Bayern's Jamal Musiala fractured his leg in collision with Gianluigi Donnarumma at Club World Cup
MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich says attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala faces a 'lengthy' recovery from a leg fracture after his collision with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Club World Cup. Bayern said Sunday that Musiala had flown back from Florida to Munich that morning for surgery on the injury he picked up in Saturday's loss to PSG in the quarterfinals. Bayern said doctors found Musiala 'sustained a fracture of the fibula (bone in the lower leg) associated with an ankle dislocation.' 'This serious injury and the lengthy lay-off are a real shock for Jamal and us all,' Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said in a statement. 'Jamal has just come back from an injury and will now be out for another long period. He'll get everything he needs from us. We'll support him intensively, be by his side and already look forward to when he's back on the pitch.' Wimbledon: Ben Shelton pleaded for extra time off for his sister at Morgan Stanley. It worked
LONDON (AP) — Ben Shelton launched a public plea for his sister to get some extra time off from her job at investment bank Morgan Stanley so she could remain at Wimbledon to cheer for him. It worked. After advancing to face Italy's Lorenzo Sonego on Monday in the fourth round, Shelton spoke in an on-court interview in front of a crowd that included his sister, Emma, and his girlfriend, U.S. national soccer team star Trinity Rodman. 'I've been playing well this week. It's not just been me here. I have a great team. My parents are here. My grildfriend's here. Also, my sister's here. She's been here for every match that I've played this tournament so far. She's been the lucky charm,' said the 10th-seeded Shelton, a 22-year-old American who has appeared in two Grand Slam semifinals. 'But she has work back in the U.S., starting on Monday. She works for Morgan Stanley.' That drew some boos from spectators as Emma covered her face with her hands. 'If any of you all have some (connections) and get her a couple extra days off so she can (stay and) we can keep this rolling,' Shelton continued after his 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over Marton Fucsovics of Hungary on Saturday, 'that'd be great.' Sure enough, hours later, Emma posted a short video on Instagram in which Ben is heard asking her, 'You got the week off or what?' She jumps up and down with her arms raised and a wide smile, and Ben says, 'Shoutout, Morgan Stanley.' The caption reads 'thank you MS' with three blue heart emojis and 'return flight: cancelled.' Ben Shelton, who won all nine sets he played in Week 1 at the All England Club, beat Sonego in the Australian Open quarterfinals in January. Shohei Ohtani works 2 scoreless innings and strikes out side in 2nd on 31st birthday
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani worked two scoreless innings against the Houston Astros on Saturday in his fourth mound start of the season, striking out the side in order in the second while pitching on his 31st birthday. Ohtani allowed one hit and threw 31 pitches, 21 for strikes. He fanned Christian Walker, Victor Caratini and Yanier Diaz — all swinging — to conclude his latest outing as an opener as he works his way back from elbow surgery. In his previous start a week earlier, Ohtani threw the fastest pitch of his career at 101.7 mph. This time, he hit triple digits only once — a 100.9 mph fastball that Caratini fouled off. Dodgers organist Dieter Ruehle played one line of 'Happy Birthday' as Ohtani walked to the dugout after the second inning. Before the game, the Los Angeles grounds crew wrote the message 'HB Sho' in the dirt. Isaac Paredes led off against Ohtani with a single to left. Ohtani then got Cam Smith to hit a comebacker that second baseman Tommy Edman turned into a double play. Jose Altuve followed with a groundout as Ohtani retired the side on 10 pitches. Ohtani has allowed one run in six innings this season for a 1.50 ERA. The three-time MVP did not pitch last season, his first with the Dodgers, while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He made 86 mound starts over five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, going 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA. Batting in his customary leadoff spot, Ohtani grounded out in the first inning and again in the second.
