Stay tuned, satcom services may come to you by year-end
Satellite communication services
could be commercially launched in India by December, according to industry executives, with three major players - Bharti-backed
Eutelsat OneWeb
,
Reliance Jio-SES
and Elon Musk-owned
Starlink
- having secured the necessary permits and clearances and the government working on finalising terms of allocating spectrum.
"Trai (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) had given its recommendation in May. The DoT (Department of Telecommunications) typically takes two to three months on the outer side to come back with its recommendations and present it to the DCC (Digital Communications Commission)," a senior executive at one of the satcom companies, which has secured all the permits, said on condition of anonymity. "Once the DCC gives its approval, it needs to be vetted by the cabinet. Then the DoT needs to come out with its rules for allotment. Optimistically, the government is likely to be in a position to give spectrum by October."
After spectrum allotment, it would take around a month to start commercial services, according to two executives.
"We are looking at a November-end or December timeline (for launch of commercial services) at an optimistic level," said the first executive.
Eutelsat OneWeb, Jio-SES and Starlink didn't respond to ET's queries.
On Wednesday, US-based Starlink became the third satcom operator after Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio-SES JV to get a clearance from the space regulator, Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), to start commercial satcom services in the country. Starlink received its Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) permit last month.
Two other global satcom services firms - Jeff Bezos-owned Amazon Kuiper and Apple's satcom partner Globalstar - are awaiting approvals from the Indian authorities.
India's space economy has a potential to hit $44 billion by 2033 and account for about 8% of the global share, as per IN-SPACe. The country's annual satcom business revenue opportunity is pegged at $1 billion.
The DoT is expected to finalise pricing and rules for allocating satellite spectrum administratively, having receiving recommendations from Trai after a bitter fight between telcos, which wanted the satcom spectrum to be auctioned, and satcom companies such as Starlink and Amazon Kuiper, which wanted the airwaves to be allotted administratively. The government and Trai have since decided on administrative allocation.
"We don't believe any of the players will have a head start in launching commercial services. Since Airtel and Jio are also partners of Starlink, we expect all three (Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio-SES) to start at the same time because that makes sense from a technical, commercial and a compliance standpoint," said Rohan Dhamija, partner and head of India & Middle East at Analysys Mason.
Jio and Bharti Airtel, part of the Bharti Group, which is a large shareholder in Eutelsat OneWeb, have marketing tie-ups with Starlink.
Conceding that Jio-SES and Eutelsat OneWeb have lost out on the chance for a head start in offering satcom in India, a senior executive at one of the two firms said India also lost out in the process.

Costa Coffee's India FY25 sales jump 30%, gross margin declines marginally
British coffee chain brand Costa Coffee's India revenue from operations surged 30.76 per cent to ₹198.5 crore in FY25, and its profit rose 28.4 per cent to ₹149.7 crore. The growth was driven by store expansion, as the number of outlets increased from 179 to 220 in FY25, according to the latest annual report of Devynai International Ltd (DIL). Its revenue from operations was ₹151.8 crore, and profit stood at 116.6 crore for the financial year ended March 31, 2024. Costa Coffee's gross margin declined marginally to 75.4 per cent from 76.8 per cent in FY24, primarily because of inflation in coffee beans and other input materials. "The brand contribution margin came down from 17 per cent to 16.1 per cent, with average daily sales (ADS) per store declining from ₹33,000 to ₹27,000, translating into a reduction of same store aales growth (SSSG) from 8.7 per cent to 4.1 per cent during this period," said DIL. Costa Coffee is operated in India through its franchise partner DIL, a leading QSR (Quick Service Restaurant) chain operator. Earlier this year, in April, Costa Coffee's Global CEO Philippe Schaillee, who was on a visit here, told PTI that India is going to be among the top five global markets for the British coffee chain brand. The coffee brand, now owned by beverage major Coca-Cola, is currently among the top ten global markets. "Costa Coffee is aggressively expanding in India, targeting 40-50 new outlets annually despite global economic uncertainties. DIL sees India as a high-potential market, driven by a growing preference for premium coffee among millennials and Gen Z," said DIL. This trend is manifest in the fact that the coffee space in the country is growing at 10 to 12 per cent, double the rate of global markets. "India, which is among Costa's top 10 markets globally, has the potential to get into the top five markets in five years, and Costa Coffee is just the sweetly aromatic spot to seize this strong opportunity," the report said. According to DIL, India, which is largely a 'chai' (tea) loving nation, is becoming a country of a growing populace of coffee lovers, with a massive cultural shift in its drinking habits over the years. Coffee is now the first love of many Gen Z Indians influenced strongly by Western culture, which is often a part of their work ethos. "At Costa Coffee, this has actuated a strong focus on expanding the brand's presence in high footfall locations, such as airports and multiplexes," said DIL. In the Indian cafe market, Costa Coffee competes with international chains such as Starbucks, Tim Horton, McCafe, and Dunkin'. Besides, local chains like Cafe Coffee Day, Blue Tokai, Third Wave Coffee and Barista are also amplifying their play in the fast-growing cafe market in India.

Lodha Developers eyes ₹1,500 crore rental income in FY31, says MD
Lodha Developers is targeting a six-fold jump in the annual rental income by 2030-31 to ₹1,500 crore, which will cover almost the entire interest and salary cost of the company, its MD Abhishek Lodha said. After capturing a decent market share in the housing segment, Mumbai-based Lodha Developers intends to scale up its commercial real estate business. It is building office complexes, retail projects and industrial and warehousing parks, besides entering into facilities management. The company's annuity income, which includes rents from leased commercial assets, stood at ₹250 crore in the last fiscal year. In a letter to shareholders, Lodha Developers MD and CEO Abhishek Lodha said the company now aims to have a reasonable annuity income portfolio over time. He said the "aim is to have ₹15 billion (Rs 1,500 crore) annuity income by 2030 (FY31)". Abhishek noted that the targeted annuity income for 2030-31 would be enough to cover almost the entire interest and salary costs of the company. During the 2024-25 fiscal year, the company acquired land in Chennai and Delhi-NCR for warehousing parks. "Leasing at various parks is progressing well, and we are continually enhancing our high street retail portfolio alongside our residential projects. We look to meaningfully grow in annuity income in the next few years," Abhishek said. At present, Lodha Developers has a commercial portfolio of 8.4 million square feet, of which 2.1 million square feet is retail, 1 million square feet of office space and 5.3 million sq ft of industrial and warehousing parks, according to an investor's presentation. Out of this 8.4 million square feet area, 3 million square feet were leased till March this year. From the current portfolio, the company expects a total annuity income of Rs 1,150 crore in FY31. About Rs 550 crore will be from office and retail space, while nearly Rs 300 crore will come from warehousing parks and Rs 300 crore from facilities management. It will increase the size of its commercial portfolio in the coming years to reach the targeted annuity income of Rs 1,500 crore in FY31. In the letter to shareholders, Abhishek outlined the vision of the company for the short, medium and long term. He also talked about the importance of having predictable growth with consistency to reduce business risk. In housing, Abhishek said the company is strategically positioned to continue to grow pre-sales at about 20 per cent CAGR (compounded annual growth rate) over a long period. In 2024-25, the company's pre-sales or sales bookings stood at a record Rs 17,630 crore, up 21 per cent annually. Addressing shareholders in the annual report for the last fiscal, he said the company is focusing on mid-income, premium and luxury homes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Pune and Bengaluru markets. Going ahead, Abhishek said, the company would focus on scaling its presence in these three markets and would enter a new city in the pilot phase. He said the company remains committed to keeping its leverage at a very conservative level, where net debt to equity will be below 0.5 times. "As we expand, we remain resolute in integrating sustainability at the core of our developments, ensuring they are future-ready and resilient," said Abhishek. Lodha Developers has built more than 100 million square feet and is developing more than 110 million square feet under its ongoing and planned portfolio. Its net profit increased to Rs 2,764.3 crore in 2024-25 from Rs 1,549.1 crore in the preceding year. The total income grew to Rs 14,169.8 crore last fiscal from Rs 10,469.5 crore in the 2023-24.
