Khiladi Akshay Kumar reveals he takes inspiration from Tom and Jerry, not Tom Cruise: ‘Tom is hanging on a plane…'

Hindustan Times18-06-2025
While Akshay Kumar is the OG Khiladi and action king of Bollywood, Tom Cruise is the biggest action star of Hollywood. Well, lately their high-octane action stunt sequences have been the talk of the town, with many netizens comparing the two. In one particular viral video, Akshay is seen doing a stunt on an airplane for his 2000 film Khiladi 420. Right under this, playing simultaneously, is a clip of Tom performing a similar stunt on a plane in a Mission: Impossible film. Akshay has now reacted to this viral video which has taken social media by storm.

In a recent chat with Pinkvilla, Akshay Kumar revealed that he drew inspiration for his stunts from the beloved cartoon Tom and Jerry, not Tom Cruise. He was quoted saying, 'You know where I draw all this inspiration from. You will not believe it from Tom and Jerry.' Akshay went on to add, 'I love watching Tom and Jerry. I think it is the most violent thing. It is very violent. It is apparently made for children, but actually, if you look, there is so much action. I remember Tom coming from the helicopter, hanging and picking up Jerry, so I did that in Sabse Bada Khiladi. Then, Tom is hanging on a plane which is there in Khiladi 420.'

Akshay further described the children's cartoon as 'violent'. He stated, 'It is so violent. Please try to understand; it is a violent film you are showing your children (laughs).' On the film front, Akshay has already had three releases this year — Sky Force, Kesari Chapter 2 and Housefull 5. Up next, the Bollywood superstar will be seen in the upcoming Telugu film Kannappa as Lord Shiva before taking theatres by storm with Jolly LLB 3 co-starring Arshad Warsi. Akshay has also been in the news lately regarding Priyadarshan's Hera Pheri 3, where the actor will reprise his beloved character Raju once again.

‘Akshay Kumar's wife came to know of a relationship with Priyanka Chopra, it was unethical of him to quit film': Suneel Darshan

Actor Priyanka Chopra alluded to being cornered by certain forces in Bollywood, which was one of the reasons why she chose to switch base to the United States and begin afresh abroad. Among the many controversies that hounded her during her rise in the Hindi film industry was her rumoured affair with Akshay Kumar. They worked together in the films Andaaz, Aitraaz, and Waqt: The Race Against Time in three successive years. They were also supposed to work together in the film Barsaat, and had even shot a song for it. Director Suneel Darshan said in a recent interview that the rumours of a relationship reached Twinkle Khanna, Akshay's wife, that forced him to present director Suneel Darshan with a tough choice. He told his frequent creative collaborator that it was going to have to be either him or Priyanka, and Suneel went with Priyanka. None of the actors involved, however, ever commented on the controversy. In an interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Suneel opened up about that chapter in his career, and said that it was one of the reasons he and Akshay drifted apart after working on seven films together. 'One beautiful song was shot between Akshay and Priyanka before they broke off… When it was time to get back for the final schedule, during which the entire movie had to be made, I was called by Akshay to his set. Seldom was I called to his sets, so I was surprised. He informed me that there were some issues that were uncontrollable, and there were some repercussions on his personal life. He requested me to take a decision on how to move further. I can't remember the exact words, but it was about having either him or Priyanka in the movie.' Also read – 'It was an ugly turn in her life': Karisma Kapoor became a 'trophy wife' after marriage with late husband Sunjay Kapur, says Suneel Darshan Asked what made Akshay present him with this choice, Suneel said, 'It's not about him not wanting to work with Priyanka Chopra. Circumstances had reached a point… The public, the media did mention a relationship, which the wife got to know of. But suddenly, after making me wait for 18 months, to say that I can't be a part of the film, I was shocked… He did want to compensate by saying he'd do the next film with me, but I just thought it was unbelievable, coming from Akshay.' In a previous interview, Suneel suggested that Twinkle actually 'left' Akshay after discovering his rumoured affair. 'Kuch blunder aise ho chuke thay (He did some blunders). Some rumours about Priyanka Chopra and Akshay Kumar started doing the rounds and Twinkle had left his home. As an actor you have to be responsible. If your wife has been an actress, she knows everything about the industry and she has also worked with all the big stars. She knew everything,' he said in an interview with Friday Talkies. Suneel said that Akshay had basically been written off by the industry after delivering a string of flops, which was when he approached him for work. They agreed to do Jaanwar together, and subsequently, Akshay's career was reignited. Suneel claimed that Akshay promised to do 100 films with him, but their streak came to an end at seven. He eventually signed Bobby Deol for Barsaat, but Priyanka stayed on because she wasn't the one who put the 'unethical' condition on him. They worked together on one more film, but Suneel said that he realised that the working chemistry had fizzled out by then. 'I realised it was time up,' he said, mentioning that he hasn't met Akshay in two decades.

Hollywood strikes back in Indian cinemas, but the real test lies ahead

Hollywood appears to be staging a comeback in India after two lacklustre years, with recent titles like Superman, Jurassic World: Rebirth, F1: The Movie, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning seeing robust box office returns. In several cases, they've even outperformed Indian films. This uptick follows a period of slowdown caused by Hollywood's writers' and actors' strikes and the underperformance of major superhero films, particularly from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Yet, trade experts warn that the revival is mostly limited to urban audiences, and even blockbuster titles are not achieving the pre-pandemic box office highs. Mission: Impossible earned over ₹110 crore in India since its May release, while Jurassic World has crossed the ₹82 crore mark. The biggest surprise, however, has been Brad Pitt's sports drama F1, which collected over ₹72 crore—despite limited dubbed releases and minimal promotion. Market share still low Hollywood's share in Indian theatrical revenues had peaked at ₹1,595 crore in 2019, per media consulting firm Ormax. But the pandemic years took a toll, and box office collections dropped to ₹941 crore in 2024, shrinking its market share from 15% to just 8%. Footfalls too halved—from 9.8 crore in 2019 to just 3.8 crore last year. Despite recent momentum, Hollywood remains 15–25% below pre-covid levels, analysts say. Urban pull, rural lag 'While some of the recent films have done well and proven Hollywood box office is still alive in India, business hasn't gone back to where it was pre-covid," said Rahul Puri, managing director of Mukta Arts and Mukta A2 Cinemas. Puri pointed out that Hollywood films are largely thriving in major cities, particularly through premium formats like IMAX. But audiences in tier-two and three towns haven't returned in similar strength. One major roadblock is inflexible pricing that doesn't cater to smaller town sensitivities. The real test, Puri said, will come next year with Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday, which promises a convergence of multiple MCU timelines. That film will be a benchmark to determine if Hollywood can truly regain its former dominance in Indian cinemas. Franchise vs fresh fare Vishek Chauhan, an independent exhibitor, agreed the recovery isn't complete: While films are flirting with the ₹100 crore mark, business hasn't gone through the roof or hit the same numbers as say, Avengers: Endgame, which crossed ₹370 crore in 2019. Devang Sampat, managing director of Cinepolis India, noted 2024 lacked major impact. '2024 was not an impactful year for Hollywood in India. 2025 has started strong with a great balance of non-franchise films such as F1 and Sinners and franchise titles like Mission: Impossible and Superman doing well. However, there is still some way to go for full recovery as we are yet to see a movie in the post pandemic era, which touches the Avengers: Endgame status," said Sampat. Sustainable efforts through marketing are required to drive customers to experience lesser known genres. Usually, good movies from Hollywood disappear without a trace at the Indian box office due to lack of marketing, he added. Streaming fatigue Still, some experts see opportunity in upcoming line-ups and a growing fatigue with home streaming. 'Hollywood films are no longer just competing; many weekends, they're leading the box office conversions", said Bhuvanesh Mendiratta, managing director of Miraj Entertainment Ltd that operates multiplex theatres. Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR Pictures and chief of strategy at PVR Ltd, echoed that optimism: While in specific months, Hollywood has also outperformed Indian titles, audiences are experiencing a fatigue with streaming content at home which doesn't match theatrical quality.

Media merger: CBS owner Paramount to enter $8.4B deal with Skydance, after lawsuit settlement with Trump; new owners commit $20 mn to pro MAGA ads

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has officially approved the $8.4 billion merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media, clearing the final regulatory hurdle for a deal that had faced months of political and legal wrangling. The merger will hand over control of some of the biggest names in entertainment, CBS, Paramount Pictures, the Paramount+ streaming service, and cable networks like MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central, to independent studio Skydance, backed by billionaire David Ellison and investment firm RedBird Capital. 'We're going to celebrate now,' a source close to Skydance told The New York Post. 'We're all beat up. Just exhuasted, but it was well worth it. The next step is to close the deal early by Aug 7.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo The FCC's decision, passed by a 2-1 vote, came just weeks after Paramount paid $16 million to settle a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump over a 2020 '60 Minutes' interview with then-vice president Kamala Harris, which the president claimed was deceptively edited to sway the 2024 election. While CBS denied the allegation, it chose to settle to avoid any delays to the merger. Crucial to gaining FCC approval were assurances from Ellison, son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, and RedBird Capital that the new management would ensure unbiased journalism at CBS. The company has promised to appoint an independent ombudsman to oversee complaints related to editorial fairness and transparency, the New York Post reported. In a move seen as politically charged, Paramount also scrapped its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives to align with the Trump administration's stance, which argues such policies amount to discrimination. 'Americans no longer trust the legacy national news media to report fully, accurately, and fairly,' said FCC Chair Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee. "It is time for a change. That is why I welcome Skydance's commitment to make significant changes at the once storied CBS broadcast network." Dissenting FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez, the sole Democratic vote against the deal, condemned the decision, saying, 'After months of cowardly capitulation to this administration, Paramount finally got what it wanted.' As part of the deal, Shari Redstone, the controlling shareholder of Paramount Global, will receive $1.75 billion in cash and step down from the company's board. Her departure marks the end of the Redstone family's direct influence over the media empire her father, Sumner Redstone, built. Skydance, known for producing hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, will merge with Paramount to form 'Paramount Skydance Corp.' The newly formed company will remain publicly traded but under the control of the Ellison family. David Ellison will serve as chairman and CEO, while former NBCUniversal boss Jeff Shell will become president. The FCC also approved the transfer of 28 CBS-owned TV station licences to the new company. This came shortly after CBS abruptly cancelled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, citing financial reasons. The programme, despite strong ratings, was reportedly losing $40 million a year. Trump, who originally sued Paramount for $20 billion, claimed this week that the real settlement was closer to $36 million. The new owners committed $20 million to run pro-MAGA public service ads. The merger marks a dramatic turning point for Paramount, which has struggled in recent years with declining revenues and the challenges of streaming-era disruption. Redstone had initially reunited CBS and Viacom in 2019 in a bid to strengthen the company's competitive footing, but the rapidly changing media landscape proved difficult to navigate. With the deal now approved, all eyes will be on Ellison and Skydance as they take the reins of one of America's most iconic media brands.
