The sports media world lit up this week after a war of words ignited between two of its biggest voices—Pablo Torre and Bill Simmons. At the center of the controversy? Torre's extensive coverage of former Patriots coach Bill Belichick's relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson—a saga that continues to stir public fascination and criticism alike.

Pablo Torre, host of Pablo Torre Finds Out, has gone all in on the story, offering detailed reports that include allegations of Jordon Hudson being banned from UNC's football facilities, which the university denied, and even securing an Airbnb once used by the couple. 'Dear @BillSimmons: Since you have such a strong public opinion about my work… I happen to have a few questions for you,' Torre tweeted, adding, 'Unless you're afraid of @pablofindsout and someone just 'pretending to be a journalist,' of course.
'
Bill Simmons, founder of The Ringer, took a sharp jab at Torre during a recent episode of his 'Rewatchables' podcast. 'I've never seen anybody dine on a stupider story for a week and a half while pretending you're a journalist. What the f–k was that? Seriously. 'Belichick's dating a girl. Oh, let me do nine shows about it. Settle the f–k down,'' Simmons scoffed. While he later admitted the topic was publicly relevant, he suggested Torre was milking it: 'Maybe do two shows about it.

The irony? The two are reportedly set to appear together on an upcoming podcast—an episode that may bring more sparks than insights.
Torre's reporting hasn't been casual. He has pursued public records, explored legal options for transparency, and unpacked the impact of the Belichick-Hudson drama on UNC's football program, where Belichick currently works in an advisory role. Meanwhile, critics debate whether this is journalism at its boldest or a tabloid-style obsession wrapped in podcast branding.
With the June 1 date—marking Belichick's drop in buyout—from $10 million to $1 million now passed, speculation around his future continues to mount. So does curiosity over what Torre might release next.

Whether fair game or media overreach, the feud between Simmons and Torre has pushed this story beyond sports into the realm of media ethics and professional rivalry.

What Prada did to the GI law and Kolhapuris

The leather sandals seen on the ramp for the Prada Men Spring Summer 2026 collection have recently been in the eye of a storm. While Prada has now acknowledged that the products were inspired by the traditional Kolhapuri chappals (a registered Geographical Indication since 2019) has any law been broken here? PREMIUM Now that the law is done and dusted, the question of ethics and cultural appropriation must be addressed. (REUTERS) To unpack the controversy, one must first understand what a GI registration really means. A geographical indication is a tag given to a product (natural or man made) that originates in a particular place and has a particular set of characteristics. Kolhapuri chappals are identified in the registration as a species of open Indian footwear made of bag tanned leather with vegetable dyes, produced using traditional techniques and tools. According to the registration, these products use buffalo hide, cow hide, calf skins of buff and cow treated with lime (slaked) and tanned using vegetable tanning material (Babulbark and myrobalan nuts), and sisal fibre for stitching. They also involve the use of hand tools for unhairing, fleshing, beaming and scrubbing. The GI law merely serves as a badge of origin and authenticity for a craft or product that comes from a particular region. For example, tea that is not grown in Darjeeling under a specific set of circumstances cannot be called Darjeeling tea. However, if tea grown elsewhere mimics the taste and aroma of a perfect cup of first flush from Darjeeling without using the word on its product packaging or promotion, the law will let you drink your tea (or spill it), without interfering. GI infringement occurs when a product is mis-tagged, i.e. something made elsewhere under a different set of conditions and/or using different raw materials is sold as the original GI tagged product. If Prada sold products tagged as Kolhapuri chappals when they were in fact not made in Maharashtra or Karnataka according to the specifications of the GI registration, only then would the question of infringement arise. That is clearly not the case here. So irrespective of how rankled one may feel, there is no actionable claim that can be made in this instance, for the infringement of a GI or any other form of intellectual property. In this backdrop, should we demand that since these sandals resemble Kolhapuri chappals, Prada should call them by that name? A brand's decision as to where they manufacture their products is a purely commercial one. Prada currently does not manufacture its leather footwear in India. It has its own set of quality control measures and product specifications, that could potentially conflict with the specifications of a GI tagged product. So, a demand that Prada tag their products as Kolhapuri chappals makes sense only if they are manufactured in the specific districts of Maharashtra or Karnataka in accordance with the criteria of the GI registration and are not based on Prada's own specifications and materials. If they don't do either, then it would be a mis-description to tag the products as Kolhapuri chappals and ultimately a disservice to the original craft and its GI registration. I can almost hear you asking, 'then what is the point of the registration?' A GI registration helps set standards for the product; it regulates the place of manufacture, the raw materials and technique used. If the raw materials and techniques are accurate but the place of manufacture is different, it is at best an 'inspiration' — the product cannot be sold under the GI tag, which appears to be the case here. And the question of acknowledging inspiration is a purely ethical and moral question, not a legal one. So does this mean that Prada now 'owns' Kolhapuri chappals? The answer is again, no! Designer apparel and accessories are protected (after registration) under the Designs Act, 2000 in India. For a design to be registrable it needs to be original and not in the public domain. The risk that a luxury brand takes with potentially launching a product that is firmly in the public domain is that it cannot claim infringement against third party knock-offs since the design in this case would not be registrable in Prada's favour. But here again, it is important to remember that the commercial decision of whether these products will traverse the path from ramp to retail has not been publicly declared. So the claim that Prada will be 'selling' these for a lakh plus is at best a click-bait headline for the moment. Now that the law is done and dusted, the question of ethics and cultural appropriation must be addressed. Although there is no actionable legal claim against Prada, the public clamour and PR backlash have resulted in opening up a channel of communication between them and the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce. Whether it will result in tokenism or a commercial boost to the traditional practitioners of the craft, remains to be seen. The one definite positive outcome I see from this controversy is an uptick in the sales of the original Kolhapuri chappals. With a foreign luxury brand's apparent endorsement, we will hopefully see our heritage products as cool! After all, what's sauce for the goose is chutney for the gander! Diogo Jota dies at 28: Jurgen Klopp leads tributes after Liverpool player's death – ‘There must be a bigger purpose, but I can't see it'

The football world was left stunned on Thursday as Liverpool's Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his brother died in a car crash in northwestern Spain early on Thursday. According to a Reuters report, authorities said their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames, and evidence at the scene of the crash near the city of Zamora suggests Jota's car suffered a burst tyre while overtaking, Spanish police said in a statement. The crash occurred around 00:30 a.m. (2230 GMT). Jota, 28, had just married his partner of ten years in late June, with whom he had three children. 'My dream came true,' his wife Rute Cardoso wrote on Instagram of their wedding. Here are some tributes: Jurgen Klopp, former Liverpool manager (Instagram) This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can't see it! I'm heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André. Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much! All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace. Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal captain (Instagram) Doesn't make any sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you were married. To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre We will all miss you. Darwin Nunez, Liverpool striker (Instagram) There are no words of comfort for so much pain. I will always remember you with your smile, as a good companion on and off the field. I send all my strength to his family, from where he is I'm sure he will always be with you, especially his wife and three children. Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender (Sky Sports) 'I can only imagine how his team-mates feel at Liverpool and Portugal, they must be in a world of pain with his friends and family. It just shows us all how quickly life can change. What a summer he's had, and you get this devastating news that his family have had in the last few hours. You can't even comprehend it.' Stephen Warnock, former Liverpool defender (BBC Radio 5 Live) 'You saw the smile on his face when he played. He was always that bubbly character, but he was also a fiery person on the pitch. He had that lovely balance. He was always happy to give up his time, more than gracious when he spoke to people, very respectful but also a very charismatic character. I don't think you become a fans' favourite without being that type of person.' Portugal Prime Minister Luis Montenegro (AP) 'The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honoured Portugal's name, and his brother is unexpected and tragic. I extend my deepest condolences to their family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sports.' Didier Drogba, former Chelsea striker (Instagram) Can't believe it!!!! What a player what a driving force he was!! All my love and affection to his family. Neco Williams, former Liverpool player (X) One of the really good people out there. Rest in peace Diogo and André Silva condolences to their families at this time. David de Gea, Spanish goalkeeper (X) Sometimes life is too cruel. Bruno Guimaraes, Newcastle player (X) Life is truly fleeting! Hard to believe news like this. I wish much strength to the family and friends. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. Mourning
