Yatra organisers bar tourists from taking photos, force them to remove shoes in Meghalaya cave
Locals have consistently objected to attempts to designate the cave as a religious site, insisting it is a geological heritage location, not a shrine. Over 250 yatris arrived at the natural sandstone cave to offer prayers, drawing strong resentment from the Dorbar Shnong (village council) and many members of the local tribal community. Mawsynram (Meghalaya), Aug 3 (PTI) Tourists visiting the Mawjymbuin Cave in Meghalaya's Mawsynram were reportedly asked to remove their shoes and refrain from taking photographs by organisers of a Hindu religious yatra on Sunday, triggering criticism from various quarters, including local tribal groups. Debojit, a tourist from Kolkata, said he and his family were shocked when they were forced to comply with the restrictions. 'We came as tourists, but were treated in a manner we found unacceptable. There should be some logic behind such rules. I have lodged a complaint with the village elders,' he told PTI. The yatra began in recent years, but faced local opposition which led the Dorbar Shnong to impose restrictions on religious activities and littering in the area. The Meghalaya High Court in a recent order permitted the Hindu religious procession to proceed up to the cave, provided it should not disturb public order. Noted geologist Eladbor Laloo countered claims that the cave contains a 'holy Shiva Lingam'. 'The structure inside the Mawjymbuin Cave is not a holy Shiva Lingam, but a stalagmite formed through natural limestone deposition over millions of years,' Laloo stated. He explained that the cave is part of a limestone formation shaped by water seepage through cracks over geological time, forming stalactites and stalagmites. He said thousands of geology students visit the site each year as part of their academic fieldwork. Laloo urged tourism guides and stakeholders to promote the cave as a site of geological importance, not religious significance. 'Tourists must verify the origins of the places they admire before assigning religious sentiment,' he said. While the yatra organisers maintained strict protocols for their members, there was noticeably less littering in the cave vicinity and along the route – unlike in previous years, when visitors had left behind discarded plates, food, and plastic bottles. They, however, expressed satisfaction over the peaceful and successful completion of the event. Security was tight, with hundreds of police personnel and magistrates deployed along the yatra route to ensure safety and maintain order. Sri Lanka starts issuing temporary driving license to tourists at airport
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Colombo, Aug 3 (PTI) Sri Lanka on Sunday launched a programme to issue temporary driving licenses to tourists at the international airport. 'Foreign tourists and even Sri Lankan visitors to the country, who are not dual citizens, would be issued these licenses valid for a month," Kamal Amarasinghe, the chief of the Motor Traffic Department, said here. The tourists getting these temporary licenses would, however, be not eligible to drive heavy vehicles and three wheeler tuk-tuks, Amarasingha said. Currently, any tourists could have obtained a license at the Department's Colombo suburban facility following the due process, he said, adding, the new arrangement is a more swift process where tourists can self drive. Technical snag: Air India cancels Singapore-Chennai flight; offers refunds and hotel stay
Representative image Air India on Sunday cancelled its Singapore to Chennai flight AI349 following a technical issue that required extended maintenance work. The flight, scheduled to be operated using an Airbus A321, was grounded after a pre-departure check flagged the problem. In a statement issued on Sunday, the airline said, 'Flight AI349 scheduled to operate from Singapore to Chennai has been cancelled due to a maintenance task identified prior to departure, which required additional time for rectification.' As per news agency PTI, arrangements are underway to fly the affected passengers to Chennai at the earliest. The airline is offering hotel accommodation and has assured full refunds or complimentary rescheduling, depending on each passenger's preference. Air India also said that its ground staff in Singapore are making "every possible effort" to minimise inconvenience for the passengers caused by this unforeseen disruption. This latest cancellation adds to a spate of recent technical snags reported on Air India aircraft. On Thursday, a Delhi-London flight (AI2017) operated on an ex-Vistara Boeing 787 Dreamliner had to return to the terminal after the pilots suspected a technical issue. 'The cockpit crew decided to discontinue the take-off run following standard operating procedures and brought the aircraft back for precautionary checks,' an Air India spokesperson said. An alternative Dreamliner was later arranged for the journey. Similarly, on July 25, an Air India Express flight bound for Doha was forced to return to Calicut airport due to a fault in the cabin air conditioning system. 188 passengers were on board, and the flight landed safely after two hours in the air. The airline later provided food and water to passengers and arranged a replacement aircraft. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
