Tripura needs stronger security due to current situation in Bangladesh: CM
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday exhorted various agencies to enhance security and surveillance in the state, given the current situation in Bangladesh.
Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides. Therefore, strengthening of security is needed, the chief minister said after inaugurating the state's first cyber police station here.
"We all know the present situation in Bangladesh. There is a need to enhance security arrangements. The northeastern state has been made into a corridor for the smuggling of drugs and narcotic items. Infiltration from across the border is also another problem," he said.
"There are reports that a section of people go close to the international border (Indian side) and have conversations with people living on the other side of the international border. The situation may turn ugly once AI-enabled 5G service is available," he said.
Referring to the shift from conventional warfare during 'Operation Sindoor', the chief minister said cannons and the presence of forces were not seen in the conflict (With Pakistan).
"Modern warfare requires a click," he said.
"A mobile phone has become more dangerous than AK-47 rifles. Advanced technology has changed the form of battle, conflict or war," he said.
Terming cybercrime a kind of shadow warfare, he said the security forces need to fight the criminals digitally to prevent fraudulent activities.
Emphasising awareness among the people about cyber fraud activities, Saha said the security agencies are also required to upgrade their skills to foil fraudulent activities on digital platforms.
The Director General of Police (DGP), Anurag Dhankar, urged the people to contact the newly inaugurated cyber police station if they encounter any incident related to cybercrime.
The cyber police station is located in Agartala's AD Nagar and it will deal with all cyber-related crimes across the state.
The Centre has given Rs 45 lakh out of the total outlay of Rs 5 crore.

To fight e-fraud, Goa cops seek details of ‘high value' sr citizens
Panaji: With an increase in cases of senior citizens falling prey to cyber fraudsters, Goa police on Saturday sought details from banks of senior citizens who are high-net-worth individuals, to protect them better. Goa police are taking proactive measures to safeguard the elderly population from cybercrime by engaging directly with them and providing the necessary information and guidance. In a letter to banks, cybercrime SP Rahul Gupta said that in recent months, digital arrest frauds have shown a worrying rise, with fraudsters particularly targeting senior citizens with high net worth. 'Fraudsters posing as law enforcement or govt officials are deceiving victims into transferring large sums of money under the pretext of involvement in fabricated criminal cases,' he said. 'To proactively address this menace and initiate timely preventive awareness efforts, it is requested that your branch kindly share a list of customers who are senior citizens, maintaining bank balances exceeding Rs 10 lakh, along with their name, residential address, age, and contact number. Over the past nine months, 36 senior citizens were defrauded by cybercriminals. Police said that with the increasing digitisation of banking, communication, and day-to-day services, senior citizens have become soft targets for cybercriminals. A complaint in this case was filed by a resident of Valpoi, Sattari. Goa police on Friday busted an interstate gang for allegedly targeting senior citizens under the pretext of helping them at ATMs to withdraw cash. Police said that the gang members, on the pretext of assisting the ATM users to withdraw cash, took their original cards and handed them fake ones. The criminals then used the original cards at different ATMs to withdraw cash.

Jeweller among 4 held in Jankipuram burglary case
Lucknow: Police on Saturday busted a notorious gang that stole nearly Rs 1 crore worth of gold, silver, and cash from the house of a petrol pump owner in Jankipuram earlier this month. Among the four arrested is a jeweller who used to buy stolen ornaments from the gang and melt them for resale. The sensational burglary took place at the locked residence of petrol pump owner Durgesh Kumar Mishra on June 18. Mishra, who had gone with his family to his sister's house in Bengaluru on May 28 and returned on June 18 to find his house ransacked and valuables missing. The intruders not only broke into locked rooms but also stayed for hours—snacking on dry fruits and chips from the kitchen. Following the incident, ADCP North Jitendra Dubey formed a special investigation team comprising local police, the crime branch, and the surveillance cell. CCTV footage, electronic surveillance, and inputs from informers helped trace the gang. Dubey said that those arrested include Rahul Gupta, the gang leader, a resident of Para. Ramu Rawat, a resident of Sector C, Aliganj, Vimlesh Kumar, a resident of Soharamau, Unnao and Rajeev Rastogi, a 60-year-old goldsmith from Para, who bought the stolen jewellery and melted it to create new ornaments.
