Pellston community grieves after tragic drowning claims student, father
According to a Facebook post from Pellston Superintendent Stephen Seelye, a GoFundMe has been set up for funeral expenses for Christopher Houseworth, a junior at Pellston High School, and his father, Dale Houseworth.

"Christopher was a student at Pellston High School — a remarkable young man whose light touched all who knew him. He was a gifted multi-sport athlete, known for his infectious smile and uplifting spirit. His presence brought joy to every room, and his memory will be cherished forever by students, staff and the entire Pellston community. His father, Dale, loved Christopher unconditionally and was his greatest supporter. He was a devoted father who helped shape Christopher into the exceptional young man we all admired," said the posting from Seelye.
Pellston Middle/High School will be offering counseling on Monday and Tuesday this week from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

According to the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Office, a father and son drowned at a state forest campground in Burt Township on July 5. The department said a 54-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, both from Levering, died after the incident at Maple Bay campground on Burt Lake.
Deputies were dispatched after a call reported two individuals in distress in the water. Witnesses at the scene said the 16-year-old boy had been underwater for approximately seven minutes. His father entered the water to attempt to rescue his son.
Cheboygan County Marine Patrol, with assistance from bystanders, arrived on the scene within minutes and located the 54-year-old underwater. Shortly thereafter, the 16-year-old was pulled from the water.
Both victims were transported to the Maple Bay boat launch where emergency life-saving measures were administered. Despite efforts, the 54-year-old was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 16-year-old was transported to McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Petoskey, where he later died.

Police video shows fireworks tent in northern Michigan catch fire, explode
Michigan State Police are investigating what caused a fireworks tent in a northern Michigan parking lot to catch fire and explode. Police responded to a parking lot off Mitchell Street in Haring Township, outside of Cadillac in Wexford County, around 4:12 a.m. on July 5 for a report of a fireworks tent on fire. When troopers arrived in the parking lot, they found the tent on fire, with fireworks going off inside the tent. Crews from the Haring Township and Cadillac fire departments extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported, and no other structures were damaged. The Cadillac Police Department and Wexford County Sheriff's Office assisted troopers. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call MSP's Cadillac Post at 231-779-6040.

A group of people were jumping on top of the white Challenger that was set on fire, and then a group of people started to jump on the bus, and then they started throwing fireworks at the bus, M80s at the bus." Three people were arrested when Detroit police eventually assembled and responded. DPD's Mobile Field Force was put in place last summer after another illegal gathering on the city's east side where 21 people were shot, but their shift ended at 3 a.m. "Because we did not have the large mobile field force on site anymore, we had to pull police cars from multiple precincts. You can't send one scout car into a crowd of 200 people and not put the officers at risk," Mayor Mike Duggan said. "It's becoming clear to the chief and me that these folks are figuring out the mobile field force is going home at 3 o'clock and have adjusted their strategy." Dig deeper Sources say these street takeovers draw crowds from the city and suburbs, and they organize on social media for social media. "You're not going to get any likes in the parking lot, but if they shut down 7 Mile, they will," Erter said. Erter cleaned up liquor bottles off the block. FBI Probes Detroit Pistons' Malik Beasley Over Wire Fraud and Illegal Gambling
Federal authorities are investigating former Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley's alleged involvement in wire fraud, gambling, and illegal prop betting, according to ESPN. The allegations stem from Beasley's time playing for the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2023-2024 season, sources told the outlet, with the focus on 'unusually heavy betting interest on Beasley's statistics' starting in January 2024. A gambling industry source shared that one or more prominent U.S. sportsbooks noticed the activity. 'It's a gambling investigation involving Malik. No criminal charges have been issued. It's nothing but an investigation and Malik is entitled to the presumption of innocence,' Haney said, per the outlet. The investigation has reportedly resulted in the Pistons withdrawing a three-year, $42 million contract offer to Beasley. While on the court, it appeared Beasley was fairing well. The free agent has played for six teams throughout his nine-career in the NBA and has earned nearly $60 million, including his recent one-year, $6 million deal with the Pistons, according to Spotrac. However, behind the scenes, a different story unfolded. The company added that when Beasley allegedly fired the firm, '…(Hazan) made several attempts to collect the full amount of the marketing advance but received little more than drips and drabs of sporadic payments and vague promises to repay the balance over time.' The firm is now seeking a minimum of $2.5 million, alleging that he failed to uphold their contract agreement. Dentist Hassan Alshehabi of Delicate Smiles also won a $34,390 default judgment against Beasley related to a loan. The Detroit News reports Beasley's financial troubles total more than $8 million. 'I have been with Malik for a long time, I have seen a lot of people around him come and go, but I have stayed away from any of his financial management or mismanagement or decisions he would make with money,' Haney told the outlet.
