Muz rape victim, left waiting for hrs in ambulance, dies at PMCH

Patna: An 11-year-old Dalit girl from Muzaffarpur, who was brutally raped and stabbed, died at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday after being kept in a critical condition in an ambulance for more than four hours without admission on Saturday.
The child was assaulted on May 26 and stabbed multiple times in the neck, chest and abdomen. Doctors at SKMCH in Muzaffarpur referred her to PMCH after her condition deteriorated on Saturday. The accused, Rohit Sahni, in his 30s, has been arrested.
Her uncle alleged he was asked to pay Rs 2,000 for an oxygen cylinder when the supply ran low during transit. "Blood was coming out of her nose and mouth on Sunday morning, but no doctor came to see her," he said.
Her vocal cords were severely damaged with her throat partially slit by the accused.
Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan told reporters in Delhi that SKMCH doctors initially recommended she be sent to AIIMS-Patna, but the administration refused, citing a shortage of specialists in ENT and gynaecology. "She died due to the apathy of the hospital administration," she alleged.
State Congress media cell chairman Rajesh Rathorre, who was at PMCH on Saturday with other party leaders, said the girl was left in the ambulance for hours and was only admitted after pressure from Congress workers.
"She didn't receive proper treatment," he said, questioning the govt's claim of developing PMCH into a world-class hospital.
In a viral video, the PMCH deputy superintendent claimed doctors from three departments were involved in her treatment. When told about the four-hour delay, he said emergency doctors had seen her.
Health minister Mangal Pandey was unavailable for comment.
This was the third instance of rape of a minor in Muzaffarpur's Kudhni area since May 26. Another 11-year-old was raped on Saturday, while in Vaishali, a teenager's body was found in a sack with a suspected sexual assault under investigation.
The Congress has launched a phased protest over the issue, burning effigies of CM Nitish Kumar and health minister Pandey in Patna on Sunday evening.

Woman, pregnant with twins, survives 18-hour heart surgery
Mumbai: A 31-year-old woman, eight months pregnant with twins, was rushed to KEM Hospital for intense chest pain radiating down her spine, and breathlessness. Doctors found a tear in the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. But delays in diagnosis and treatment cost nearly a day, and fearing the loss of all three lives, the family moved her to a private hospital. The mother, Tejaswini Hire, and her two preterm daughters remained at Jaslok Hospital for a month. The total expenses touched around Rs 30 lakh, covering an emergency caesarean, an open-heart surgery, and a month-long admission for all three. The twins turned two months old on Sunday. "At KEM, I was told the costs could be Rs 4 lakh, but the risks seemed too high and we had lost trust," said Nishant Hire, the twins' father. The family lives in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Ghatkopar. "We had to borrow from friends and family, all our savings are exhausted, but at least all three are alive and safe," Hire said. Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Hemant Pathare, who performed the surgery, explained that in medical terms this was a case of an aortic dissection caused by a genetic disorder called Marfan syndrome. The syndrome can lead to serious heart problems. "The tear had extended to her coronary artery, and the aortic valve was leaking significantly. This caused severe fluid congestion in her lungs, and she had to be put on ventilator. Eventually, there were more complications impacting almost her entire body," he said. The open-heart surgery lasted 18 hours. By the time Tejaswini reached Jaslok, doctors were unable to detect the heartbeat of one of the babies, prompting an emergency C-section. "Marfan syndrome is risky even outside pregnancy, but during pregnancy, the risk to the mother's life is far more. The most dangerous part is that cardiac complications can strike at any time from the first day to just after delivery," said Dr Danny Laliwala, the gynaecologist who performed the delivery. Hire said Tejaswini is still recovering, while the twins are healthy. "She will have to be on lifelong blood thinners. This is likely the first such survival case in the world, given that maternal mortality in such situations can be as high as 50%, and infant mortality even higher," said Dr Pathare.

Over 4K participate in ‘Run for Nation' marathon held in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: More than 4,000 people, including 150 differently abled individuals, participated in the fifth edition of 'Run for Nation' marathon organized by VGM Hospital in the city on Sunday. While addressing the event, Dr Mohan Prasad, chairman of VGM Hospital, said, "This is a significant day in Coimbatore as the event has brought together 4,000 participants, running for a good cause. Running is a great physical exercise that keeps you healthier and reduces the risks of falling sick." He further added that the marathon was organized with the theme 'Save the Knee', as knee-related issues are becoming widespread, and there is a dire need for creating awareness about it among the public. A total cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh was given to the winners.
