Contractor expects to complete Zuari bridge tower project in 2028
Panaji: Contractor Dilip Buildcon said it will complete the construction of two towers atop the new Zuari bridge by 2028. The foundation stone for the project of the two Rs 270-crore towers was laid last month. The ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) granted the contractor five years to complete the project. Dilip Buildcon vice-president (constructions) Atul Joshi said that as per the finalised design, each of the two towers will have three floors on top. He said that each tower will be 125m in height and each will have four high-speed elevators to take visitors to its top. 'We have began mobilising the machinery for the construction of the towers. Meanwhile, the environmental impact assessment study is on. We expect to begin construction work after the 2025 monsoon. Though we have five years to complete the project, we are targeting 2028 for its completion. Of the three storeys on each tower, one floor, the middle one, will be semi-open, as per the design,' said Joshi. He said that it will be decided at a later stage what activities can be offered on the three floors of the towers. 'There are a number of possibilities like a restaurant, viewing deck and observatory. But the plans will keep evolving over three years on how best to utilise the space. The capacity will depend on the type of activity offered, but on average, each tower will be able to have 500 visitors at a time,' said Joshi. The Zuari bridge observatory project is being built on the DBFOT or Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer model. As per this model, the contractor will fund the entire project and recover the cost by charging visitors to the tower a fee. The concessionaire will operate the towers for a 50-year period. The contractor wants to complete the project as soon as possible, as it will make the towers operational and begin recovering the investment. The tower has been planned as a tourist attraction. The design also includes a 7.5m-wide walkway bridge on both marine sides for pedestrian access, along with parking facilities at both ends to accommodate visitors. A walkway will take tourists from the parking to the base of the towers. The contractor has also been provided additional land at Verna to set up other commercial activities to recover the cost of the project initially, while it takes some time for the footfall to the towers to pick up.

UP seeks report on crackdown against illegal HSRP dealers
The Uttar Pradesh transport department has directed all regional and enforcement transport officers to submit detailed reports on steps taken to curb the unauthorised sale and installation of high-security registration plates (HSRPs). In an official directive, transport commissioner BN Singh asked officers to provide updates on whether any unauthorised vendors have been blacklisted, FIRs registered with police assistance, or proposals sent for cancellation of type approval certificates. The department has also asked for data from enforcement drives carried out over the past six months, the formation of joint task forces with local police and administration, and public awareness campaigns discouraging the use of unauthorised HSRPs. Officials have been told to report whether the VAHAN portal is being actively monitored and if grievance redressal systems for vehicle owners are functioning efficiently. They have also been asked to specify if reports were submitted to headquarters following the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) directives. Additionally, the directive sought details of any special efforts made to promote HSRP compliance in rural and remote regions. 'This exercise aims to strengthen enforcement and guide future policy measures,' Singh noted in the directive.

Chandigarh ranks second in India for electric vehicle registrations in 2024-2025
Chandigarh: In a significant milestone, Chandigarh has been ranked second, after Tripura, for registering the maximum percentage of electric vehicles (EVs) out of the total vehicles registered in the city during the last financial year, 2024-2025. As per the data of ICE and electric vehicle (EVs) registration across the country, compiled by the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), the registering and licensing authority (RLA) of Chandigarh registered 14.82% EVs out of the total vehicles registered in the city in 2024-2025. Chandigarh beat major states and cities like Delhi, UP, Maharashtra, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, etc in terms of EV registration. The data, released by the Centre, shows that Chandigarh registered 47,348 vehicles in 2024-2025, out of which 40,332 are Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) or fuel vehicles, while 7,016 are electric vehicles. Tripura, which has the top rank in EV registration in 2024-2025, recorded 15.54% EVs in the state. A total of 60,501 vehicles were registered in Tripura in 2024-2025, out of which 51,100 are ICE or fuel vehicles, and the remaining 9,401 are electric vehicles. Goa stands third, with 11.78% EVs out of 82,607 registered in the financial year. "The significant amount of incentives for EV owners in the city, exemption in road tax for electric vehicles, availability of good quality electric vehicles and awareness towards the environment are some of the key factors encouraging people to opt for electric vehicles for daily use. Moreover, CREST is providing a hassle-free incentive facility to EV owners through online mode," sources said. As per records of the registering and licensing authority of the UT administration, over 20,000 electric vehicles have been registered in the city so far. Although the number of two-wheeler EVs registered is more than four-wheelers, a large number of people are also showing interest in four-wheeler EVs. Besides, registration of hybrid vehicles is also catching up in the city. Box: 34 charging stations in city As per records, currently, 34 EV charging stations are operational in the city at different locations. Since these charging stations are largely installed in parking lots of the city, they are easily accessible to people. Besides, the authority has started the process of installing six more charging stations. These additional charging stations will be set up at different locations, as per the requirement and feasibility after assessing locations.
