Police officers among five killed in Marianhill Toll Plaza crash

The bodies of five people, including two policemen, have been recovered following a horrific accident near the Marianhill Toll Plaza on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal.
The accident happened on Friday night, 4 July.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements said the minibus taxi, carrying 17 passengers, was travelling to Ixopo when the driver reportedly lost control while trying to avoid a reckless Polo driver.
Five people were declared deceased on the scene, three were critically injured, while nine suffered moderate injuries and were rushed to RK Khan Hospital.
MEC Siboniso Duma said they are saddened by the death of five people in this accident caused by a polo driver, just after the Marrianhill Toll Plaza.
Duma said the minibus taxi veered off the road and plunged 50 meters down the embankment. The recovery of bodies has been completed.
'We lost four women and one male. Of the four women, one was a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in full uniform.'
'We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. We wish those in hospital a speedy recovery. We salute the emergency personnel, RTI, eThekwini Metro Police and rescue teams for their dedication,' Duma said.

This is a national disgrace!

The issue of South African Police Service (SAPS) officers being found under the influence of alcohol is deeply concerning. Unfortunately, this problem continues to persist, despite ongoing public concern, and it significantly undermines the integrity of the police force. Such behaviour does a disservice to the many dedicated individuals who aspire to serve their communities and our country. Numerous incidents have highlighted this ongoing challenge. For instance, a video that circulated on social media in 2021 showed an allegedly intoxicated SAPS officer passed out on the side of the road. In another instance, a police officer was seen struggling to speak while sitting on a public bench and then fell backwards onto the ground. More recently, we encountered a TikTok video allegedly showing a police officer appearing to be intoxicated. Additionally, a few years ago, a video clip surfaced of an off-duty officer stationed in Randfontein, Gauteng, who was found under the influence of alcohol. This conduct is particularly disheartening, especially given the overwhelming interest in police recruitment. Just last week, 185 000 young South Africans applied to join the police force within 48 hours of SAPS opening its latest recruitment process, clearly indicating a strong desire among many to serve. Yet, there are still police officers who disrespect the badge and the uniform. Incidents involving intoxicated officers in uniform are an embarrassment to South Africa, especially as we face a significant crime problem and a shortage of police officers. While many good police officers are out there, the actions of a few tarnish the reputation of the entire service. Police leadership must take decisive action against this kind of behaviour. Just as it is illegal, immoral, and unprofessional for doctors, teachers, lawyers, drivers, technicians, and others to report to work under the influence of alcohol, the same standard must unequivocally apply to police officers. There is no debate on this matter — it cannot be tolerated.

Municipality warns residents to avoid scammer posing as disconnection official

The Newcastle Municipality has issued a warning to residents about an ongoing scam involving a fraudster impersonating a municipal official. According to the Municipality's communications officer, Mthandeni Myende, a scammer is falsely claiming to be 'Kelvin Ndlovu, Head of Disconnection', and is using the cellphone number 078 838 9438 to contact residents. 'The scam involves the fraudster demanding payment into a personal bank account to prevent the disconnection of municipal services,' said Myende. Myende further confirmed that there is no such position as 'Head of Disconnection' within the Newcastle Municipality. Consumers are urged to be vigilant and reminded that all municipal accounts must be paid directly to the official municipal account, not to any individual. 'Anyone who may have fallen victim to this scam is strongly encouraged to report the incident to the South African Police Service (SAPS) without delay.'
