LETTER: It's not normal to dig in bins for food
Casey Andersohn, Cinderella, writes:
I stopped at a garage shop to buy a sandwich on my way to work the other day. When I left the shop a young guy was digging in a bin outside the door. He greeted me as I walked to my car.
A few thoughts flashed through my mind in a few seconds – how young he was, what it must be like to scavenge in a bin and the fact I just spent R40 on a sandwich while he was digging in a bin for food.
I gave him R10, for which he was very grateful.
On second thoughts, I should have given him my sandwich.
Nonetheless, R10 is not going to render me broke.
I know many beggars are on drugs and are con artists.
Some are downright scary.
Those who beg with children really should be hauled over the coals by the authorities.
Why are there so many children begging on the streets of Boksburg, especially near East Rand Mall? Not an adult in sight.
I've seen them get up in the morning from their sleeping spot next to the mall's perimeter on Bentel Avenue.
This isn't normal. The answer isn't to give them money. But what other answer is there if you want to help one of them?

Residents traumatised as armed hijackings surge across eMalahleni
A disturbing spike in carjacking incidents across eMalahleni has left residents traumatised and authorities on high alert, following four reported cases in less than one week. On June 27, a man was visiting a friend in Klarinet, and on his way back, he agreed to give a lift to two acquaintances at around 02:30. While an route, one of the men allegedly pulled out a firearm and threatened him, before stopping on the roadside. The victim was robbed of his phone and cash, and then abandoned while the suspects drove off with his vehicle. In another incident, a man was returning home on June 26 at 22:20. He was sitting in his silver Nissan Hardbody with a neighbour, when two men opened the car doors and allegedly pointed a firearm at them. They were forcefully pulled out of the car while the engine was still running. The armed man drove away with the vehicle, which had no tracker or insurance. Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson of Witbank Police shared the following tips to avoid carjackings: 'Keep vehicle doors locked and windows closed at all times. Never leave your vehicle unlocked, even if stepping away momentarily. Avoid stopping in remote or poorly populated areas. Park in well-lit and secured locations. If a stranger approaches your vehicle, open the window no more than 5cm to speak.' According to police, on June 25, a man was waiting with a friend outside a residence for his girlfriend. Upon her arrival, they became the victims of a violent carjacking when two unknown men approached their white VW Polo TSI. One of the men approached the driver while allegedly pointing a firearm at him. The driver didn't want to comply and got shot by one of the carjackers. They then forced the other two victims into the back seat. The injured driver managed to escape and seek help at the nearby gate. The armed men sped off with the girlfriend still inside the car. It is not clear what happened to the girlfriend afterward. In what appears to be a premeditated setup, a victim responded to a call on June 21 from a man identifying himself as 'Mike' requesting transport assistance in Old Coronation. Upon arrival, two men, believed to be armed, forced their way into the vehicle and allegedly robbed the driver of an undisclosed amount of money via mobile transfer. They demanded more, coercing him to call his wife and arrange an additional amount of money. The victim was tied with shoelaces, blindfolded, and abandoned in the bush, while the suspects fled in his white Mazda B-series bakkie. Mark Lifman murder: Case postponed until August
The two men accused of the brazen murder of alleged underworld kingpin Mark Lifman made a brief appearance in the George Regional Court today (July 1). Gert Bezuidenhout and Johannes Jacobs stand accused of gunning down Lifman in cold blood in the parking lot of the Garden Route Mall on November 3, last year. According to police reports, Lifman was shot multiple times as he exited the mall and walked toward his blue Ford Ranger bakkie. Emergency services declared him dead on the scene. Bezuidenhout and Jacobs were arrested earlier this year following an intensive investigation led by the Western Cape's anti-gang and organised crime units. The authorities have remained tight-lipped about the possible motive, but sources close to the investigation suggest the murder could be linked to ongoing turf wars between rival criminal factions. Both accused appeared composed in court, flanked by members of the Public Order Police Unit. They have been charged with murder, the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and conspiracy to commit a crime. The matter was postponed to August 25 for a pre-trial conference, where procedural matters such as the readiness of the state and defence, possible plea agreements and the setting of a trial date will be discussed. They will remain in custody until their next court appearance. On June 12, seven months after Lifman was gunned down, his business partner and friend, André Naudé, was also murdered in Parow. Naudé was declared dead on the scene. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
