Congress sets up five-member panel to probe alleged rise in crimes against women in BJP-ruled Odisha
The Congress on Thursday (June 19, 2025) named a five-member fact-finding team to visit Odisha and submit a comprehensive report on the alleged rise in crimes against women and the large number of women reported missing in the State. The announcement followed the gang rape of a college girl at Gopalpur in Odisha on Sunday (June 15, 2025). Party general secretary Deepa Dasmunshi will convene the panel, which includes three MPs — Ranjeet Ranjan from Rajya Sabha, and Praniti Shinde and S. Jothimani from Lok Sabha. Former Mahila Congress chief Shobha Oza will also be part of the team. 'In light of the horrific rape incident reported from Gopalpur in Odisha, the increasing cases of atrocities against women, and the disturbing number of women reported missing — numbering in the thousands over the past few years — the Hon'ble Congress president has deputed a fact-finding team to visit Odisha and submit a comprehensive report on the situation,' Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal said in a statement. A case was registered at the Gopalpur police station after the survivor, an undergraduate student of a private college, lodged an FIR on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday night when the woman, who lived in a private mess with three other women, went to the beach with her classmate on the occasion of Raj Parv. According to the complaint, a group of 10 men arrived, held her boyfriend, and took turns raping her. At a press conference at Congress headquarters, Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba said, 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself campaigned in Odisha and won by promising security. But if you look at Odisha's report card over 11 months, 15 rape cases are reported here every day; in 10 months, 4,500 daughters are pleading for justice across the State, and in 11 months, 28,000 women and daughters have become victims of atrocities. Where do criminals get so much courage from?' Along with Odisha Mahila Congress president Meenakshi Bahinipati and Odisha MLA Sofiya Firdous, Ms. Lamba alleged that 'the past year of the BJP government in Odisha has been very dangerous and dreadful for the sisters, daughters, and women of the State.'

Bihar Dalit rape victim dies after being made to wait for hours in ambulance
PATNA: A nine-year-old Dalit girl from Bihar's Muzaffarpur, who was raped and brutally attacked on May 26, died at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday morning, amid allegations that she was left waiting in an ambulance for several hours before getting a bed. She was brought to PMCH from Muzaffarpur-based SKMCH in a critical condition on Saturday. Former Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan said the party would ensure justice for the victim's family. She also lashed out at state health minister Mangal Pandey over the deteriorating condition of premier hospitals like PMCH. 'I demand Mangal Pandey's resignation. He has no moral right to remain in office when the poor are being denied healthcare despite the state government's tall claims of improving infrastructure in government-run hospitals,' she said. Rajesh Rathod, media in-charge of Congress, said that the rape victim had to wait in ambulance for several hours in the premises of the PMCH. "Her family members reached the PMCH at 11 am on Saturday. It took the hospital administration more than four hours to arrange a bed for her,' he added. Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram slammed the state government for its insensitivity towards women, citing the rising incidents of sexual assault. 'The law-and-order machinery has completely collapsed in the state,' he said. Sushil Kumar, senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Muzaffarpur district, said that the accused, identified as Rohit Sahni has already been arrested. Muzaffarpur residents alleged that the accused Rohit Sahani had earlier committed the same offence with another 12-year-old girl at the village and attempted to kill her. However, she had survived in the incident. Meanwhile, the Muzaffarpur unit of the Congress staged a protest at Saraiyaganj Tower Chowk, condemning the incident and threatening to intensify their agitation. Party members alleged that three cases of rape have been reported in the district in recent days.

Muz rape victim, left waiting for hrs in ambulance, dies at PMCH
1 2 Patna: An 11-year-old Dalit girl from Muzaffarpur, who was brutally raped and stabbed, died at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday after being kept in a critical condition in an ambulance for more than four hours without admission on Saturday. The child was assaulted on May 26 and stabbed multiple times in the neck, chest and abdomen. Doctors at SKMCH in Muzaffarpur referred her to PMCH after her condition deteriorated on Saturday. The accused, Rohit Sahni, in his 30s, has been arrested. Her uncle alleged he was asked to pay Rs 2,000 for an oxygen cylinder when the supply ran low during transit. "Blood was coming out of her nose and mouth on Sunday morning, but no doctor came to see her," he said. Her vocal cords were severely damaged with her throat partially slit by the accused. Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan told reporters in Delhi that SKMCH doctors initially recommended she be sent to AIIMS-Patna, but the administration refused, citing a shortage of specialists in ENT and gynaecology. "She died due to the apathy of the hospital administration," she alleged. State Congress media cell chairman Rajesh Rathorre, who was at PMCH on Saturday with other party leaders, said the girl was left in the ambulance for hours and was only admitted after pressure from Congress workers. "She didn't receive proper treatment," he said, questioning the govt's claim of developing PMCH into a world-class hospital. In a viral video, the PMCH deputy superintendent claimed doctors from three departments were involved in her treatment. When told about the four-hour delay, he said emergency doctors had seen her. Health minister Mangal Pandey was unavailable for comment. This was the third instance of rape of a minor in Muzaffarpur's Kudhni area since May 26. Another 11-year-old was raped on Saturday, while in Vaishali, a teenager's body was found in a sack with a suspected sexual assault under investigation. The Congress has launched a phased protest over the issue, burning effigies of CM Nitish Kumar and health minister Pandey in Patna on Sunday evening.
