Fiscal deficit in Q1 at 17.9 pc of full-year target: CGA data
Last Updated:
New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) The Centre's fiscal deficit stood at 17.9 per cent of the full-year target at the end of June, according to data released by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) on Thursday.
It was at 8.4 per cent of Budget Estimates (BE) of 2024-25 in the first three months of the previous financial year.
In absolute terms, the fiscal deficit, or gap between the government's expenditure and revenue, was Rs 2,80,732 crore in the April-June period of the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The Centre estimates the fiscal deficit during 2025-26 at 4.4 per cent of the GDP, or Rs 15.69 lakh crore.
The Government of India has received Rs 9.41 lakh crore (26.9 per cent of corresponding BE 2025-26 of the total receipts) up to June, 2025.
This includes Rs 5.4 lakh crore net tax revenue, Rs 3.73 lakh crore of non-tax revenue and Rs 28,018 crore of non-debt capital receipts.
CGA data showed Rs 3,26,941 crore has been transferred to state governments as devolution of share of taxes by the government, which is Rs 47,439 crore higher than the previous year.
Total expenditure incurred by the Centre was Rs 12.22 lakh crore, or 24.1 per cent of corresponding BE 2025-26.
Of the total expenditure, Rs 9.47 lakh crore was on revenue account and Rs 2.75 lakh crore on capital account.
Of the total revenue expenditure, Rs 3.86 lakh crore was on account of interest payments and Rs 83,554 crore was on account of major subsidies.
Commenting on the CGA data, Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist of ICRA said tepid direct tax collections in June 2025 pulled down the performance of gross tax revenues in the month, although this was driven by an adverse base, even as devolution to states maintained a robust pace.
Although the Centre's capital expenditure expanded a sharp 52 per cent year-on-year in Q1, FY26, this was on a low base and was 1 per cent lower than the levels seen in Q1, FY24.
The healthy year-on-year growth in capex number in Q1 FY26, is also likely to have supported investment demand, auguring well for the GDP growth print for the quarter, Nayar added. PTI NKD TRB

China's Ant Group to fully exit Paytm by selling 5.84% stake
China's Ant Group is all set to exit One 97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm, as it plans to sell its remaining 5.84% equity stake in the fintech firm through block deals on Tuesday. Sources said that the total value of the deal is pegged at Rs 3,800 crore. The floor price for the block deal has been fixed at Rs 1,020 per share, a 5.4% discount to Paytm's last closing price of Rs 1,078.20 on Monday on the NSE. The stake sale is likely to be executed as a clean-out trade, indicating a full exit of Antfin's specified stake in a single tranche. At the end of the June quarter, Antfin (Netherlands) Holding B.V. held a 5.84% stake, or 3.77 crore shares in the company, according to exchange data. Antfin has been reducing its stake in Paytm in recent quarters. This is the third significant stake sale by the Ant Group in One 97 Communications and is expected to lead to the full exit of the Chinese investor from the company. In May 2025 and August 2023, the Alibaba-owned company sold about a 14.3% stake of Paytm for about Rs 8,830 crore.

CM Rekha Gupta forms committees for new excise, EV policies in Delhi
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday announced the constitution of two separate committees for the formulation of the excise policy and EV Policy 2.0. The excise policy committee will be headed by PWD Minister Parvesh Verma, while the electric vehicle policy committee will be headed by Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, she said. In a post on X, the chief minister said, 'Keeping social security in focus, the Delhi government has constituted a high-level committee to formulate a transparent excise policy, which will be headed by Cabinet Minister Shri @p_sahibsingh. 'Additionally, a special committee has been formed under the leadership of Cabinet Minister Shri @ashishsood_bjp to develop an effective and public-oriented EV (Electric Vehicle) policy for Delhi. Our government is committed to the holistic development of Delhi and is continuously taking decisions in the public interest. #ViksitDelhi," she said. 'Our government is dedicated to the people of Delhi and is continuously taking decisions in public interest," Gupta had said earlier. Both the excise policy and EV policy have been extended multiple times in the absence of new policies. In June this year, the government extended its excise policy for the financial year 2025–26. The current policy was extended with effect from July 1 to March 31, 2026. The extended policy, also known as the old excise policy, came into operation in September 2022 after the then Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government scrapped its reformative policy (2021–22) that ran into rough weather amid allegations of irregularities in its formulation and implementation. The Delhi government had extended the current Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy until March 31, 2026, as the draft of the new policy will undergo public consultation, which is expected to take time, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh had said last month. The current EV policy, which was first introduced in 2020 during the previous Aam Aadmi Party rule, lapsed in August 2023. The policy has been extended several times since then.
