ITALIAN coach Stefano Pioli, who spent last season in charge of Saudi club Al-Nassr, is to return to Fiorentina, a club he previously coached and played for as a player, the Tuscan club announced on Saturday.
The 59-year-old succeeds his compatriot Raffaele Palladino, who resigned to everyone's surprise in June, a few weeks after extending his contract until 2027.
'Fiorentina announces that its new coach for its first team is Stefano Pioli,' the club said in a statement.
'Pioli, who returns to Florence after wearing the purple jersey as a player between 1989 and 1995 and having coached the club from 2017 to 2019, has signed a contract binding him to Fiorentina until June 30, 2028.'
Fiorentina finished sixth in Serie A last season which qualified them for the Conference League.
Pioli left Al-Nassr, where Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo plays, at the beginning of the week after just one season in charge, having guided the club to third place in the Saudi League.
His coaching career includes spells at Bologna, Inter Milan, Fiorentina and then five years at AC Milan with whom he won Serie A in 2021-22. - AFP

Motorcycling-Bastianini and Espargaro to race for KTM Tech3 in Brno

FILE PHOTO: MotoGP - Aragon Grand Prix - Ciudad del Motor de Aragon, Alcaniz, Spain - June 8, 2025 Red Bull KTM Tech3's Enea Bastianini before the race REUTERS/Pablo Morano/File photo (Reuters) -Enea Bastianini will race for KTM Tech3 at this weekend's Czech Grand Prix after recovering from illness and Pol Espargaro steps in for the injured Maverick Vinales, the MotoGP team said on Wednesday. The 27-year-old Italian, who joined Tech3 from Ducati last year, missed the German Grand Prix but is expected to return to the track on Friday in practice for Sunday's race in Brno. "It was really tough for me to remain in bed for so long and unable to join the team at the German Grand Prix, but I gave myself the time to recover properly in order to arrive in Brno in good shape," Bastianini said in a statement. Spaniard Vinales had surgery on Sunday for a fractured left shoulder, paving the way for compatriot Espargaro to make his return with Tech3, a team he debuted with in MotoGP back in 2014. "It's been a long time since our last visit to Brno, which is a fantastic track," Espargaro said. "The last time we raced here I felt super-good in my best period with KTM so let's see how it is with the new surface." (Reporting by Suramya Kaushik in Bengaluru; Editing by Alison Williams)

Jordan Henderson joins Brentford on free transfer from Ajax

ENGLAND midfielder Jordan Henderson has signed for Brentford on a free transfer, marking his return to the Premier League after stints with Ajax and Al-Ettifaq. The 35-year-old agreed to a two-year deal with the Bees, expressing his excitement about competing in the English top flight once again. Henderson, who left Liverpool in 2023, said, 'After a couple of years away, I still have that fire to come back and play in the Premier League again. Obviously, it's the best league in the world, with the best players. So it's a big challenge but one I'm keen on doing.' The move reunites Henderson with English football after a turbulent period that saw him leave Saudi Arabia's Al-Ettifaq just six months into a lucrative deal, followed by a short but impactful spell at Ajax. Despite criticism over his Saudi move, Henderson remains focused on his career, stating, 'When I was given the opportunity by Brentford and after speaking with the club, it became an easy decision.' Brentford's new manager, Keith Andrews, highlighted Henderson's leadership qualities as a key factor in the signing. 'He's been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years,' Andrews said. 'With experienced players leaving, it was important to replace that presence.' Henderson, who has 84 England caps, could face emotional reunions with former clubs Sunderland and Liverpool in the upcoming season. 'Both clubs mean a lot to me,' he acknowledged. 'But when I'm playing against them, there's no friends—we know that in football.' The midfielder's career includes major trophies such as the 2019 Champions League and 2020 Premier League title with Liverpool. His return to England could also boost his chances of adding to his international caps under manager Thomas Tuchel. - AFP
