Electricity tariff restructuring offers greater cost transparency
In a statement today, FMM said the new structure reflects a 19 per cent overall reduction in tariff rates, taking into account current fuel prices.
'FMM would also like to thank the government for the RM5 billion allocated to absorb the fuel cost adjustment during the first half of the year due to the delay in the RP4 implementation,' it said.
FMM said 70 per cent of medium voltage users are expected to see lower bills, while the remaining 30 per cent may face higher costs and should improve load management and energy efficiency.
'In particular, FMM greatly welcomes the increase in the off-peak hours by 80 per cent from 70 hours to 128 hours per week, including the off-peak rates for weekends which FMM has been advocating for the past decades,' it said.
FMM noted that the new automated fuel adjustment mechanism, which replaces the imbalance cost pass-through system, would provide a more robust and effective way to reflect energy prices in line with market conditions.
FMM also called for a review of the tariff structure for the high-voltage time-of-use category to ensure that the tariff remains competitive and attractive in the long term for the high-voltage users.
The federation said that it also looks forward to further announcements on renewable energy (RE) schemes, including the green electricity tariff, following the restructuring exercise, to support greater adoption of RE in the industrial sector.

IPOH: The Perak government aims to encourage about 10 per cent of public and private sector workers to form trade unions in the state within the next three years as part of efforts to empower workers' rights and safeguard their welfare. State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said Perak is the first state to provide a special allocation of RM5,000 to help workers set up their unions. 'In Perak, out of 1.25 million workers, only a small number have joined unions. The membership rate in this state is lower than the national average of eight per cent. 'Unions are established in workplaces to ensure industrial harmony. If there is a union, workers can negotiate for salary adjustments every two years, as well as for health benefits and leave-related matters,' he told a press conference here today. He said union formation should now be easier following the 2023 amendments to the Trade Unions Act 1959, but many employers remain fearful and are reluctant to allow their workers to form unions. To facilitate union formation, Sivanesan said the state Trade Union Affairs Department has been instructed to represent the state government and assist the workers. 'When a pro-tem committee is formed but has yet to be registered with the Trade Union Affairs Department, it requires funding to carry out its activities, as it is not permitted to collect money. That's why the Perak state government will provide the funds. 'The funds will be used to help workers establish unions. I hope this will benefit at least 1.1 million workers who are currently not union members or have no union at their workplaces,' he said. Data Centre Investment Surges To RM144.4 Bln By March 2025 -- MITI
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- From 2021 to March 31, 2025, Malaysia recorded 25 approved investment projects in the data centre sector, with a total investment value of RM144.4 billion. According to records from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), MITI said these projects were approved under the Digital Ecosystem Acceleration Scheme (DESAC) and are expected to create high-skilled, high-income jobs. 'These investments are projected to generate 1,429 new jobs, with roles requiring specialised expertise such as engineers, data scientists, big data analysts, cybersecurity engineers, and information technology (IT) engineers. 'Over 50 per cent of these roles will be high-income jobs, offering salaries of more than RM5,000,' MITI said in a written reply published on Parliament's website today. The ministry was responding to a question from Aminolhuda Hassan (PH–Sri Gading), who asked MITI to detail job opportunities arising from the expanding data centre sector and the potential economic and labour market impacts. On that front, the ministry said it will carry out a survey to assess the economic spillover effects of the data centre industry. 'MITI has identified several key parameters for data collection across four main segments in the data centre ecosystem. 'These include data centre companies and operators; major tech firms and content providers; telecommunications and mobile network operators; and equipment suppliers and service providers within the data centre industry,' it said. In addition, MITI noted that several leading global tech companies have committed to creating around 67,000 direct and indirect jobs, mainly in the IT sector and related supply chains, once their projects are fully implemented.
