Chris Brown arrested over 2023 incident in London
Metropolitan Police arrested Chris Brown in Manchester, England, on May 15 for an incident that took place in London on Feb. 19, 2023.
LONDON — Chris Brown was granted bail by a London court after being charged with assault earlier this month.
Brown, a hip-hop singer with a long and complicated legal history, was arrested and charged May 15 with inflicting grievous bodily harm in what prosecutors said was an "unprovoked attack" in a London nightclub in 2023.
The singer, 36, has not yet been asked to enter a plea. He was not present at the U.K. courthouse when Judge Tony Baumgartner granted him bail on May 21.
The bail may prove incredibly important as criminal proceedings could conflict with Brown's upcoming tour. The singer's Breezy Bowl XX World Tour is set to begin June 8 in Amsterdam with support from fellow R&B singer Bryson Tiller.

Police confirmed that the arrest was related to an alleged 2023 assault, as described in a lawsuit previously filed by music producer Amadou "Abe" Diaw.
In October 2023, Diaw sued Brown for allegedly "beating him over the head" with a tequila bottle at a nightclub in London, according to a Los Angeles lawsuit reviewed by USA TODAY.
Early on Feb. 19, 2023, "while traveling for his 2023 'Under the Influence' Tour ... (Brown) brutally assaulted (Diaw) at TAPE nightclub in London. Wielding a large bottle of Don Julio 1942 Tequila as his weapon, Brown inflicted severe and lasting injuries on (Diaw) when beating him over the head with crushing blows," the lawsuit alleged.
"As (Diaw) lay unconscious on the floor, Brown continued to ruthlessly stomp on the defenseless (Diaw) for approximately 30 seconds. (Diaw) ended up in the hospital with lacerations on his head and torn ligaments in his leg."
Chris Brown arrest, charge follows documentary legal drama
Brown's arrest in the U.K. comes months after the singer took legal action following the release of a documentary that explored his alleged history of violence.
In January, the singer-songwriter sued Warner Bros. Discovery and several others for their role in the production of "Chris Brown: A History of Violence," a documentary film chronicling Brown's alleged pattern of abuse. He is seeking $500 million in damages, alleging libel and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Brown's star was heavily tarnished in 2009 when fans learned that he had assaulted then-girlfriend Rihanna on the night of the Grammy Awards. Photos showing Rihanna bloodied and bruised after the attack were leaked to the public at the time, forever altering Brown's reputation and kicking off more than a decade of legal troubles.
In 2017, a restraining order was granted to ex-girlfriend and "Claws" actress Karrueche Tran, mandating that Brown stay away from her after she alleged that he was abusive toward her. Then, the following year, an anonymous accuser represented by women's rights lawyer Gloria Allred sued Brown, alleging he had trapped her in his home and forced her to perform sex acts for his friends.
In 2019, the singer was accused of raping a woman in Paris, but released without charges. This was followed by a July 2024 lawsuit, which alleged Brown and members of his crew severely assaulted four men after a concert in Texas.

Khloé Kardashian names every cosmetic procedure she's done: 'I know some great doctors'

When it comes to sharing her beauty regimen, Khloé Kardashian is taking a page from sister Kylie Jenner's digital book. The reality TV star and media mogul, 41, opened up about her history of cosmetic procedures in the comments section of a June 28 Instagram post. Following her recent appearance at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's Italy wedding, Kardashian received a shout-out from Dr. Jonny Betteridge, a London-based aesthetician, who praised her as the "standout face" from the celebrity nuptials. Betteridge, who said Kardashian's physical appearance has "changed a lot over the past few years" speculated that "The Kardashians" star's "transformation" likely included cosmetic procedures such as a "temporal brow lift," a rhinoplasty (nose job), lip filler, and a face and neck lift. "She looks dramatically different from a few years ago," Betteridge concluded. "And whether you see it as glow up or glam makeover, there's no denying she's created a bold new look for herself." The following day, Kardashian responded to Betteridge's assessment by confirming the cosmetic work she's had done in a detailed list, including the doctors and service providers who oversaw her procedures. "I take this as a great compliment!" she wrote. "In 2025 there are many other things we can do before surgery," Kardashian added. "But when it's time, and if I choose to, I know some great doctors 😉💞" What cosmetic work has Khloé Kardashian done? Chris Brown Champions T-Pain as ‘One of the GOATs' & a ‘Pioneer' in Music Following Drake Spat

Chris Brown has come to T-Pain's defense while hailing his 'Kiss Kiss' collaborator as 'one of the GOATs' of his generation a true 'pioneer' in the music game. C. Breezy took to his Instagram Story over the weekend to champion the Florida rapper-singer's greatness after T-Pain's clash with Drake. BTS Gives ARMY 'Permission to Dance' Again With First-Ever Live Album: Here's When It Arrives 'Random thought,' Brown wrote while giving Pain his flowers. '[T-Pain] is one of the GOATs of my generation! Giving you your flowers!!! Pioneer. Love you, my brother.' While Brown claimed it was a 'random thought,' plenty of fans connected his praise for T-Pain to his name rising to the top of the mainstream conversation after Drake responded by taking a shot at the 'Buy U a Drank' artist. Last week, T-Pain was critical of Drake for seemingly not taking his own advice when it comes to having a 'graceful exit' from the rap game. 'The one thing I learned from Drake, here's the crazy thing, the one thing I learned from but one thing he hasn't followed — his own words,' T-Pain told the Crash Dummies Podcast. 'Drake said, 'I want to be one of those people that gracefully bows out and not get kicked out.'' Drake quickly got wind of T-Pain's viral comments and claimed that Pain 'always had resentment' for him, noting, 'you can hear it every time he speaks on my name.' T-Pain and Brown teamed up for their 2007 smash 'Kiss Kiss,' which topped the Billboard Hot 100, and have had a strong bond in the years since. However, following Brown's defense of T-Pain, some Breezy fans recalled that Tallahassee Pain was critical of the R&B singer in 2022 surrounding the reception to his Breezy album, which saw Pain label Brown with having a 'princess complex.' 'That is my motherf–kin' n—a, but I know what his faults are. Chris Brown has the princess complex,' Pain told Akademiks at the time. 'Now, we gon' take this to something that is controversial, but — it's not controversial. … The princess complex is not only when you get what you want, but you get the accolades of a pretty person for doing absolutely f–king nothing and just being pretty.'Best of Billboard Chart Rewind: In 1989, New Kids on the Block Were 'Hangin' Tough' at No. 1 Janet Jackson's Biggest Billboard Hot 100 Hits H.E.R. & Chris Brown 'Come Through' to No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay Chart

‘Sinners' to become first film streamed in Black American Sign Language

' Sinners,' the box office sensation by Oakland filmmaker Ryan Coogler, is making history once again. The vampire thriller set in the Jim Crow South, starring Michael B. Jordan, is set to become the first film to be shown on a streaming service in Black American Sign Language. The movie will debut on Max on Friday, July 4, in its regular theatrical version and in a version interpreted in BASL. 'Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Our goal at Max is to make these great stories accessible to all audiences in a way that is authentic to the content and the communities we serve,' Naomi Waibel, senior vice president of global product management at Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a statement. ''Sinners' with Black American Sign Language is an example of how culturally nuanced access can enrich the viewing experience for our audiences.' The BASL version marks 'a major step forward in accessibility, representation and visibility in streaming,' Max added in a separate statement. 'For the first time, the Black Deaf community will have streaming access to a more immersive experience in their language.' That 'Sinners,' the highest-grossing film not based on a pre-existing property so far this decade, becomes the first film to be interpreted by BASL is apt given its setting. BASL, used most commonly by deaf Black Americans in the United States, is a product of segregation of schools in the American South in the 19th and early 20th centuries. 'Sinners' is interpreted in BASL Nakia Smith, who Max called 'an influential voice in the Black Deaf community, who delivers a powerful interpretation with cultural depth and linguistic richness that aligns with the film's themes and historical timeline.' Smith has more than 400,000 followers on TikTok, where she posts videos utilizing and discussing BASL. About 50% of deaf Black people use BASL, Carolyn McCaskill, founding director of the Center for Black Deaf Studies at Gallaudet University, a private university in Washington, D.C., for the deaf and hard of hearing, told the New York Times in 2021. BASL users tend to use more two-handed signs, and they often place signs around the forehead, rather than lower on the body. They also tend to use a larger signing space and more facial expressions. Rosa Lee Timm directs Smith's performance of 'Sinners.' Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ' and ' A Minecraft Movie.'
