Thibout Courtois ends Real Madrid's 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund with a leaping save

Associated Press21 hours ago
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Real Madrid's Club World Cup quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund had taken three crazy turns during nine minutes of second-half stoppage time when Marcel Sabitzer chested the ball and sent a right-footed volley toward Thibout Courtois' post.
Courtois leapt to his right, extended the long arm on his 6-foot-7 frame and just managed to get his gloved fingertips on the ball, knocking it down.
Courtois hit the ground as the ball bounded up. He looked skyward, planted his right hand to regain his balance, grabbed the ball with both hands on the second bounce and fell onto it with his chest.
Sabitzer turned his back to the goal and put both hands on his head as Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti walked by, raised both hands and blew the final whistle.
'In football it's like this. All the teams that are here, they compete until the end,' Courtois said after Real's 3-2 victory Saturday. 'A game could become like this at any minute and that's what happened at the end.'
Voted the top goalkeeper in 2018, Courtois has won a pair of Champions League titles with Real Madrid along with a two Premier League championships and four in La Liga. 'We are so lucky that we have Thibaut on goal because Thibault is one of those keepers that makes you win games and today that save has been so decisive,' Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said.
Gonzalo García and Fran García scored in the first 20 minutes as Madrid built a 2-0 lead.
Dortmund's Maximilian Beier scored three minutes into stoppage time and Kylian Mbappé, who entered in the 67th, restored a two-goal lead with his bicycle kick one minute later.
Serhou Guirassy converted a penalty kick in the eighth minute of added time after he was fouled by Dean Huijsen, who received a red card and will miss the semifinals.
Courtois then came up with a stop for the ages.
'It is a great big save. That's the reason why he is the best goalkeeper in the world,' Dortmund coach Niko Kovač said.
Madrid advanced to a semifinal match against Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, a day after Chelsea meets Brazilian club Fluminense.
'The nervousness, we need to learn to be more calm in the next game and finish the game in possession,' Courtois said.

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw, Yoshinobu Yamamoto named NL All-Stars; Yusei Kikuchi to represent Halos

Dodgers starting pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Yoshinobu Yamamoto were named to the National League All-Star Game on Sunday, joining three other Boys in Blue who will be representing the team next week in Atlanta. They'll suit up alongside the NL's leading vote-getter in Shohei Ohtani, first baseman Freddie Freeman and catcher Will Smith, all three of whom were picked by the fans as starters. Even though he's only started nine games so far this season, Kershaw made history in his most recent start by securing his 3,000th career strikeout. He sports a 4-0 record with a 3.43 ERA and 32 Ks in just over 44 innings pitched. His selection comes at the hands of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, who named Kershaw as the 65th All-Star with the "Legend Pick," the first since 2022 when it was used on both Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols. Yamamoto, on the other hand, has been the Dodgers most consistent starter. In 17 starts, Yamamoto has 96 and 2/3 innings pitched with 109 strikeouts and a 2.51 ERA. He was one of Major League Baseball's six National League picks. The Dodgers lead the way in All-Star selections with five, followed by the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners, who have four selections each. He is a three-time NPB All-Star, last appearing in the game in 2018, the season before he signed with Seattle out of Japan. Kikuchi was one of MLB's six American League picks, thanks in large part to his strong showing to start the 2025 campaign. In 18 starts, he has a 2.81 ERA and 106 strikeouts. 2025 All-Star Game rosters The 2025 All-Star Game, the 95th in MLB history, is slated to take place on Tuesday, July 15 at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Padres right-hander Yu Darvish set to make his season debut Monday night against Arizona

SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish will be activated from the injured list and make his season debut Monday night at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Japanese star has been sidelined since spring training by right elbow inflammation. 'It really just comes down from a physical standpoint,' manager Mike Shildt said before the Padres finished a series against Texas on Sunday night. 'We always have an open day on the schedule for Yu Darvish to start.' Making a start Monday night will allow Darvish to make another start before the All-Star break. Darvish, who turns 39 on Aug. 16, threw a bullpen session Saturday after throwing two simulated games against minor leaguers in the last two weeks. Darvish missed significant time in 2024 with an elbow injury and a personal issue. He made five starts in September and finished the regular season with a 7-3 record and a 3.31 ERA. He pitched well in two starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a National League Division Series, earning the win Game 2 and taking the loss in Game 5. The Padres went from having a 2-1 lead in the series to failing to score in the final 24 innings against the eventual World Series champions. ___ AP MLB:

Giants' Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Randy Rodriguez named National League All-Stars

Three San Francisco Giants pitchers will be heading to Atlanta for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game on July 15. Starters Logan Webb and Robbie Ray and reliever Randy Rodriguez were selected to the National League All-Star team. Webb, 28, is 8-6 with a 2.62 ERA over 120 1/3 innings, which is the most innings pitched in the NL as of Sunday. He is second in the NL with 133 strikeouts. Webb appeared in the All-Star Game in 2024, making this his second selection. Ray, 33, is 9-3 with a 2.68 ERA over 107 1/3 innings this season. It's his second All-Star selection, with the only other coming in 2017. He won the American League Cy Young in 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays, but was not selected to the All-Star game. This will be Rodriguez's first All-Star Game. The 25-year-old has posted a 0.71 ERA in 38 innings.
