Global Gateway project takes off at Sargaalaya Arts and Crafts Village in Kozhikode
New infrastructure as well as a drastic change in the landscape is envisaged. The construction of a multi-cuisine restaurant is already under way.
'This project is completely funded by the Union government as per the recommendations of the State government. The project, for which ₹95.34 crore has already been sanctioned, is expected to develop the destination on a global scale. It is also part of the proposed Sargaalaya-Beypore tourism circuit,' said T.K. Rajesh, senior general manager of Sargaalaya.
Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale
The project being implemented at Sargaalaya is one of the two recommended by the State government under the Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale scheme, the other being the Kollam Biodiversity and Recreational Hub on the banks of Ashtamudi Lake which is being developed at ₹59.71 crore.
Besides the restaurant, some of the highlights of the project include a light-and-sound show, an open stage, visitors' pavilion, art gallery, a conference hall, Kalari centre, children's play area, craft workshops, demo spaces, decentralised food court, air-conditioned cafeteria and a whole new landscaping.
The multi-cuisine restaurant, resembling a floating one, is being set up on one side of the rocky pond in the village. The construction on raised pillars will not affect the pond. The light-and-sound show to be set up in the pond is touted to be the biggest in south India. The stage will be positioned amid the pond where live performances will be held. 'The light-and-sound show will be based on the folklore and culture of the Kadathanad region. There will be one or two shows every day after 7 p.m.,' Mr. Rajesh said.
Visitors' pavilion
The art gallery to be set up beside the visitors' pavilion will be available for artists' residencies and exhibitions. There will be craft demonstration spaces along the path towards the main building. Besides the food court, there will be a cafe in the courtyard at the centre of the main building. There will be food demonstrations at the restaurant. The air-conditioned cafeteria will have a seating capacity of 150.
The landscaping will be changed completely with more greenery included.
'Some of these are part of the proposed master plan for Sargaalaya. Besides what is included in the project, we also plan to change the interior of the craft stalls already present,' Mr. Rajesh said.
The project is being undertaken by the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society, which manages Sargaalaya and is expected to be completed by March 2026.

Stage set for opening of 4-lane Ratu road flyover tomorrow
Ranchi: City is gearing up for the inauguration of the 4.18 km, four-lane Ratu Road flyover on Thursday by Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari . The minister will also address a gathering at the OTC ground in Piska More on the same day. Earlier, the flyover was scheduled for inauguration on June 19. As a final touch-up to the construction continued on Tuesday, city residents expressed satisfaction over the timely completion of the project. Once it is opened to the public, the flyover will ensure hassle-free movement along the Kutchery-Ratu Road stretch, providing respite to the commuters from the chronic traffic congestion along the stretch. Ahead of its inauguration, the approach road from the Kutchery Chowk to the elevated corridor was demarcated with traffic cones to streamline the traffic movement on the road. Developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the construction of the flyover began in 2021. After its opening, the elevated corridor will also facilitate hassle-free movement for the people of the nearby districts of Gumla and Daltonganj. Ravi Jha, a commuter, said, "The flyover will make commuting on the stretch easy. It will reduce the travelling time by at least 20 minutes. From Kutchery to Ratu Chowk, it takes more than half an hour at present, which will come down to 10 minutes once the flyover becomes operational." Ranchi MP Sanjay Seth recently directed NHAI officials to ensure that the space under the flyover is developed as a play area, so that it can supplement the lack of playgrounds in the city and help children's physical activities. Cabinet clears ₹1,853 crore Tamil Nadu highway project under HAM
The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved a national highway project in Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs 1,853 crore in Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw announced. The 46.6-kilometre four-lane project between Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram will reduce travel woes between Madurai, Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram, Mandapam, Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi – the travel is dependent on the existing two-lane National Highway 87 (NH-87) and associated state highways, which experience significant congestion due to high traffic volumes, especially in densely populated stretches and key towns along the corridor. 'To address these challenges, the project will upgrade approximately 46.7 km of NH-87 from Paramakudi to Ramanathapuram to a four-lane configuration. This will decongest the existing corridor, improve safety, and cater to the mobility needs of rapidly growing towns such as Paramakudi, Sathirakudi, Achundanvayal and Ramanathapuram,' the Cabinet said in a statement. According to the Cabinet, the Paramakudi–Ramanathapuram section will play a pivotal role in regional economic growth by strengthening connectivity between major religious and economic centres. This will boost tourism to Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi, and open new avenues for trade and industrial development. 'The project will also generate approximately 840,000 person-days of direct and 1 million person-days of indirect employment, and will open new avenues of growth, development and prosperity in surrounding regions,' it said. The corridor has an average daily traffic of 12,700 passenger car units. The civil cost of the project is Rs 997 crore and the land acquisition cost is Rs 340 crore.

Censor board's ban on JSK an attack on creative freedom: Saji Cherian
Minister for Culture Saji Cherian has criticised the Central Board of Film Certifications' (CBFC) decision to deny screening permission for the film JSK-Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring Union Minister and actor Suresh Gopi, calling it a blatant infringement on freedom of expression. Interacting with mediapersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Cherian said, 'If this is the plight of a film featuring a Union Minister, what can common artists expect?' He said the government stands firmly with those in the film industry and creative fields and will extend all necessary support. 'A denial of certification merely based on a film's title is an unjustified overreach and cannot be accepted,' the Minister said. He drew parallels to the earlier censorship issues faced by Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran. Scenes from the film were removed and raids were conducted at the offices of the makers. 'But the people of Kerala wholeheartedly accepted the film,' he said. Mr. Cherian reaffirmed that the Constitution guarantees every citizen the democratic right to enjoy cinema, literature, music, and food choices. 'Any form of encroachment on these rights are unacceptable. We are committed to ensuring a supportive environment for artists to work freely,' he said. He said that the Kerala government will continue to uphold the spirit of artistic liberty and stand as a barrier against censorship and intolerance.
