Highly successful play Every Brilliant Thing tours Upper Egypt, Delta - Stage & Street - Arts & Culture

Al-Ahram Weekly09-04-2025
Following the success of its previous performances, Every Brilliant Thing, a play directed by Ahmed El-Attar, will embark on a special tour across Upper Egypt and the Delta in April and May 2025.
Every Brilliant Thing is a play written by Duncan Macmillan in the 2010s that tells the story of a heartfelt journey through a mother's suicidal depression and its repercussions on her family.
Highly innovative, it has seen great success on stages in the UK and worldwide.
Ahmed El-Attar, who also worked on the mise-en-scene, translated and adapted the play into Arabic. The translation was part of a bigger project titled "Theatre in Translation," which aimed to translate 24 contemporary plays by European playwrights into Arabic, each representing a different European country.
In its Egyptian version, the play features the Cairo-based Syrian actress Nanda Mohamed as the protagonist of the monodrama.
The play uses cultural connotations related to Egypt, making it very accessible to viewers, who are, at times, invited to participate in the performance.
The cultural references and interactions with the audience make the play particularly engaging and add a breeze of warmth to the otherwise somber topic of one of the worst psychological ailments.
Another component emphasising hope is the list of "all brilliant things" that Nanda experiences in life, which is partially read during the performance.

The play was staged several times in Cairo, receiving a full house on each consecutive run. It proved equally successful in its staging in Lebanon, at Beirut's Zico House and Studio Laban and Sharjah, UAE.
"The upcoming tour is part of a broader vision to bring contemporary theatre to a wider audience in Egypt, offering an interactive experience that celebrates life's small joys," reads the press release.
"The play invites audiences to actively participate in shaping the performance, making each show a unique and immersive experience. Supported by the British Council, the tour provides more audiences the opportunity to enjoy a theatrical journey filled with emotion and humor."
The tour will bring this special performance to several cities, including Assiut and Minya in Upper Egypt and Alexandria and Mansoura in the Delta.
The programme of the tour is as follows:
Assiut – El-Samayeen Theatre – 8 and 9 April, 7pm
Minya – Jesuit Theatre – 11 and 12 April, 7pm
Alexandria – Jesuit Theatre – 30 April and 1 May, 7pm
Mansoura – Misr Public Library – 3 and 4 May, 7pm

Musicians Syndicate Bans Ragheb Alama from Singing in Egypt

Rana Atef Mostafa Kamel, head of Egypt's Musicians' Syndicate, issued an official statement announcing the suspension of Lebanese mega star Ragheb Alama from performing in Egypt and summoning him for investigation over actions that took place during one of his recent concerts. Kamel said in an official statement that 'Over the past two days, I have observed disgraceful behavior that violates all Egyptian customs, traditions, and societal values—behavior we are not used to in our homeland and will not allow to be repeated on the land of Umm Kulthum, Abdel Wahab, Abdel Halim, and the greats of Arab art. Egypt's stages have been graced by the most esteemed artists of Egypt and the Arab world—artists of true talent and worth—and they have never been, nor will they ever be, a place for inappropriate kisses, suggestive gestures, and repulsive embraces.' In the same context, Khodr Alama, brother and manager of the Lebanese singer, responded to the statement issued by the Egyptian Musicians' Syndicate regarding the decision to ban Alama from performing in Egypt and to summon him for investigation over actions during a recent concert in the North Coast. In an exclusive statement to Youm7 TV, Khodr Alama said that they have not yet received any official notification regarding what has been circulated about the suspension of Ragheb Alama from performing in Egypt. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Amal Maher releases long-awaited new album Haga Gheir - Music - Arts & Culture

Renowned Egyptian singer Amal Maher released her new album, Haga Gheir (Something Different), on Sunday, 20 July, her first full-length album since 2019's Asl El-Ahsas. At the beginning of the 2020s, the 40-year-old star made a brief return with a handful of singles, maintaining a low profile. This was through a five-track EP, Ana Kwaiesa (I'm Fine), released in 2023, marking a return to her fans through concerts across the Arab region. The long-awaited new full album Haga Gheir consists of 10 new songs. Its release on YouTube and music streaming platforms further underscores her complete artistic resurgence. Days before the full album's release, Maher dropped one song, Khabar Agel (Breaking News), on 15 July. The song's music video soon reached 300,000 views on YouTube, paving the way for the consecutive nine tracks unveiled on Sunday. The songs quickly resonated with Maher's fans, with music videos of Odet Hayato (The Obsession of His Life) and Nseit Esmy (I Forgot My Name) racking up over 60,000 views within just hours of their release. The album showcases diverse themes and modern musical styles, reflecting the artist's ever-evolving creative journey. The Haga Gheir track blends traditional Arabic melodic patterns with modern pop production, creating a fresh yet familiar sound. The orchestration includes rich strings layered with electronic beats, emphasizing Amal's powerful vocal delivery. Equally pronounced pulsating electronic beats and synth layers open Nseit Esmy, a track that fuses Spanish guitar with mainstream Arabic pop. Latin accents are additionally emphasized by a music video presenting flamenco dancers. Emotional ballad Leh Sektu? (Why Did You Stay Silent?) blends classical guitar with Arabic rhythms and rich oriental percussion. Another romantic ballad, Law Leena Omr (If We Had Time), evokes a cinematic feel through its arrangement, which capitalizes on open string lines and layered harmonic textures, laying a rich carpet for Maher's vocal showcase. The emotional release comes with solo piano, allowing listeners to savour the song's melancholy. Maher's album stands out through a compelling blend of traditional Arabic elements and contemporary influences, topped with electronic beats, pulsating synths, and flamenco-inspired Latin twists. In all those creative meanders, Maher's voice finds a great platform to shine, showcasing its many values that only reassure us of her incredible talent, skills, and emotional depth, all of which continue to thrive. In this album, Maher collaborated with a select group of renowned lyricists, including many tracks penned by Nader Abdullah, as well as composers such as Madian, Mohamady, Ahmed Zaeem, Amr El Shazly, Islam Refaat, and Ayman Bahgat Kamar. This helped her bring diversity and richness to the style and content. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
