden of living up to his legendary father's reputation. Cristian, 19, has ended his playing career after departing fourth-tier club Olbia last season. Having begun at Roma, he was initially expected to mirror his father's illustrious path. The 48-year-old dedicated his entire playing career to the Stadio Olimpico, clocking up 786 matches and cementing his status as a club legend. He also earned 58 international caps for Italy and featured in their triumphant 2006 World Cup campaign under Marcello Lippi, reports the Express. Totti Jr. was photographed with his dad following his final Serie A outing in May 2017. Nevertheless, Cristian never secured a first-team appearance for I Giallorossi and transferred to Spanish outfit Rayo Vallecano before returning to Italy. He would play for Serie D side Avezzano before heading to Olbia last August, where he didn't last long, and had been without a club since. Despite retiring from playing, the teenager will continue within football. He will work alongside his elder brother Riccardo as part of the 'Totti Soccer School', situated in Ostia Lido. Cristian will be tasked with spotting emerging talent and collaborating with the academy's general manager, Claudio D'Ulisse. His previous manager at Olbia, Marco Amelia, had earlier maintained he possessed the capability to succeed professionally. "I wanted him because he was a player with great skills," said Amelia, who was a team-mate of the youngster's father during Italy's 2006 World Cup triumph. "A midfielder capable of creating plays, reading between the defensive lines, creating, but also good at winning the ball back when he wasn't in possession. "In my opinion, he would have had a very good playing career in Serie C and Serie B. Being Totti's son influenced his assessments. There was too much pressure." Totti isn't the first young star to have faced such pressure. Former Manchester United winger Jordi Cruyff's career was plagued by constant comparisons to his father, while ex-Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel emulated his father by winning the Premier League, for example. The 19-year-old's retirement comes eight years after his father emotionally bid farewell to the game and left football behind, stating: "We're here; the moment has arrived. Unfortunately, the moment has arrived that I hoped would never come. "Over the last few days, so much has been said about me, such wonderful things. You were behind me, pushing me on during difficult moments, and that's why I want to say thank you to everyone. "I cried on my own, like crazy! You can't just forget 25 years like this. I thank everyone, even if this is not easy for me. I spoke to my wife about what these years have been like. "I thank my mother and father, my brother, family and friends. Thank you to my wife and three children. I wanted to start from this, because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get to the end of it." Liverpool owners FSG 'in talks over £100m deal' as new target finally identified
Liverpool owners FSG have scoured Europe to purchase a new club as they look to begin a multi-club model and have landed on Spanish club Getafe who are valued at £100m Liverpool owner's FSG are in talks over the £100m takeover of La Liga side Getafe as they look to begin a multi-club model - similar to the set-up the Manchester City owners currently enjoy. The Americans have been in charge at Anfield for well over a decade and, despite some contentious decisions, have made the club a Premier League-winning force again and presided over some stunning redevelopment of their infrastructure. The Athletic claim that talks are underway between FSG and Getafe's president Angel Torres over the takeover of the club. Torres though has denied that publicly and previously stated that he valued the Madrid-based club closer to £160m, but he has now eased on that figure. FSG have undergone feasibility studies of several clubs which included Levante, Elche, Espanyol, Valladolid, Malaga and Bordeaux. But they eventually settled on Getafe and saw a number of green flags following their review. They enjoy a status as an established top flight club whilst their location in Madrid was also a factor in them jumping to the top of the queue. Getafe are also in the midst of a stadium redevelopment, which will modernise and take their Estadio Coliseum to a capacity of 19,000. FSG's desire to land another club was thought to be crucial in Michael Edwards choosing to return to Liverpool in a senior role and he is central in identifying what team to go after. He previously said, after re-joining the Reds as FSG's chief executive of football, that "one of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organisation." Edwards is spearheading the search alongside former Boston Red Sox chief Theo Epstein. Reports earlier this year suggested FSG were pursuing a deal to buy Malaga, but that interest cooled as it emerged that they would need to negotiate a number of legal hurdles. Getafe have been a La Liga club for the past eight seasons and finished 13th last term. The upcoming season will mark Getafe's the 21st season out of the last 22 that the club have been in the Spanish top flight. In that time they have played in the UEFA Cup, now the Europa League. Their owner, Torres, has admitted he will leave the club when the stadium redevelopment is complete in December 2027. In the Premier League several clubs have owners involved in multi-club networks with Manchester United, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest among them.
