Isaac Mizrahi Readies for His ‘Democracy' Show

Yahoo10-07-2025
Isaac Mizrahi and his band will be back at 54 Below in New York next month with his show 'Isaac Mizrahi Survives Democracy.'Given the state of the world, that's one tall order, but the fashion designer is disciplined in his approach to deliver 'a searing look at where we are today.' The performances will be Aug. 6 to 9. Although he writes a good amount of material in advance, Mizrahi said 'sometimes the best lines come from me just extemporizing. I think that's why I have such stage fright. I prepare. I really respect an audience, and I want them to see a good show. And the music is rehearsed, rehearsed and rehearsed,' he said. 'And sometimes I just say things and that becomes what the show is about.'With music ranging from Billie Eilish to Cole Porter, Mizrahi chimes in about such subjects as politics, Pride and Ozempic. Having performed in Naples, Fla., and other locales like the Spoleto Music Festival in Charleston, S.C., he said the audience's enthusiasm varies. 'At Spoleto a few weeks ago, I did three shows. I was a little scared because it's the South and who knows who's sponsoring what,' Mizrahi said. 'But the first thing I said was 'Happy Pride.' And people just lost their minds.'He continued, 'The second thing I always say in the show is, 'Darlings, what the f–k are we going to do?' They loved it because people have been asking themselves that question.'His repertoire includes some lyrics he writes like ''Drop That Name,' which is just a bunch of names,' and 'The Cellphone Haiku,' which is written to one of my ringtones and has all of these very neurotic thoughts I have, when my cellphone rings.' There is also a tribute to the actor Timothée Chalamet, whom Mizrahi played a scene with in the upcoming film 'Marty Supreme.' Mizrahi said, 'We worked one day together. I don't know what he would do if he knew I was doing a tribute number to him. But he's so funny, wonderful and cute.'The designer was even more adulatory about Gwyneth Paltrow, who is also in the film that debuts Dec. 25. 'Gwyneth is so f–king talented. I had this tiny little scene with her, where I had nothing to do. But she had this big emotional reaction. They shot it like 17 times and she did it 17 times. I couldn't believe how great she was. She is really a good actor,' Mizrahi said. 'I played her publicist 'Merle.' That's the name of the character. I have had a few press agents myself along the way, so I had a few ideas.'The film's director Josh Safdie delves into subjects and did so for the film that is set in the 1950s. For his role, Mizrahi said he personally thought a lot about 'how people comported themselves in those days.'Mizrahi is also a contributing producer to the Hulu show 'Mid Century Modern,' and he has made a few cameos. Having looked at scripts and offered some ideas and jokes here and there, he hoped the show's co-creator Max Mutchnick will come see his 54 Below show.Mizrahi will also be performing his 'I Know Everybody' show on Aug. 10 at Guild Hall in East Hampton, N.Y., where he will tell stories about Liza Minnelli and Sandra Bernhard, as well as offer a tribute to Jon Hamm, who he 'barely knows.' Mizrahi said, 'He sort of flirts with me. That's what those gorgeous people do. They don't know they're doing it, but they do.' As for the current state of fashion, the designer said Jonathan Anderson's debut collection at Dior and Michael Rider's collection for Celine were 'thrilling.' He said, 'They don't look like a lot. You need to have to know something about clothes in order to love those shows. It's not showboating. It looks beautiful and it's about the clothes. If anything is going to reignite the clothing business, it's designers trying to differentiate between what they make for the red carpet and what they make for people to be influenced by or to actually wear.'
He added, 'That sounds like a crazy old fart thing to say. But after a while, there are only so many instructions that nobody cares about. I loved those collections, because they looked directional in ther nothingness.'

As for the Ozempic craze, he said, 'It looks like you've taken the stuffing out of the stuffed animal. It doesn't look natural or cool. It just looks like sad. People don't look happy when they're on Ozempic.'

Bachelor Nation stars, including Gabby Windey and Nick Viall, are returning to reality dating TV as hosts of their own shows

Windey and Viall are among the the latest 'Bachelor' franchise alums announced as hosts of brand-new reality shows. What happens after you appear on a reality dating series? For these Bachelor Nation alums, the next step is to host one. In the past week, Bachelor and Bachelorette stars Gabby Windey, Nick Viall and his wife, Natalie, as well as Kaitlyn Bristowe and Colton Underwood, have all been chosen to host different reality TV dating shows for Netflix and Hulu. Bristowe and Underwood are the latest Bachelor Nation stars turned reality TV cohosts. The pair, who had respective stints as leads of The Bachelorette and The Bachelor, were announced on Monday as the hosts of Hulu's upcoming reality dating series Are You My First? which follows a group of virgins as they journey to find a lasting romantic love. The show is set to premiere on Aug. 18, with all 10 episodes dropping at once. The Vialls, meanwhile, were announced as hosts of Netflix's age-gap reality dating series Age of Attraction on July 17. Windey, another Bachelor Nation alum who has emerged as a reality TV queen since her stint on Season 3 of The Traitors, will also return to the small screen, this time as the host of Love Overboard, a new reality dating series under Alex Cooper's Unwell Productions. Here's everything we know about these new dating shows so far. 'Are You My First?' First times, first loves and first heartbreaks are at the forefront of Hulu's upcoming reality dating series Are You My First? hosted by Kaitlyn Bristowe and Colton Underwood. Hulu's official synopsis of the show describes it as a 'groundbreaking new dating experiment' featuring 'the largest, hottest group of virgins ever assembled' as they 'search for intimacy, love — and maybe their first — in a tropical paradise designed just for them. For the first time, they're free to explore their connections without judgment, allowing these sexy young singles to embark on a heated yet heartfelt journey packed with romantic dates, revealing challenges, and new love interests eager to find 'the one.' Who will find that special someone? And who will go home hot, bothered and heartbroken?' Bristowe famously appeared on Season 19 of The Bachelor, and then once more as the lead on Season 11 of The Bachelorette. Underwood, before making history as the first lead in Bachelor franchise history to come out as gay, competed on Season 14 of The Bachelorette. All 10 episodes of Are You My First? will be released on Hulu on Aug. 18. 'Age of Attraction' Netflix announced that Viall and his wife, Natalie, who is 18 years his junior, are set to host an unscripted reality TV series called Age of Attraction. The show, according to Variety, will see a group of singles between ages 22 and 59 as they explore connections with one another to see if it's meant to last. The show, per Netflix, is described as a 'new dating experiment' that suggests 'it simply does not matter how many candles were on your last birthday cake or how few wrinkles have formed on your forehead.' Viall and Joy will help cast members 'search for their soulmates' and find out if 'age is just a number.' The eight-episode series, which was filmed in Whistler and Vancouver, British Columbia, is set to premiere sometime in 2026. 'Love Overboard' Windey, who made her Bachelor Nation debut as a contestant on Clayton Echard's season of The Bachelor in 2022 before costarring on Season 19 of The Bachelorette alongside Rachel Recchia, is returning to reality television — this time as a host. Alex Cooper's Unwell Productions has tapped Windey to host Love Overboard, a new reality dating series that takes place on a luxury yacht where contestants will compete for love and gain access to specific amenities based on how well their journeys are going. Hulu announced Windey as the show's host on July 14. According to the show's official press release, 'Get ready to hit the high seas with 'Love Overboard'! Step aboard the ultimate luxury yacht, where sexy singles are ready to mix and mingle … and find love. But there's a twist … gaining access to the yacht's extravagant amenities won't be so simple. As the journey unfolds, romance ignites; alliances form; and hearts are shattered. In the end, only one couple will reign supreme. Who will rise to the top, and who will be left stranded?' While an official release date hasn't been set, Love Overboard is expected to debut in 2026. Solve the daily Crossword

'Washington Black': Why Sterling K. Brown, Tom Ellis, Ernest Kingsley Jr. show had to film in Halifax

The new show Washington Black (now on Disney+ in Canada, Hulu in the U.S.) explores the history of Black settlements in Halifax in the adaptation of Esi Edugyan acclaimed novel. Filmed in the Nova Scotia capital, starring Sterling K. Brown, Tom Ellis, Ernest Kingsley Jr., Rupert Graves and Iola Evans, the series follows George Washington 'Wash' Black, an 11-year-old boy born on a Barbados sugar plantation, who ends up on an adventurous journey of hope and freedom. "I think what made the novel such an effective piece of work is that it has a core emotional DNA that's universal," creator, co-showrunner and executive producer, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, told Yahoo Canada. "People are always thinking about how to write a story that appeals to everyone, that gets to everyone, and I always say that you find universality in specificity." "There's something, sure, that starts in a very specific place about Wash and his challenges and his journey, the way he finds light out of darkness. But as you move that micro out to macro, that's all of us. ... We're all looking for that light at the end of the tunnel." Set in the 19th century, Wash develops an interest in science at a young age (first played by Eddie Karanja, later Ernest Kingsley Jr.), with inventor Christopher 'Titch' Wilde (Tom Ellis) taking him under his wing, becoming a mentor for Wash as they team up to create inventions, including a flying machine. In the later timeline Wash is living as a free man in Halifax, quickly crushing on Tanna Goff (Iola Evans), born on the Solomon Islands and raised by her white father, played by Rupert Graves, after her mother's death when she was young. "[They're both] discovering who they are, who you are told to be, versus who you feel you are inside," co-showrunner and executive producer, Kimberly Ann Harrison, said. "I think that we were able to explore that through [Tanna], in a different way." "The stories really kind of mirrored each other, ... just through the female lens. I really think that was important, to ... be able to platform her story and show her struggle with identity. And eventually, stepping into her own shoes of what she wants." Throughout the show's eight episodes, the audience is taken on a globe-trotting adventure through Wash's life. "We have lots of influences, but I have two really big ones. One on the literary side is Jules Verne. ... And the other one, as a kid in the '70s and the '80s, is Spielberg," Hinds said. "So in some ways Wash is sort of like those two worlds for me mashing together. And it was just a thrill to be able to find a project that allowed you to do that." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Disney+ Canada 🇨🇦 (@disneyplusca) There's something particularly compelling, unique and appealing about how Washington Black tells the story from a child's point of view, with Hinds highlighting that "children dream of the impossible." "I think putting the story in a child's eyes gives you access to a kind of imagination, a kind of dreaming, just a kind of emotional resiliency that's different with an adult character," he said. Additionally, there's an interesting exploration of how Wash is impacted by the mentors in his life, but they learn from him as well. "I think there's a lot that obviously Wash learned from his mentors, both in the past and present day, but at the same time a lot of these adults are learning life lessons from this child, from this enslaved child," Harrison said. "That's what really is special about this series." Filming in Halifax: 'We couldn't have faked this anywhere else' In order to have the authenticity required to effectively tell this story, Washington Black had to be filmed in Nova Scotia, while the crew behind the series also committed to connecting with the local community. "Authenticity is a word that we toss around a lot, and community. Even before we started rolling cameras in Halifax, we were there for months on the ground, just in pre-production," Hinds explained. "And during that time, were able to learn so much more about the history, learn so much more about the community, and go into the [Black Loyalist Heritage Centre] in Halifax. It was just an overwhelming, emotional experience, ... talking to people whose families have been there for hundreds of years." "So we really try to infuse the real place into the show, and that's part of ... the effect it has when you watch it." "We couldn't have faked this anywhere else," Harrison added. "This entire time in Halifax was a history lesson for me, in particular, and I just think that's what made it so special. And being authentic to the location and telling that story, I just think that's what brought it all together."
