Man City re-sign goalkeeper Trafford from Burnley on five-year deal
Englishman Trafford, who won the golden glove with 29 clean sheets in the Championship last season, has re-joined the club where he spent eight years as a youth player for £27 million (US$36 million), English media reports said.
"Rejoining City is such special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City," Trafford said in a statement shared by City.
"This is the place I call home – it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play."
Trafford played on loan at third-tier sides Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before making a permanent move to Burnley in 2023, where he played his first full season in the Premier League, making 28 appearances as the club was relegated.
But the six-foot-six keeper returned to form in the Championship last season, with Burnley conceding only 16 goals in the campaign, 14 fewer than champions Leeds United.
"I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving – and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be," Trafford added.
City, who begin their quest for a seventh Premier League title in nine seasons when they visit Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 16, said Trafford would wear the number one jersey. — REUTERS

Yu Zidi, 12, makes history as youngest medalist at World Aquatics Championships
SINGAPORE, Aug 1 — China's Yu Zidi made history at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships by becoming the youngest-ever medallist at just 12 years old. She earned bronze as part of China's 4x200 metres freestyle relay team, having swum in the heats to help the team qualify for Thursday's final. Although she didn't race in the final, her contribution secured her a place on the podium under competition rules. Australia took gold in 7:39.35, followed by the US with silver (7:40.01), and China in third (7:42.99). Yu narrowly missed individual medals earlier in the week, finishing fourth in both the 200 metres butterfly and 200 metres medley — missing bronze by just 0.31 and 0.06 seconds, respectively. She will have one final chance to win an individual medal in the 400 metres medley on Sunday. Yu's appearance has sparked debate over age eligibility, as World Aquatics typically requires athletes to be at least 14. However, her performance times qualified her despite being underage.

(EPA Images pic) LONDON : Nottingham Forest have signed Swiss winger Dan Ndoye from Serie A side Bologna on a five-year deal, the Premier League club said today. Financial details of the transfer were not revealed by either club but British media reported Forest paid a fee of around £34 million for the 24-year-old Switzerland international. Ndoye joined Bologna in August 2023 from Swiss side Basel for around €10 million. He made 41 appearances for Bologna across all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and registering six assists. He scored the winning goal against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final, helping Bologna secure their first major trophy in 51 years. 'It is a really exciting time at Forest and I knew straight away that I wanted to be a part of the project. It's a really ambitious team with a fantastic history and I can't wait to get started,' Ndoye said. Ndoye could take the place of former Forest winger Anthony Elanga, who joined Newcastle United earlier this month and also played mainly on the right, like Ndoye. Since making his international debut in 2022, Ndoye has earned 22 caps for Switzerland, starting all five matches at Euro 2024 during their run to the quarter-finals. Forest, who secured a solid seventh-place finish last season, begin their Premier League campaign at home against Brentford on Aug 17.

West Ham midfielder Paqueta cleared of alleged betting breaches by FA
LONDON: West Ham United's Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of four alleged breaches of betting rules after an independent Regulatory Commission hearing, the Football Association said on Thursday. Last year, the 27-year-old was charged with deliberately seeking to receive a booking during four Premier League games between November 2022 to August 2023 against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bournemouth. The FA said it was alleged that Paqueta sought to influence the progress, conduct, or any other aspect of, or occurrence in those matches by deliberately trying to get booked to manipulate the betting market for the benefit of others. "Paqueta denied the charges against him, and a Regulatory Commission found them to be not proven following a hearing," the FA said in a statement. The Brazilian has been charged with two breaches in relation to alleged failures to comply with his obligations to answer questions and provide information to the FA investigation. Paqueta, who was facing the risk of a lifetime ban, denied the alleged spot-fixing charges and expressed frustration over media coverage of the matter, which he said was misleading. "Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations," Paqueta said in a statement on Thursday. "I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face. To my wife, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me, thank you." The FA began their investigation of the alleged betting breaches in August 2023. In October last year , Paqueta urged the FA to investigate how information from its case against him had been leaked to the media. "We are pleased Lucas has been cleared ... as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process," West Ham Vice-Chair Karren Brady said. "Despite the incredible pressure on him, Lucas has performed week in and week out for the club, always giving everything. It has been a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he has remained absolutely professional throughout." West Ham, who struggled to a disappointing 14th-place finish last season, begin their 2025–26 Premier League campaign at promoted Sunderland on August 16. -REUTERS
