State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun ( pic ) said the delay followed a request from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof due to scheduling conflicts. Masidi clarified that the Chief Minister had sent two letters in June to federal leaders, including an offer for Sabah to host the meeting. He dismissed claims that the State Government had been inactive on MA63, stressing that official correspondence had been sent. Masidi said Fadillah informed them he was unable to attend the June 30 meeting, prompting a new date to be proposed. 'The meeting is now expected to be held on either July 14 or 15,' he told reporters during the SMJ Energy networking dinner on Wednesday. This came after Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan expressed frustration that Sabah was not chosen to host a federal technical committee meeting on the revenue entitlement and said he would seek clarification from the State Secretary. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? [UPDATED] IGP: IS-inspired group used WhatsApp, Telegram for recruitment, spread propaganda

KUALA LUMPUR: The recently crippled Bangladeshi radical militant movement based on Islamic State (IS) extremist beliefs and violent ideology used social media and messaging applications to spread their ideology, recruit new members and collect funds. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the group focused their efforts on recruiting Bangladeshis who worked in factories, petrol stations and construction sites. "They used social media as their medium to spread radical and extremist ideology and to attract more members. "They also widely used WhatsApp and Telegram to spread propaganda and organise secret activities, including oath-taking ceremonies and religious studies," he told a press conference at Bukit Aman. He said that the group only recruited their countrymen from the working community. "Members who swore the oath online would be made leaders of new cells established in certain areas to expand their influence," he said. Khalid added that further investigations were ongoing with 15 members still detained to obtain more information on their activities. "We are working together with our neighbouring counterparts as well as the authorities in Bangladesh. "We are also working on obtaining further information from Interpol, and we will expand our probe to ensure that their network links are identified," he said. It was reported that police detained 36 Bangladeshi nationals recently. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail was quoted as saying the planned security operation, which began on April 24, was carried out in three phases in Selangor and Johor. Of those detained, five individuals have been charged under Section 4A of the Offences Relating to Terrorism (Chapter VIA) of the Penal Code in the Shah Alam and Johor Baru Sessions Courts. Another 15 people have been issued deportation orders, while 16 others are under investigation for involvement in the militant movement. Intelligence gathered by the Special Branch revealed that the group had introduced IS-inspired ideology into the country and had formed recruitment cells within their community. Saifuddin said that Malaysia would not serve as a haven or staging ground for any foreign extremist movement.

Ukrainian drone crash kills one in southern Russia

MOSCOW: A woman was killed when a Ukrainian drone crashed into an apartment building in southern Russia, the region's acting governor said early Friday. A two-storey building in the village of Dolotinka in Rostov was 'damaged by a UAV crash, a floor slab collapsed, and as a result, a retired woman, a former teacher, died', Yury Slyusar said on Telegram. 'At the moment, the threat of a UAV attack remains in the Rostov region. All forces and means are on alert and continue to repel the enemy attack,' Slyusar said. He added that 20 residents were evacuated from the building. A man was also wounded by shrapnel in a Ukrainian drone attack on a district in the Moscow region, Russia's TASS news agency said Friday. It came as Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine's capital Kyiv overnight wounded 19, the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said Friday, adding that 14 had been hospitalised. The Russian strikes damaged railways, forcing passenger trains to divert with delays of up to two hours, according to Ukraine's national railway company. More than three years after the start of Russia's military offensive in Ukraine, fighting continues to rage, with efforts for truce at a standstill. - AFP
