UAE unveils new Arabic-language AI model Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Daily Tribune22-05-2025
The United Arab Emirates yesterday announced a new Arabic-language artificial intelligence model, describing it as the best-performing in the region.
The oil-rich Gulf state, keen to become a leader in the sector, previously unveiled Falcon in 2023 -- an open-source model developed by Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute. "We're proud to finally bring Arabic to Falcon, and prouder still that the best-performing large language model in the Arab world was built in the UAE," said Faisal Al-Bannai, secretary general of Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Research Council, which oversees the project.
Falcon Arabic was trained on Arabic-language data covering various dialects across the region and matches "the performance of models up to 10 times its size", said a statement.
The council also announced Falcon H1, a new model designed to cut the computing power and technical expertise typically needed to run advanced systems.
During US President Donald Trump's visit to Abu Dhabi last week, the two countries signed an AI agreement that includes Emirati investment in American data centres.

Bahrain Pushes Experiential Tourism Talent Exchange

TDT | Manama Bahrain has called for a new chapter in Arab tourism cooperation, proposing experiential talent exchanges and unified regional travel packages at a high-level meeting in Cairo this week. The Kingdom, currently presiding over the Arab Technical Tourism Committee, presented a suite of action-oriented proposals during the committee's 13th session. Noora Al Saadoon, Director of Policy and Planning at the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), chaired the meeting and urged member states to transition from planning to implementation in cross-border tourism collaboration. Regional mobility One of Bahrain's headline proposals was the launch of joint Arab tourism packages. These integrated itineraries would enable tourists to visit multiple destinations within the region in a single trip, an effort designed to increase stays, boost spending, and strengthen the Arab world's collective appeal as a seamless travel experience. The session also tackled how to build a more resilient tourism sector amid fast-changing global travel patterns and technological disruption. Capacity-building focus Al Saadoon introduced a second major Bahraini initiative: an 'experiential learning exchange' that would allow Arab tourism professionals to gain hands-on experience across destinations and administrative institutions within the region. She said this initiative would strengthen both institutional and human capital, enabling Arab tourism entities to adapt more effectively to global demands while fostering deeper professional links across borders. Implementation next The committee's recommendations, including both Bahraini proposals, will be submitted to the Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism at its upcoming session. Final approval and implementation timelines are expected to follow. With its leadership role in Cairo, Bahrain has signalled a strategic shift in Arab tourism from conceptual alignment to concrete execution.

Arab Students Access China's MIT

TDT | Manama Six students from Arab League nations have been awarded places at China's top-ranked Tsinghua University through a landmark new scholarship programme, marking the first time the prestigious institution has offered a dedicated scholarship exclusively for Arab students. The Hazem Ben- Gacem Arab Scholars Program, officially launched at a ceremony in Beijing on Monday, will support up to 15 students each year over the next five years for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Tsinghua, widely regarded as the 'MIT of China,' is known for its elite engineering and technology programmes and its alumni include many of China's current leaders. Historic initiative The scholarship was launched in the presence of diplomats and senior officials, including Bahrain's Ambassador to China, H.E. Dr Mohamed Shaikho and Professor Yang Bin, Vice Chancellor of the Tsinghua University Council. Organisers say the initiative aims to promote academic excellence, build cross-cultural ties, and enhance the strategic relationship between China and the Arab world. 'This programme reflects more than just academic support,' said Hazem Ben-Gacem, the founder of the scholarship and Chief Executive of BlueFive Capital. 'For more than a thousand years, the Arab region and China have been bound by a vibrant exchange of goods, knowledge, and cultural dialogue. We aim to cultivate leaders who will carry forward this agelong spirit of curiosity and collaboration.' Ben-Gacem, who formerly served as co-CEO of Investcorp, has previously established scholarships at Harvard, Oxford, and other top global institutions. His latest effort is seen as part of a growing trend of Arab investment in education diplomacy and global talent development. Shared values Tsinghua University officials described the programme as a milestone in the institution's global engagement. 'This initiative not only motivates recipients to pursue academic excellence but also strengthens the friendship between Tsinghua and the Arab world,' said Professor Yang. 'It embodies the shared values of openness, inclusiveness, mutual respect, and the pursuit of common progress.' Established in 1911, Tsinghua has 20 colleges and 90 undergraduate programmes.

Stocks climb as strong US jobs data pushes off rate hike

Stock markets rose and the dollar slid yesterday as strong jobs data showed the resilience of the US economy and reduced the likelihood of interest rate cuts. Investors were also keeping a close eye on President Donald Trump's bid to push through a tax-cutting budget and reach trade deals. London's stock market and the pound recovered, having taken a knock Wednesday on rumours that British finance minister Rachel Reeves faced losing her job. Oil prices fell, with OPEC and the cartel's crude-producing allies expected to announce a rise to output Sunday. Investors had been keenly awaiting the US government's monthly non-farm payrolls report, seen as one of the best data points on the health of companies and the labour market. Job growth came in at 147,000 last month, beating expectations, and rising from an upwardly revised 144,000 figure in May. 'The much stronger nonfarm payrolls data means a July rate cut is now no longer in consideration, which is music to stock market bulls' ears,' said City Index and FOREX. com analyst Fawad Razaqzada. Wall Street's main indices opened higher, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite pushing up from record closes. 'But with the July 9 tariff deadline looming next week, can stocks retain their gains ahead of the long weekend?,' added Razaqzada. US markets are closed on Friday for US Independence Day celebrations, but negotiators from several nations are racing to reach trade deals with Washington ahead of the deadline imposed by Trump. Yesterday's jobs numbers comes one day after a smaller survey showed the US private sector unexpectedly shed jobs last month for the first time since March 2023. That suggested that the US economy was beginning to be hit by the uncertainty caused by Trump's trade war.
