Swan River radio staff scared after police say station was intentionally set on fire
The owner of a Swan River radio station says staff are feeling scared after police said the fire that destroyed their studio on Thursday morning was intentionally set. At 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, RCMP officers responded to a building fire at the CJ Radio studios on Main Street in the Manitoba town, located about 380 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg. In a news release on Thursday, RCMP said the cause of the fire was incendiary and it led to extensive damage to the inside of the building. Police have launched an arson investigation. Police said CCTV footage from the area shows an unknown male riding a bike past the building before the fire started. Investigators are working to identify a suspect, police said. "The entire place was aflame in less than a second," said CJ Radio's Bill Gade, who runs five radio stations across Manitoba and Saskatchewan from the building. "We're pretty upset. Everything's destroyed, stations are all off, nothing is good, but we are still alive," he said. Gade told CBC News the station began receiving threats on social media about a week ago, when he posted a social media update about a head-on collision that left three dead near Swan River on Canada Day. Gade said he's usually at the building around 5 a.m., but he was running late on Thursday. He said there is "absolutely no way would have gotten out" had he and his co-host been there. "Our staff are scared to go places. They don't know what's next … We just don't know. We're scared," he said. Gade said he is hoping to start feeding some content to his stations later on Friday, but they won't be up and running again for about two weeks as they try to replace the radio equipment that was destroyed by fire. "It took us 19 years to build five radio stations and get them all networked together and have them working perfectly. It's going to take some time to put them back together," he said.

NW Side man charged with murder, arson in Austin fire that killed 4
A Humboldt Park man has been charged with murder in connection to the fatal fire that killed four people — including a 5-year-old boy — in the Austin neighborhood late last month. Lontray Clark, 23, faces multiple felony charges tied to the fatal blaze, including four counts of first-degree murder, four counts of aggravated arson, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of residential arson, Chicago police announced Friday evening. Clark was arrested on Wednesday in Springfield following an investigation by Chicago police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, authorities said. Authorities identified Clark as the offender who allegedly 'intentionally set fire to a residence in the 5200 block of (West) North Avenue' last month, police said. Alongside the 5-year-old, a 27-year-old woman, a 32-year-old woman and a 76-year-old man also died in the blaze, which broke out in the early morning hours of June 26, according to authorities. The 76-year-old was identified as Brad Cummings, longtime editor of the West Side's Voice Newspapers. Several published reports identified the victims as Gina Brown Henry, 32, her son, Jayceon, and her sister, Destiny Henry, 27. The fire left three others critically injured, including a 4-year-old boy. Colleagues and elected officials remembered Cummings as a hallmark of the Austin neighborhood. Len Tomasello, a columnist for the Voice Newspapers for the past three-and-a-half years, said Cummings was the 'best of the West Side.' 'He was a curmudgeon in a good way,' Tomasello said. 'To him, there was only one thing — getting the paper out each week. That's what he lived and breathed for.' Longtime West Side Ald. Emma Mitts, 37th, said that 'everyone knew' Cummings. Mitts recalled that when she'd go to community events, 'I'd look around and the next thing I know, I'd see Brad.' To U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, whose district includes Austin, 'There was no person who lived in the Austin community that was more important to the area than Brad Cummings,' he said. Clark is due to appear in court for a detention hearing on Saturday. tkenny@

McDonald's worker arraigned in fatal stabbing of manager at Detroit-area restaurant
EASTPOINTE, Mich. (AP) — A 26-year-old woman has been arraigned in the fatal stabbing of her manager after being told to leave early from her shift following an argument at a Detroit-area McDonald's restaurant. Afeni Badu Muhammad was arraigned Friday on first-degree premeditated murder and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, the Macomb County prosecutor's office said in a release. After being told to leave the Eastpointe restaurant Thursday morning, a masked Muhammad allegedly returned and entered through the employee entrance, according to the prosecutor's office. Eastpointe is just northeast of Detroit. Jennifer Harris, 39, was stabbed multiple times. A customer at the McDonald's drive-thru window fired a gun in an effort to stop the attack on Harris, followed Muhammad as she fled to a vehicle and held her at gunpoint until police arrived. The customer was legally allowed to carry a concealed weapon. 'This is an absolutely senseless and heartbreaking tragedy,' Prosecutor Peter Lucido said. 'A life was taken in an act of unimaginable violence. The victim leaves behind six children, six young lives that will now grow up without a parent.' Muhammad, of Eastpointe, was being held in the Macomb County Jail on a $25 million bond. A not guilty plea was entered by a judge at Friday's arraignment, according to court records. 'There are a lot of things that need to come to light regarding this matter,' Muhammad's arraignment attorney Matthew Licata told The Associated Press. Muhammad has a probable cause conference on July 23 and a preliminary examination on July 30.
