Torture of two dalit men: Ganjam police nabs main accused
BERHAMPUR: Five days after two dalit men were assaulted and tortured on cattle smuggling suspicion at Dharakote, Ganjam police arrested the prime accused in the case and produced him in court on Friday.
The accused is 20-year-old Rajesh Samal of Jahada village. Rajesh reportedly led the mob which assaulted and tortured Babula Naik and Bulu Naik of Singipur village on June 22.
IIC of Dharakote police station Chandrika Swain said so far, 12 people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Efforts are underway to nab others involved in the case.
According to the FIR filed by the victims, they were transporting a cow and two calves to their village on a cargo auto-rickshaw when a mob intercepted them at Kharigumma. Accusing them of transporting the cattle illegally, the group demanded Rs 30,000 to release the animals.
The FIR said when the victims refused to comply, the miscreants tied their limbs, thrashed them, partially shaved their heads at a local salon and forced them to crawl for nearly two km to Jahada village. They were also forced to consume grass and drain water at Jahada.

The Director General of Police (DGP), Anurag Dhankar, urged the people to contact the newly inaugurated cyber police station if they encounter any incident related to cybercrime. The cyber police station is located in Agartala's AD Nagar and it will deal with all cyber-related crimes across the state. The Centre has given Rs 45 lakh out of the total outlay of Rs 5 crore. Ashok Gehlot hits out at BJP, NIA over delay in justice for slain Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal's family
Jaipur: Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot has criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central government and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for failing to deliver justice to tailor Kanhaiya Lal Sahu, nearly three years after his brutal murder in Udaipur. Marking the third death anniversary of Kanhaiya Lal, Gehlot paid tribute to the deceased tailor and expressed grief that justice continues to elude the victim's family. "It is a matter of great sadness that even after three years, he and his family have not got justice," the former Chief Minister said in a social media post. Gehlot accused the BJP of politicising the murder case without making any real effort to ensure accountability. "The BJP used this case politically but made no effort for justice, whereas this is a very clear case in which the entire crime and even the confession of the accused is recorded on video," he said. Highlighting the swift action taken under the previous Congress government in Rajasthan, Gehlot said, "During our government, the accused was arrested within just four hours. But that very night, the NIA took over the case. Since then, justice has remained pending." He criticised the NIA and the Central government for procedural delays in the murder case. "Only six out of 166 witnesses have testified in the last three years. No special court or fast-track court was constituted, despite the heinous nature of the crime. Today, this case is being heard under the additional charge of a CBI court," Gehlot said. Taking a jibe at the BJP government in the state, the former Chief Minister alleged that the BJP misled the people with false claims of compensation to the family of the slain tailor Kanhaiya Lal. "They spread confusion with propaganda of Rs 5 to Rs 50 lakh as compensation and used the incident to gather votes," Gehlot said. He also questioned the timing of a new film based on the brutal murder of Kanhaiya Lal up for release. "Everyone knows who stands to benefit politically from this film, but justice has still not been served," he said, adding that if the case had remained with the Rajasthan Police, the accused would likely have been convicted by now. On this day in June 2022, Kanhaiya Lal Sahu was brutally murdered in broad daylight at his tailoring shop in Udaipur, with his throat slit in a gruesome act that shocked the whole country. Three years later, his elder son, Yash Sahu, continues to live by the three solemn vows he took after his father's death, during a protest demanding justice. Yash has neither immersed his father's ashes nor worn shoes or slippers since the murder. He has also not cut his hair for the past three years. "Until the killers of my father are hanged, I will not break these vows," Yash says with quiet determination. The Kanhaiya Lal case is currently being investigated by the NIA.

ED alleges cash scam in management quota admissions at 3 Bengaluru colleges
The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday alleged that admission of students through the management quota in three Bengaluru-based private colleges was being done in an "opaque" manner using money, includiang funds in cash. The federal probe agency's statement comes after they conducted searches at 17 locations on June 25-26 in a "seat blocking scam" case. The raids were carried out at the premises of BMS College of Engineering, Akash Institute of Engineering and Technology, and New Horizon College of Engineering, along with those associated with these institutions, the agency said in a statement. A few entities engaged in educational consultancy services and some private agents were also raided. The ED case stems from a Karnataka Police FIR registered by the KEA (Karnataka Examination Authority) against these colleges. The complaint alleged that these colleges colluded with unknown individuals to acquire the login credentials of students registered with the KEA and subsequently blocked seats in their name for students who did not intend to enroll, the ED said. The searches revealed "evidence" of "widespread" seat blocking and the use of cash/money in the admission process for popular professional courses in the private institutes, it said. "There is an extensive network of agents, educational consultancy service entities, which is used to bring students for admission from across India to these institutes," the statement said. The agency further alleged that the admission for management quota seats was mostly done in an opaque manner based on extraneous considerations such as cash or money. During the searches, a total of Rs 1.37 crore in cash was allegedly seized. However, the ED did not specify the source of the recovered funds. The colleges or their promoters could not be contacted for a comment on the ED charges made against them.
