LG asks Delhi govt to make Aadhaar registrations 'foolproof', warns of national security concerns
VK Saxena
has asked the
Delhi government
to make
Aadhaar
registrations in the national capital "foolproof", saying illegal migrants obtaining the document has wider national security ramifications, officials said on Friday.
It has come to the attention of the Lt Governor that in several instances, illegal immigrants have managed to secure an
Aadhaar card
on the basis of "false documentation or misrepresentation", Ashish Kundra, principal secretary to LG, said in a letter to the Delhi chief secretary.
This has a "cascading" effect as some individuals secure other documents (passport and voter identity cards) which establish nationality and avail benefits under various government schemes and impact
employment opportunities
meant for locals, noted the letter.
"This also has wider ramifications for national security," the letter from the
LG office
said.
A fresh look at the responsibilities assigned to Registrars under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, in the Delhi government, is required with respect to field-level implementation, monitoring and verification procedures, the letter said.
Live Events
"The Lt Governor has directed that clear instructions be issued to all Registrars to strictly comply with the provisions of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016 and switch to an in-house model of Aadhaar enrolment within two months," it said.
Divisional commissioner should also supervise a monthly audit exercise to make sure there are no loopholes, it added further.
Details of all the enrolment centres set up by the state government including municipal bodies, may be put up alongwith the current mode of functioning by July 15, the LG directed further.
Aadhaar Enrolment is an "extremely sensitive exercise" and it's vital to fix the responsibility of the person gathering data before issuing Aadhaar, so that accountability can be fixed in case of lapses, the letter noted.

BJP ally TDP writes to EC—Special Intensive Revision shouldn't be confused with citizenship verification
'Andhra Pradesh registered a record voter turnout of 81.86 per cent, surpassing its 2019 figure of 80.38 per cent. Notably, 117 out of 175 assembly constituencies recorded a turnout above 80 per cent,' the MP asserted in the letter. He emphasised that this turnout stood nearly 15 percentage points above the national average of 65.79 per cent, underlining the state's consistent commitment to democratic participation. The letter, addressed to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, was written on behalf of the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party. The TDP Lok Sabha floor leader, Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, highlighted Andhra Pradesh's strong democratic tradition and active voter participation, particularly during the recent general elections. Amaravati: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) submitted a detailed representation to the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday, proposing a series of reforms to improve electoral roll management and enhance transparency in the electoral process. 'The Telugu Desam Party has consistently championed the voice of the people through electoral engagement,' the MP said in the letter, stressing the need for reforms that match the high level of civic responsibility demonstrated by the electorate in Andhra Pradesh. The major recommendations include AI-driven de-duplication, Aadhaar-based EPIC number verification, improved public dashboards for tracking voter grievances, and yearly third-party audits under the CAG. Additionally, the TDP demanded that election officials be held to higher standards, that Block Level Officers (BLOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) be rotated, and that special enrolment campaigns be held for migrant and marginalised groups. The party emphasised the need for procedural clarity, protections against erroneous removals, and adherence to previous voter inclusion in reference to the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The party urged that the SIR in Andhra Pradesh be started as soon as possible, emphasising that the exercise should not be confused with citizenship verification. The letter said, 'As Andhra Pradesh is not due for assembly elections until 2029, the Telugu Desam Party recognised that any future Special Intensive Revision (SIR) provides a valuable opportunity to ensure that the electoral rolls are updated in a fair, inclusive, and transparent manner.' Debate over ‘infiltration in CG': Dy CM refutes BJP MLA's claims
Raipur: The Chhattisgarh govt is intensifying its efforts against illegal infiltration, particularly of Bangladeshi nationals, who are reportedly settling across the state. This was said by deputy chief minister & home minister Vijay Sharma during a calling attention motion of the Assembly, responding to concerns raised by BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar. Chandrakar highlighted the growing number of infiltrators, particularly in urban centres like Raipur, Bilaspur, and Durg, and in tribal-dominated areas, raising fears of 'demographic change and increased crime'. He also questioned how these individuals were acquiring official documents such as Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, and ration cards, suggesting possible complicity from govt officials. Responding to the allegations, deputy chief minister Sharma refuted claims of govt connivance, stating that the police administration is taking prompt legal action against illegally residing foreign nationals. Sharma provided figures for recent arrests: Durg: Four cases registered, 11 arrests made. Raipur district: Three cases registered, six arrests made. Bilaspur district: One case registered, one arrest made. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cách giao dịch ETH/USD mà không cần nắm giữ Ether IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo He added that special task forces were formed in districts. Chandrakar pressed the deputy CM on the efficacy of existing measures, questioning how infiltrators managed to obtain legal documents and cross state borders undetected. He sought details on the detention and deportation process for those arrested. Sharma explained that the cases registered fall under the Foreigners Act, with most accused currently in jail or out on bail under strict surveillance. He said that the state is moving towards establishing 'holding centres' with a capacity of 100 individuals in Raipur, to house those awaiting deportation. Sharma assured the assembly that though lengthy, the process of deportation would certainly move forward under the current govt. Sharma confirmed that all individuals apprehended so far are Bangladeshi nationals, with no Rohingya infiltrators among them. He highlighted an instance in Raipur where a Bangladeshi national obtained an Aadhaar card, EPIC card, and ration card with the help of a local councillor, leading to action against four officials. He reiterated that stringent action would be taken against anyone found aiding those who threaten the state's demography and vitiate its systems. He also alluded to political parties obstructing voter list revision, suggesting it might be an attempt to protect vote banks, an act he vowed would not be tolerated.

Farmers demand fair compensation for land acquired for power transmission lines
Members of the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers' Association have demanded fair compensation for farmers who have lost their agricultural lands to the 66/11 kV and 220 kV power transmission lines passing through their fields under the Hunsur sub-division from the Gejjeyanavaddaragudi power station. The farmers, who took part in a protest, condemned the authorities for fixing compensation without providing proper information or holding consultations with landowners. They alleged that the officials prepared 'false reports' and fixed compensation without their consent. 'A minimum compensation of ₹6 lakh a gunta should be fixed,' the farmers demanded, pointing out that land prices in layout areas (in Kadakola and Vajamangala areas where power transmission lines also pass through their fields) range between ₹6 lakh and ₹10 lakh a gunta, while the authorities are offering ₹50,000 to ₹60,000, which they described as inadequate. They urged the district administration to withdraw the mandatory Aadhaar registration and meter installation for agricultural pumpset users, continue the Akrama-Sakrama (regularisation) scheme for pumpsets, and provide free electricity connections to farmers whose lands are affected by the high-tension I-Power lines. They also demanded electricity connections to houses constructed within orchards and agricultural fields for the benefit of students and elderly residents. Additional Deputy Commissioner Shivraj received the memorandum from farmers in the absence of Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy. The association's State prganising secretary Attahalli Devaraj, district general secretary Baradanapura Nagaraj, district vice-president Marballi Neelakanthappa, and nearly 100 farmers took part in the protest.
