BINTULU (May 15): Sarawak recorded 6,724 road accidents from January to April this year, resulting in 120 deaths, 47 serious injuries, and 102 minor injuries, said state Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
Citing data from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), he noted that the vast majority of these incidents, totalling 6,502 cases, involved only vehicle damage.
However, he highlighted that 108 of the total accidents were fatal, emphasising the severe consequences of negligence on the road.
Lee said this to reporters during the Sarawak-Level Road Safety Campaign for Gawai Dayak 2025 at Petronas petrol station Jalan Sibiyu today.
According to Lee, the Sarawak Police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) identified rear-end collisions as the leading cause of accidents, with 2,236 cases recorded.
Other causes of accidents include skidding due to speeding (1,481 cases), side collisions at junctions (1,421), sideswipes (381), and head-on collisions (281), along with additional factors such as reversing, hitting objects or animals, rollovers, and pedestrian collisions.
'These numbers reflect one sobering truth: driver behaviour remains the primary cause of accidents,' he said.
He stressed the profound impact of each accident, representing an altered life, an affected family, and a potentially lost future.
Adding to the concern, Lee noted that the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) reported that motorcyclists and youths continue to be the most at-risk groups in fatal crashes nationwide, a trend also observed in Sarawak.
In response, he said the Ministry of Transport Sarawak has launched a Gawai-themed road safety sticker initiative, inspired by previous festive efforts.
'These vibrant stickers, adorned with cartoon characters in traditional Dayak attire, aim to deliver critical safety messages in a creative, engaging format to Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who are known to appreciate such collectables,' he explained.
He pointed out that while festive seasons bring joy, they also lead to a surge in traffic volume and associated risks.
'We want to celebrate Gawai with happiness, not grief. These small initiatives can make a big difference in fostering a safety-first mindset,' he said.
The campaign is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Transport Sarawak, the Bintulu Resident's Office, the Bintulu Division Road Safety Council, and Petronas Dagangan Berhad.
Also present to show their support to the campaign were Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming and Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee. lead Lee Kim Shin Sarawak-Level Road Safety Campaign for Gawai Dayak 2025

Humanitarian mission backs Long Tepen Penans in land rights struggle

George ( left) hands over the donation to the representatives of the Penan community in Long Tepen. MIRI (July 24): The Penan communities from Tinjar and Belaga, along with members of the Dayak community, have extended humanitarian aid to the Penan folks of Long Tepen, Baram, who are currently engaged in a peaceful blockade to defend their ancestral land rights. The solidarity initiative involved the delivery of essential food items and moral support to the community, which has maintained its presence at the protest site. Led by Gilbert Magok, the contributions included mineral water, rice, coffee, sugar, and instant noodles, all of which were handed over to the Long Tepen residents. A community representative, who wished to be identified as George, told The Borneo Post that the initiative stemmed purely from a place of concern for their fellow indigenous brethren and bore no connection to political groups or external agendas. 'It is a purely humanitarian nature, and this donation serves as a moral support and a sign of solidarity for our tribe to continue being strong in fighting for our customary land rights,' George said. He said the effort was part of what the community called a 'Dayak peace trust', which took place on Sunday, July 20. 'My tribe and I completed what we call the Dayak peace trust,' he said, highlighting how the collective effort brought together indigenous communities from across the region. Support came from the Penans in Tinjar Lapok and Urun Belaga, alongside members of the Sarawak Dayak community, and the Padawan Bidayuh tribes. 'The donation was intended to ease the daily challenges faced by those stationed at the blockade location, where Long Tepen residents continue their peaceful demonstration to protect their ancestral lands,' George said. He reiterated that the mission is entirely non-political, focusing instead on strengthening inter-tribal unity in the face of shared challenges. The Long Tepen community has been engaged in a blockade against logging activities by a company operating in the area. Two men, aged 52 and 57, were reportedly arrested on June 30 by the police for allegedly obstructing Sarawak Forest Department officials from carrying out their duties. The duo was remanded for four days before being released on bail, pending further instructions from the Sarawak Attorney General's Chambers. ancestral land rights humanitarian aid Long Tepen Penan

No Evidence To Back Claims On Jho Low's Whereabouts

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- The Home Ministry, through the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), continues to work closely with international authorities and enforcement agencies to track down fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, whose whereabouts remain unknown despite recent claims. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said checks and information received to date have found no credible evidence regarding Jho Low's current whereabouts or his use of any passport. 'With regard to certain reports linking this individual to specific locations and passport use, I stress that these claims remain unverified and unsupported by any solid evidence to date. So they remain allegations,' he said at a press conference after visiting the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) here today. Recently, claims surfaced suggesting that Jho Low, who is implicated in the 1MDB scandal, is now residing in an upscale area in Shanghai, using a fake Australian passport. On NSRC, Saifuddin said the current operations centre will be relocated to its own premises in Cyberjaya this September. The new site will be equipped with updated facilities, a larger space and a complaints counter to make it easier for the public to lodge reports in person. 'This decision (to relocate the operations centre) will be accompanied by the creation of 139 new posts and the addition of more agencies. For now, I've mentioned four, but in principle, we have also agreed to include two more agencies — the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Securities Commission. 'This move is aimed at further strengthening NSRC, and with the inclusion of these two new agencies alongside the existing four, the centre will be better positioned to fulfil its functions,' he said. Currently, NSRC comprises four agencies: PDRM, Bank Negara Malaysia, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the National Financial Crime Prevention Centre.
