KBO-leading Hanwha Eagles acquire all-time hits king Son Ah-seop
The Hanwha Eagles said they traded for NC Dinos outfielder Son Ah-seop in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2026 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) draft and 300 million won ($215,000) in cash. The deal came on the annual trade deadline.
The Eagles entered Thursday's action leading the KBO with a win-loss-tie record of 58-37-3, poised for their first postseason trip since 2018. Son, 37, will be asked to strengthen the offense that ranks in the middle of the pack in runs, hits and on-base plus slugging (OPS).
Son sits atop the career hits rankings with 2,583 after 2,134 games. He is a lifetime .320 hitter and is batting .300 this season in 76 games, along with 33 RBIs.
Son enjoyed a streak of 14 consecutive seasons with at least 100 hits from 2010 to 2023, before the run ended in an injury-plagued 2024 season, when he finished with 95 hits in 84 games.
Son had been with the Dinos since 2022, after spending the 14 previous seasons with the Lotte Giants.
The Eagles noted that Son has a career postseason OPS of 1.008 and his big-game experience should help the club if they make the postseason.
"He has been a consistent force throughout his career with his great work ethic and discipline," the Eagles said. "We expect him to serve as an exemplary role model for our young players."
The Dinos are also in the postseason hunt. They ranked eighth at 44-45-5 but were only one game out of the fifth and final postseason spot prior to Thursday's games.
Dinos general manager Lim Sun-nam said getting a draft pick in exchange for Son was "a strategic decision" to solidify the team's prospect base.
"It was not an easy call to send away Son Ah-seop, who has been a key part of our team," Lim added. "But we wanted to ensure our competitiveness for the future, and this move will help lay foundation for our retooling and sustainable growth." (Yonhap)

Son Heung-min will start Sunday's preseason match for Tottenham Hotspur in what will be his final appearance for the Premier League club in his native South Korea. Son drew into the starting lineup against Newcastle United for an 8 p.m. kickoff at Seoul World Cup Stadium, a day after announcing he will leave Tottenham this summer. Kim A-lim 1 off lead at LPGA major entering final round
Kim A-lim is one stroke off the lead heading into the final round of the last LPGA major tournament of the season. The South Korean went five-under 67 in the third round of the AIG Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Porthcawl, Wales, on Saturday (local time), reaching eight-under for the tournament. The bogey-free round put Kim alone in second place, one shot behind Miyu Yamashita of Japan. At the start of the third round, Kim was eight strokes back of Yamashita, who was leading the way at 11-under after going 68-65 over her first two days with just two bogeys combined. But Kim nearly caught her by draining five birdies for her first bogey-free round at a major tournament this season, while Yamashita made only two birdies against four bogeys. Kim drained a birdie putt from about 23 feet on the first hole and made another birdie attempt from long distance on the fifth hole. She nearly made an eagle at the par-5 13th, where she grabbed the fifth and final birdie of her round. Kim sent her tee shot into the rough on the par-3 15th but saved par there. Kim won the season-opening tournament, Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, in February. The 19 LPGA tournaments so far in 2025 have produced different champions -- the longest such streak in tour history -- and Kim will now try to become the first multiple winner of this season. Kim, who won the 2020 U.S. Women's Open as a nonmember, is pursuing her second career major title and her fourth LPGA victory overall. The last South Korean player to win an LPGA major is Amy Yang, who claimed the KPMG Women's PGA Championship title in June 2024. And Yang was the first one from the country to win a big one in two years. Kim, who missed six out of 14 fairways but hit 16 greens in regulation, said she tried to focus on hitting low shots in windy conditions. "I honestly don't remember how I played this round," Kim said with a smile. "I just gave my best on each and every hole." When asked what the best part of her game was during the third round, Kim replied, "Trajectory control." "My caddie and I focused on ball flight," she said. "Ball control is more important this week. Throughout my LPGA career, I've been trying to figure out how to play well in the wind and control my shots in every possible situation. I feel that I've been improving every year, and that's what makes it more fun." Though she has put some pressure on Yamashita and reached the cusp of her second major title, Kim said she will stay locked in on her own game. "Honestly, I'm not focused on the leader," the 29-year-old said. "I focus on my process and my shot and then my position. That's all." Kim has made $698,788 so far this season, and a victory in Wales will net her $1,462,500 and vault her into the top 10 on the money list. Son Heung-min set to join LAFC as one of MLS' top earners: reports
Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min, who recently announced his decision to leave the club after a decade, is reportedly close to signing with Major League Soccer's Los Angeles FC in a deal that would make him one of the US league's top three highest-paid players. British outlet GiveMeSport reported Sunday that negotiations between the two sides are expected to proceed swiftly after Tottenham's Coupang Play Series match against fellow Premier League team Newcastle United, which is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. Sunday at Seoul World Cup Stadium. The game is part of both teams' preparations ahead of the 2025–26 Premier League season, which begins on Aug. 15. Son has already shown interest in a move to LAFC and is currently negotiating personal terms with the club, according to the report, citing industry sources. If the transfer is finalized, there is a strong likelihood that he will earn more than Inter Miami's star midfielder Sergio Busquets, who ranks third on the MLS salary list, with an annual income of $8.7 million. With a salary exceeding Busquets', Son would be positioned right below global superstar Lionel Messi ($20.4 million) of Inter Miami and Lorenzo Insigne ($15.4 million) of Toronto FC in the league's salary rankings.
