No Wi-Fi at Kolkata airport since November, international flyers land in digital death zone
KOLKATA: Visitors flying into Kolkata from abroad are facing significant connectivity issues upon landing at the airport, with no Wi-Fi service available since Nov last year. And, with no SIM card retail outlet in the arrival lounge, this means those without international roaming services are unable to connect with their hosts upon reaching the city or book an app cab or access their travel documents and hotel bookings.
Airport officials say they are aware of the problem and trying their best to restore Wi-Fi but a tender floated to rope in an internet service provider is yet to get a favourable response. 'We will also speak to the agency manning retail shops inside the airport to see if it is feasible to have a SIM card retail counter,' said a senior airport official.
Internationally, flyers can log into airport Wi-Fi free for 45 minutes by providing passport number and email.

Ankur Upadhyay, who recently returned home from the UK, took to X to express his anguish. 'Landed at Kolkata airport only to be stranded without any Wi-Fi and internet! Couldn't even go to my pre-booked hotel as I didn't have any internet access to get an Uber! I didn't have any Indian SIM card! What kind of 'international' airport has no internet? Had a smooth transition in Doha airport earlier! How can we compete with places like Dubai and Doha when we can't even provide a basic airport need of Wi-Fi to passengers? Shockingly out of touch!' wrote Upadhyay, who pursues doctoral research at University of Warwick .
Another passenger, Shayak Chakraborty, too expressed his disappointment on X last month: 'It's unfortunate that NSC Bose Int'l Airport, Kolkata (CCU) has no Wi-Fi for passengers in the departure & arrival area of the international terminal... Please look into it.' Several travel bloggers, too have also highlighted the connectivity issue.
Previously, even when Wi-Fi was available at the airport, international passengers without local mobile numbers were unable to log in.
AAI airports nationwide offer 45 minutes of complimentary Wi-Fi, requiring Indian mobile numbers for authentication. International visitors are required to obtain OTP credentials from airport help desks by presenting their passport and tickets. However, Kolkata airport lacks proper guidance and signage for this service.
'Once Wi-Fi is restored, we will solve this issue as well with help desks at prominent places with appropriate signage,' said the official.
According to an official, AAI's tender for Wi-Fi service rights at Kolkata airport offers a five-year contract with a possible two-year extension based on performance. 'We have floated a new tender but are yet to get a vendor yet. Under the proposed contract, passengers will be entitled to 45 minutes of free Wi-Fi per day at a minimum speed of 5 Mbps and with a data cap of 500 MB. Beyond this threshold, standard internet tariffs will apply,' he said adding that the vendor would be required to deploy robust cybersecurity measures, ensure 180-day log retention and provide access logs to law enforcement agencies upon request.
'We have set a July 31 deadline by when we intend to solve this issue.'

But he is less likely to feel intimidated as a young Indian captain. Gill belongs to the modern age of Indian cricket, a trendsetting generation where many are stars even before playing an international. Gill was barely 18 when the spotlight fell on him with India's U19 World Cup win. A starring role in a youth World Cup win isn't a mere footnote; it often leads to a gainful IPL contract, adulation. The Lord's honour board is one of the alluring preserves of the ground. Sachin Tendulkar never scored a Test hundred there, but Ajit Agarkar, did batting at No.8. Wearing his chief selector's hat, he will help decide if the No.8 position still holds the same importance. In the first Test at Leeds, India picked Shardul Thakur, who could neither score runs nor bowl useful spells. At Edgbaston, Washington Sundar proved his utility not just by playing his part in the 144-run stand with Gill for the seventh wicket, but he also took an important second innings wicket, that of Ben Stokes. India's 2021 Test win defending 271 runs was set up by four genuine quicks. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said workload management will apply for other bowlers too. 'The workload management is not only for Bumrah. Every bowler's fitness, issues are different. But I think there is enough rest in between Tests. After this match, there is a turnaround. But, Siraj is someone who bowls a lot. So, his workload management depends on how much load he has (carried) with red ball before coming into the series. The bowling coach and our S&C (strength and conditioning coach) will keep a track on that,' he told the media at Lord's.

Ventive, Marriott expand partnership to add 6 new hotels in India by 2030
The hospitality division of Panchshil Realty, Ventive Hospitality, on Tuesday announced the expansion of its partnership with international hospitality chain Marriott to build six new hotels in India by 2030. The Blackstone-backed company, which listed on the bourses in December last year, is signing management contracts for upper upscale and upscale hotels in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Mundra in Gujarat, and Pune and Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra. This will add over 1,400 branded rooms to the country. According to hospitality consultancy firms Hotelivate and Horwath, the branded hotel room count in India is expected to grow to 300,000 by 2030. Two of these hotels—the 161-room Varanasi Marriott Hotel and the 200-room Courtyard by Marriott at Mundra—are being developed by Ventive Hospitality and its subsidiaries. Meanwhile, the proposed 450-room JW Marriott and the 200-room Moxy in Navi Mumbai, as well as the 264-room Moxy Wakad and 200-room Moxy Kharadi in Pune, are being developed by the promoter group companies on Right of First Offer (ROFO). The American hospitality chain currently operates over 155 hotels and more than 29,000 rooms across more than 40 Indian cities. Earlier this year, Anthony Capuano, President and CEO of Marriott International, had stated that he expects India to become Marriott's third-largest market within five years, as the country's travel and hospitality sector continues to witness strong growth. "We will continue the momentum we enjoy in the upper, upscale, and luxury segments. We will also look at the lower end of the chain scales and create more opportunities for the value-conscious inbound international traveller and the domestic traveller," he had added. "We're excited to begin FY2026 on a strong note, particularly as it is our first financial year post-listing. This partnership not only strengthens our two-decade-long relationship with Marriott International but also marks a pivotal moment in our journey to redefine India's hospitality sector," said Atul Chordia, Chairman and Executive Director of Ventive Hospitality, in a release. "By leveraging Marriott's global expertise and our deep real estate knowledge, we aim to create distinctive destinations that elevate guest experiences for both business and leisure travelers, driving growth in the luxury and upper-upscale segments and expanding our footprint beyond Pune, Bengaluru, and the Maldives. This collaboration underscores our commitment to aggressive growth while maintaining prudent leverage," he added.
