Mas Gading MP calls out government agencies for lack of cooperation
KUCHING (May 14): Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol has called on government agencies—whether at the federal or state level—to act professionally and serve the people.
In a Facebook post, the second term MP from the Democratic Action Party (DAP) voiced his frustration over the lack of cooperation from government agencies, which he believes is due to his political affiliation.
Mordi said he could no longer contain his frustration after multiple failed attempts to meet the agency responsible for several pressing issues in Mas Gading, including flooding in Jalan Buso and a house in Kampung Apar, Singai, which may collapse at any time due to road construction.
According to him, additional concerns include culverts removed during construction and left unreplaced in Kampung Segong, as well as damaged roads and land sinking in Kampung Sebobok and three other locations along Jalan Stass.
He stressed that these issues require urgent attention—or at the very least, an explanation from the responsible agency. As the elected representative, he said it is his duty to seek answers for the people.
'This (lack of response) always happens when I try to get cooperation from the agencies.
'We wrote emails, we wrote letters, we texted (them) through WhatsApp, we called them. (We) Set the appointments, and then got postponed and then cancelled. Same cycle every time. And worst (of all), some don't respond at all. Is this the kind of system that you want to see?' he said.
He acknowledged that his post might receive negative reactions, but after much thought, he decided to share his frustrations because he believes the public deserves to know the challenges he faces.
'I remember there's one time when we tried to make an appointment with this one particular agency, and my staff was told: 'We are not allowed to cooperate with the Member of Parliament'. At that time, I could still hold on to my feelings. But this time, I really cannot hold on anymore. This is just too much.
'I don't blame that officer, but the instructions he received (are what) made me angry. We have heard complaints from internal staff/officers who felt bad about not cooperating with my team due instructions from their superiors.
'In such cases, they don't lose. I don't lose either. But the (real) losers are the people. (This is) Because the safety, welfare and interests of the people are at stake because of politics,' he said.
As such, he reminded government agencies that their role is to serve the people—not just elected representatives.

Political motivations behind rising cyberattacks in Indonesia in mid-2025, report says
JAKARTA: Online intimidation against critics of public officials and government policies in the form of cyberattacks has risen in Indonesia in the second quarter of this year, according to a recent report. The report, released by digital rights advocacy groups South-east Asia Freedom of Expression Network (SAFEnet) on Wednesday (July 30), recorded 168 incidents of cyberattack between April and June. The figure rose from 139 in the first quarter of the year and 90 in the same period in 2024. The attacks, which peaked in May with 65 cases, ranged from hacking and account suspensions to doxing and identity theft. But digital intimidation remained the most prominent type of attack with 42 cases. Among the list of victims, students were found to be the most targeted with 40 incidents involving them. They were followed by private employees, ordinary citizens and activists with 25, 23 and 16 incidents, respectively. 'Compared to the first quarter, we found more cyberattacks with political overtones,' SAFEnet's head of freedom of expression M. Hafizh Nabiyyin said during the report's launch. Some incidents were found to be related to many hot-button political issues. An example was several Instagram users who had their accounts suspended after criticising the controversial revision of the Indonesian Military Law, which was passed by the House of Representatives in March despite public opposition. Account suspensions also occurred against users criticising the controversial nickel mining operation in Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua, after environmental group Greenpeace Indonesia shared videos showing nickel mining activities in one of the islands in the area. SAFEnet also noted that at least eight people experienced cyberattacks after posting satirical comments on X pertaining to the alleged involvement of Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad and former communications minister Budi Arie Setiadi in illegal gambling operations. Both politicians have denied the allegations. After posting their contents, the eight users reportedly received a barrage of anonymous calls and messages through WhatsApp from domestic and international numbers, including ones coming from Thailand and the Philippines. 'The callers forced the victims to delete their posts and threatened to leak sensitive personal data such as their mothers' name, licence plate numbers as well as ID card photos and numbers,' the group wrote in the report, alleging that the attacks showed 'a clear political motive to suppress public dissent'. Another case saw a stand-up comedian being targeted after making jokes about West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi during a performance in the provincial capital of Bandung in May. After the clip of his performance went viral, several Instagram and TikTok accounts doxxed the comedian and his relatives' home addresses. 'This phenomenon indicates a new form of politically motivated digital repression, which not only intimidates, but also undermines the sense of security in expressing opinions in online public spaces,' the reports said. SAFEnet noted that platforms under tech company Meta remained the most common sites of attacks, with 68 incidents recorded on Instagram, 53 on Whatsapp and 18 on Facebook. Other platforms, such as X and TikTok, saw at least 10 cases each. The report also highlighted other pressing digital rights issues, including a spike in online gender-based violence with 665 reported cases, higher than 422 reported in the first quarter of 2025 or the 465 during the same period in 2024. The rights group still welcomed a much-lauded Constitutional Court ruling on the Electronic Information and Transactions Law in April, in which justices prohibited its use by the government and corporations against their critics. However, SAFEnet emphasised that the ruling has not fully guaranteed freedom of expression in the digital realm so far. 'To date, there is still a tendency to criminalise others using the cyberlaw's loose articles, which often continues into a formal investigation and even the court process,' the group wrote in the report, 'which could harm the victims' financial, physical or psychological state.' The Jakarta Post asked the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) for a comment on the report. But PCO expert staff Insaf Albert Tarigan declined to comment, saying on Thursday (Aug 1) that he had not heard about the report. - The Jakarta Post/ANN

Nearly 30 DAP MPs visit Umno HQ, hosted by Zahid

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Close to 30 DAP MPs visited the Umno headquarters at Menara Dato Onn earlier this week, in what one leader described as a historic first for both parties. Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin said the MPs were there for a briefing on technical and vocational education and training (TVET), hosted by deputy prime minister and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid also chairs the national TVET council. 'It marked the first time that such a large group of DAP MPs visited Umno's headquarters, a sign of maturity and cooperation within the unity government,' Chan said in a Facebook post. 'The Madani government is not perfect. But we are serious in discharging our responsibilities. 'We are working to overcome ideological and party differences for the sake of national progress. Nation-building requires unity, not uniformity, and that's the spirit we're committed to.' The DAP leaders who attended the briefing included the party's secretary-general Loke Siew Fook, adviser Lim Guan Eng, and vice-chairman Chong Chieng Jen. Also present were Umno vice-president Johari Ghani and secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. Umno played a key role in the formation of the unity government, joining hands with its former archenemy, DAP, in the aftermath of the 2022 general election. In June 2023, Loke joined Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at Menara Dato Onn to attend that year's Umno general assembly, marking the first time that a DAP leader had attended the annual event. DAP MP slams MCA leader's remarks over meeting at Umno HQ

PETALING JAYA : Kampar MP Chong Zhemin has hit out at MCA deputy president Mah Hang Soon over his social media remarks ridiculing 30 DAP MPs who visited Umno's headquarters for a briefing on technical and vocational education and training (TVET). Chong said Mah's comments, including describing the MPs as 'infatuated schoolgirls' and 'so aroused it shows' were vulgar, demeaning and aimed at sowing discord within the unity government. He said the Aug 1 briefing, chaired by deputy prime minister and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his capacity as head of the national TVET council, was strictly about policy matters. 'The purpose of the visit by 30 DAP MPs was crystal clear: to strengthen policy coordination on TVET, improve resource allocation, and promote inter-ministerial cooperation,' he said in a statement today. 'This was part of normal administrative coordination within the unity government. It had nothing to do with political symbolism, and certainly does not require unsolicited criticism from MCA through a narrow partisan lens.' Chong also defended the choice of venue, saying Umno's headquarters was one of Zahid's official workspaces. He questioned why Mah had not voiced similar objections when MCA leaders, including the party president and youth chief, previously visited the building while in government.
