Contractor expects to complete Zuari bridge tower project in 2028

Time of India5 days ago
Panaji:
Contractor Dilip Buildcon said it will complete the construction of two towers atop the new Zuari bridge by 2028. The foundation stone for the project of the two Rs 270-crore towers was laid last month.
The ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) granted the contractor five years to complete the project.
Dilip Buildcon vice-president (constructions) Atul Joshi said that as per the finalised design, each of the two towers will have three floors on top. He said that each tower will be 125m in height and each will have four high-speed elevators to take visitors to its top.
'We have began mobilising the machinery for the construction of the towers.
Meanwhile, the environmental impact assessment study is on. We expect to begin construction work after the 2025 monsoon. Though we have five years to complete the project, we are targeting 2028 for its completion. Of the three storeys on each tower, one floor, the middle one, will be semi-open, as per the design,' said Joshi.
He said that it will be decided at a later stage what activities can be offered on the three floors of the towers.
'There are a number of possibilities like a restaurant, viewing deck and observatory. But the plans will keep evolving over three years on how best to utilise the space. The capacity will depend on the type of activity offered, but on average, each tower will be able to have 500 visitors at a time,' said Joshi.
The Zuari bridge observatory project is being built on the DBFOT or Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer model.
As per this model, the contractor will fund the entire project and recover the cost by charging visitors to the tower a fee. The concessionaire will operate the towers for a 50-year period.
The contractor wants to complete the project as soon as possible, as it will make the towers operational and begin recovering the investment. The tower has been planned as a tourist attraction. The design also includes a 7.5m-wide walkway bridge on both marine sides for pedestrian access, along with parking facilities at both ends to accommodate visitors.
A walkway will take tourists from the parking to the base of the towers. The contractor has also been provided additional land at Verna to set up other commercial activities to recover the cost of the project initially, while it takes some time for the footfall to the towers to pick up.

HC to bank: SC ruled Aadhaar not must to open a/c, pay 50k for delay

Mumbai: Bombay high court has directed Yes Bank Ltd to pay Rs 50,000 in compensation to a private company for delay in opening its bank account after Supreme Court's Sept 2018 judgment that Aadhaar is not a mandatory requirement for opening bank accounts. "The bank account was ultimately opened in Jan 2019. Therefore, for a period of three to four months, the petitioner was unable to rent out the premises," said a bench of Justices Mahesh Sonak and Jitendra Jain on June 26. Microfibers Pvt Ltd could not rent out its premises in Nariman Point without a bank account. In Jan 2018, it applied to the bank to open an account. In April 2018, the bank replied that providing an Aadhaar card was mandatory for opening an account. The petitioner pointed out that Supreme Court's interim orders suggested that insisting on an Aadhaar card was not legal or proper. Since the bank did not yield, the petition was filed in HC. On June 26, the petitioner's advocate, Niyam Bhasin, confirmed that the account was opened in Jan 2019. He said in Nov 2018, HC admitted the petition for a final hearing on the prayer for Rs 10 lakh in damages. The judges noted that the bank "had not bothered to file its reply". Bhasin said for a year, from Jan 2018-Jan 2019, the premises could not be rented out. The founder-director died and is survived by his 84-year-old wife and his daughter. Bhasin said rent in the area in 2018 was in the range of Rs 1.5 lakh per month. The bench noted that in April 2018, when the bank insisted on an Aadhaar card, Supreme Court's interim orders were in operation. However, in Sept 2018, the apex court struck down the requirement of an Aadhaar card for opening bank accounts. "Therefore, from Sept 26, 2018, onwards, there was no impediment to the respondent-bank opening the account without insisting on an Aadhaar card," it added. It, however, said the claim for Rs 10 lakh compensation is "exaggerated and cannot be granted". Without relegating the petitioner to an alternative remedy and taking into consideration the circumstances cumulatively, the judges directed the bank to pay Rs 50,000 within eight weeks. Between April 1 and June 30, as many as 1,92,324 taxpayers collectively paid Rs88.85 crore in property tax. Of the total, 96,993 property owners used online platforms like the NMC website, the My Nagpur mobile app, and the WhatsApp chatbot, paying a total of Rs 49.92 crore. The remaining 95,331 taxpayers paid Rs35.97 crore at zonal offices and special camps. The trend signals both improved compliance and a rising preference for digital modes of payment. NMC commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari rolled out the rebate scheme to encourage early payments. The scheme, backed by an aggressive outreach strategy, was instrumental in improving the tax collection. In the light of early trends and collection patterns, Chaudhari has revised the revenue target to Rs400 crore from Rs350 crore set earlier. Compared to Rs73.13 crore collected in the same quarter last year, this year's tally marks a 20% increase — affirming the success of NMC's digital push and incentive-led model. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Post the first quarter, the civic body is offering rebates of 10% for online and 5% for offline property tax payments made till Dec 31, 2025. Govt relief package: 110 Surat schools submit 3,200 forms for fee assistance

At least 110 schools in Surat submitted over 3,200 application forms for fee assistance — as a part of the state government relief package for diamond polishers' children — benefiting 10,921 students to the Surat District Industries Centre on Monday, sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. The forms will be verified by the Surat Diamond Association before being forwarded to the approval committee headed by District Collector Dr Sourabh Pardhi. Earlier in May, the state government announced a special assistance package for the diamond industry. Under the relief package, the state government will cover the school fees of children of diamond polishers, providing an annual sum of Rs 13,500 for one year. The criteria to avail the scheme benefits include the diamond polisher being unemployed for the last year and having worked in the industry for at least three years. The government will directly pay the fees to the schools. The diamond industry has been experiencing a prolonged period of recession for over two-and-a-half years now. The diamond polishers, along with middle and small diamond unit owners, have been facing great financial difficulty due to the reduced demand for polished diamonds in the international market. There are over 4,000 small, medium, and large diamond factories in Surat city, employing a workforce of over 5 lakh diamond workers. Out of the 10 polished diamonds found in the world, eight are cut and polished in Surat city. The majority of the workforce in the diamond industry hails from Saurashtra and other parts of Gujarat and are settled in Surat city. Following the announcement of a special relief package by the state government, schools were instructed to make students and their parents aware of the scheme. The school authorities had also distributed forms among the students, seeking all necessary details. The form submission is being done in three phases, with the first phase ending on Monday, while the second and third phases are scheduled for July 7 and 23, according to sources in the Surat district administration. On Monday, 110 schools submitted 3,200 forms to the district industries commissioner. Majority of such schools are located in Katargam, Kapodara, Sarthana, and Varachha areas in Surat city. Surat District Industries Commissioner Jigar Dave told The Indian Express, 'We have received 3,200 application forms from 110 schools, and the number of beneficiaries is over 10,921 students'. 'We will be sending these forms to the Surat Diamond Association for verification, including confirmation of whether the applicant is actually a diamond polisher and if they have been jobless for the last year. There are two more phases left for accepting such forms. Once these forms are verified, it will be sent to the scrutiny committee, and later it will reach the approval committee headed by Surat District Collector Dr Sourabh Pardhi'. Surat Diamond Association President Jagdish Khunt told The Indian Express, 'We are expecting more such forms in the coming days. A core committee meeting regarding the disbursement of the special assistance package will be held on Thursday'. 'We already have a staff crunch. How are we supposed to handle 3,200 forms? We will share our concerns with the committee head, the Surat District Collector. We are also preparing for our upcoming loose diamond auction event which will be held in Surat city from July 11 to 13. How will we take care of so much work?' Khunt asked.
