IUML to hold protest meeting outside Kozhikode MCH
Addressing the media here on Monday, IUML district president M.A. Razak and general secretary T.T. Ismail claimed that corruption was rampant there. Back-to-back fire outbreaks, shortage of doctors and nurses, and scarcity of drugs were some of the major issues. They demanded that the government take immediate steps to address the problems.
Mr. Razak and Mr. Ismail alleged that there had been two fire outbreaks at the block housing the casualty section that had been constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) using ₹195 crore of Central funds. There had been lapses in the construction of the building. The investigation into these incidents, however, was an attempt to deceive the people, they alleged.
They pointed out that thousands of patients were awaiting their turn for the schedule of surgeries because of a shortage of doctors in the Department of Anaesthesia. This was a result of the transfer of a number of doctors to other medical college hospitals for the National Medical Commission's inspection. There was a shortage of doctors in the Department of Dermatology and Forensic Medicine as well, and post-mortem examinations were being delayed. P.M.A. Salam, State general secretary, IUML, would open the protest meet at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, they added.
Meanwhile, District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh is reported to have held a meeting with the hospital authorities on Monday. According to sources, there is no final word yet on reopening the PMSSY block, which was temporarily closed in May after the fire outbreaks.

Centre okays AI-based diabetic retinopathy screening in Raj
Jaipur: The Centre has approved Rajasthan's project to screen for diabetic retinopathy (DR), a serious eye condition caused by diabetes that can lead to vision loss. The initiative aims to identify early signs of retinal damage and provide timely treatment to prevent complications. In July, the state health department launched MadhuNetr DR-AI, an artificial intelligence-based system for DR screening using fundus cameras. Fundus photography helps in documenting retinopathy and counselling patients by visually demonstrating the impact of the disease. "We started MadhuNetr DR-AI considering the rising burden of diabetes. Retinopathy is a major complication and can cause irreversible vision damage," said Dr. Sunil Singh, State Nodal Officer for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The AI system enables early detection by grading the severity of retinopathy. Based on the results, patients are referred to ophthalmologists for further treatment. Initially, the screening was launched in five locations- Pali, Jalore, Deshnok (Bikaner), Karauli, and Beawar, where fundus cameras were already available. The health department is prioritising NCD prevention due to high prevalence rates. In May, it reported that 20% of the population above 30 years in the state suffers from diabetes, hypertension, or both—equating to 370 out of every 1,850 people in that age group. The department said 37% of the state's population is above the age of 30 years.

Central team assesses Nipah situation in Kerala
A Central team of scientists led by National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) joint director Pranay Varma visited different places in Palakkad and Malappuram districts as part of a joint combat operation against Nipah. A fresh team of scientists from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, is also expected to visit the Nipah- infected places in Palakkad and Malappuram. The NIV team led by Dileep Patil will survey bats in the areas. The Central experts held discussions with Malappuram District Medical Officer R. Renuka and expressed satisfaction at the measures adopted to prevent the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, Health Minister Veena George said 499 persons were under observation in the State for Nipah. While 203 of them are in Malappuram district, 116 are in Kozhikode, 178 in Palakkad, and two in Ernakulam. As many as 11 persons are under treatment in Malappuram and three in Palakkad. In Malappuram, 56 persons in quarantine tested negative for Nipah. In Malappuram, restrictions in 20 wards were lifted on Thursday. There will be no more containment zones in the district. However, in Palakkad, restrictions will continue. Six wards have been declared containment zones in Palakkad district. The district administration on Thursday warned against those violating restrictions in the containment zones.
