Thibout Courtois ends Real Madrid's 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund with a leaping save
Courtois leapt to his right, extended the long arm on his 6-foot-7 frame and just managed to get his gloved fingertips on the ball, knocking it down.
Courtois hit the ground as the ball bounded up. He looked skyward, planted his right hand to regain his balance, grabbed the ball with both hands on the second bounce and fell onto it with his chest.
Sabitzer turned his back to the goal and put both hands on his head as Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti walked by, raised both hands and blew the final whistle.
'In football it's like this. All the teams that are here, they compete until the end,' Courtois said after Real's 3-2 victory Saturday. 'A game could become like this at any minute and that's what happened at the end.'
Voted the top goalkeeper in 2018, Courtois has won a pair of Champions League titles with Real Madrid along with a two Premier League championships and four in La Liga. 'We are so lucky that we have Thibaut on goal because Thibault is one of those keepers that makes you win games and today that save has been so decisive,' Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said.
Gonzalo García and Fran García scored in the first 20 minutes as Madrid built a 2-0 lead.
Dortmund's Maximilian Beier scored three minutes into stoppage time and Kylian Mbappé, who entered in the 67th, restored a two-goal lead with his bicycle kick one minute later.
Serhou Guirassy converted a penalty kick in the eighth minute of added time after he was fouled by Dean Huijsen, who received a red card and will miss the semifinals.
Courtois then came up with a stop for the ages.
'It is a great big save. That's the reason why he is the best goalkeeper in the world,' Dortmund coach Niko Kovač said.
Madrid advanced to a semifinal match against Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, a day after Chelsea meets Brazilian club Fluminense.
'The nervousness, we need to learn to be more calm in the next game and finish the game in possession,' Courtois said.

Padres right-hander Yu Darvish set to make his season debut Monday night against Arizona
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish will be activated from the injured list and make his season debut Monday night at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Japanese star has been sidelined since spring training by right elbow inflammation. 'It really just comes down from a physical standpoint,' manager Mike Shildt said before the Padres finished a series against Texas on Sunday night. 'We always have an open day on the schedule for Yu Darvish to start.' Making a start Monday night will allow Darvish to make another start before the All-Star break. Darvish, who turns 39 on Aug. 16, threw a bullpen session Saturday after throwing two simulated games against minor leaguers in the last two weeks. Darvish missed significant time in 2024 with an elbow injury and a personal issue. He made five starts in September and finished the regular season with a 7-3 record and a 3.31 ERA. He pitched well in two starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a National League Division Series, earning the win Game 2 and taking the loss in Game 5. Giants' Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Randy Rodriguez named National League All-Stars
Three San Francisco Giants pitchers will be heading to Atlanta for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game on July 15. Starters Logan Webb and Robbie Ray and reliever Randy Rodriguez were selected to the National League All-Star team. Webb, 28, is 8-6 with a 2.62 ERA over 120 1/3 innings, which is the most innings pitched in the NL as of Sunday. He is second in the NL with 133 strikeouts. Webb appeared in the All-Star Game in 2024, making this his second selection. Ray, 33, is 9-3 with a 2.68 ERA over 107 1/3 innings this season. It's his second All-Star selection, with the only other coming in 2017. He won the American League Cy Young in 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays, but was not selected to the All-Star game. This will be Rodriguez's first All-Star Game. The 25-year-old has posted a 0.71 ERA in 38 innings.
