Split Fiction Is A Smash Hit By Every Metric And A Lesson To EA And Others

As I write this sentence, the latest co-op adventure game from Hazelight, Split Fiction, hasn't even been out for 48 hours. Yet based on player count numbers, Metacritic rankings, reviews, and player ratings, it is already one of EA's most successful and critically acclaimed games in years. And hopefully, EA and other publishers learn a thing or two from the co-op game's success.
After being revealed just 12 weeks ago at the Game Awards in December, Split Fiction launched on March 6 to rave reviews. Our own Kenneth Shepard found the game to be incredibly inventive and well-made, calling it a 'victory lap' from studio Hazelight which has been producing excellent co-op games for about a decade now. I've been playing it with my wife over the last few days and I have to agree. It's a truly incredible game that is packed with hundreds of cool moments and ideas. And it seems we aren't alone in loving Split Fiction because looking around at ever publicly available metric on hand, the game is a smash hit.
First, lets look at Metacritic, which is a useful if flawed metric of how well a game is doing overall with critics across multiple sites and outlets. The review aggregator has Split Fiction, as of March 7, sitting at 91 on PS5 and 92 on Xbox and PC. That's damn impressive, and it's enough to make it 2025's highest-rated game thus far. But it's also a big deal for publisher EA, as Split Fiction is EA's first video game to score a 90 or higher on Metacritic in 13 years. The last time that happened was in 2012 with Mass Effect 3.
Next, we can look at Steam and how many people are playing the game on Valve's popular PC storefront. According to the ever-reliable SteamDB, just a few hours after launch, Split Fiction had over 190,000 active concurrent players. Wowza! That means it was as popular as Steam giants like GTA V, Rust, and Marvel Rivals. That high number also set a record for EA. Split Fiction's peak player count of 197,000 is the second highest concurrent number EA has achieved on Steam. Only Apex Legends, a free-to-play battle royale shooter, has done better.
It should also be noted that unlike most other EA games, Split Fiction (like 2024's Dragon Age: The Veilguard) doesn't require you to install and use a separate EA launcher to play. This is further proof that ditching third party launchers is a smart move for any publisher.
EA and Hazelight are also probably really happy that Split Fiction is receiving positive reviews from players on Steam. The new co-op game currently has a 94 percent positive user rating on Steam. That makes it EA's fifth most well-reviewed Steam game, only slightly behind another Hazelight co-op banger, It Takes Two.
While we will have to wait and see how well Split Fiction sells, all the currently available data shows that this is a huge home run for EA. It's yet more evidence that smaller, more focused games (relative to stuff like GTA 6 and Starfield) can succeed and blow up in a big way. And you don't need to spend three years marketing a game for it to find success.
I also think that EA made a smart move when it decided to not lock Split Fiction behind some third-party launcher on PC. Instead, you buy the game on Steam and just play it. Simple, easy, and a much more appealing offer for the sometimes fickle PC playerbase. And let's not forget that Hazelight (an independent studio, but one which relies heavily on EA's money) being able to spend a decade now making smaller co-op games has allowed the team more time to learn and improve at their craft collectively, which means future games are likely to be better.
Now, will EA and other publishers watching learn a lesson from Split Fiction's success? Will they allow studios more chances to make smaller games and not burn millions on years of marketing or lay off people the moment something doesn't hit as big? Probably not. But it would be nice to see someone out there learn a lesson from Split Fiction's home run success.

Destiny 2 Yesterday, in both written and video form, I talked about a number of issues within Destiny 2 that are currently plaguing the game that simply make it feel…worse. It's a bit hard to quantify, but everything just feels off. Damage, cooldowns, and well, it turns out there's a reason for that. Both are bugged to one extent or another. Bungie just laid out what's going on in a series of tweets yesterday, both what's being looked at and what specific fixes are coming in some instances. There are many bugs, audio bugs on PS5, sprint bugs, but the main two have to do with damage and cooldowns. We'll start with cooldowns, as these have felt the weirdest to me so far. As it turns out, you need to invest more stats in them than previously stated by Bungie to get them back to pre-Edge of Fate levels. Here's Bungie: 'We had previously stated that hitting 70 in an ability stat in the Edge of Fate was equivalent to pre-Edge of Fate values (for Discipline, Strength, each class's ability regen stat, and Intellect), and that going above 70 stat would result in faster recharging than before. This isn't currently true for the 70 stat mark but the 85 stat mark, and we intend to make it true for 70 stat in an upcoming patch.' 'Our design goal for the Edge of Fate stats is to let players be able to reach higher heights than previously possible in the game by investing heavier into specific stats, but also have interesting tradeoffs when making build crafting choices. Making 70 stat one of the big tradeoff points is important for our design goals and for meeting player expectations for buildcrafting in the Edge of Fate.' Destiny 2 What this means is that the original plan was to make hitting 70 stats the equivalent of the cooldowns you'd have at 100 stats pre-Edge of Fate, making going over that a bonus as you hit 100 in this era. However, the actual stats required is 85, meaning you'd need an extra 60 stats across super, class ability, grenade and melee to hit this mark. The reason this is being lowered is because now Bungie wants you to invest points into going well over 100, so getting up to good-feeling levels on some of those cooldowns is harder than you'd think, despite the drop to 70. Another issue that I don't really see addressed here is that if you're under these marks, scaling goes way down for some of these. So the point is, if things feel especially bad, this is why. Then, damage. This was a big topic during the raid race where players ran into extremely tough enemies in contest mode of the raid, especially the bosses which seemed to have dramatically more health than any other version of a race like this, making infamous 'loadout swaps' essentially mandatory for completion, something Bungie previously said they did not encourage. The 'answer' for what happened here is a bit more confusing: 'Power Deltas for the Contest Raid difficulty. We're seeing reports of enemies being at a higher delta than what the activity advertises - ex: enemies have a skull icon next to them instead of a sword. We will investigate.' 'Each Raid we've shipped has been unique, especially at Contest difficulty. This will continue - and for our players who desire challenge, do not worry. We will continue to offer it. That said, we will use feedback from this weekend to inform our future as we continue to develop these experiences.' Destiny 2 This explanation is weird because they're admitting that enemies were too high at 'skull' difficulty, apparently by accident. But they also seem to suggest that they made bosses this hard on purpose. But if rank and file enemies are scaled too high, why would their accompanying bosses not be accidentally scaled too high as well? This also does not address similar issues going on in raid and dungeon content besides Desert Perpetual. Players are loading into these old activities and finding bosses they used to 1 or 2 phase now taking 4, 5, 6 phases to kill using the exact same builds as before. It doesn't make any sense, cannot be on purpose, and it is not addressed here by Bungie. It's all messed up. Some fixes are coming soon, some are coming later, but if you want the game to feel closer to how it used to before this launch, you might want to just wait a bit until the dust settles. Devs are biting their nails over a new Steam rule that prohibits—in painfully vague terms—certain kinds of content on its platform. The new rule (seemingly introduced incredibly recently, and definitely introduced since the Wayback Machine's last Steam rules snapshot from April 14 this year) forbids "Content that may violate the rules and standards set forth by Steam's payment processors and related card networks and banks, or internet network providers." In other words: keep Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal happy or sling your hook. How do you do that? Valve doesn't say, only noting that particular care should be taken with "certain kinds of adult only content." No elaboration is offered as to what kinds of adult-only content that means, leaving NSFW devs groping in the dark to appease payments processors. I've reached out to Valve to ask for clarification on this rule, and I'll update this piece if I hear back. But while we wait, maybe we can connect some dots. As spotted by SteamDB on Bluesky, the new rule coincided with the sudden removal of a significant number of incest-themed adult games from Steam's storefront. Anyone who had any number of the Interactive Sex or Sex Adventures games on their wishlist should have bought them sooner: they've been suddenly and unceremoniously yoinked. I've reached out to the dev behind some of those games, too, to ask if they've had any communication from Valve, and I'll update if I hear back. Image 1 of 2 Image 2 of 2 It would seem, then, that incest might be one of the themes that falls under Valve's (or, more accurately, Valve's payments processors') new rubric of verboten games, but there's a wrinkle here too. There are still some incest-themed games available for purchase on the platform, including one from the same Interactive Sex series that was hit so hard in the removals noted by SteamDB. Could it be they just slipped some sort of automated removal net? Or was the disappearance of so many games with the same, um, theme just a coincidence? Without clarification from Valve that goes beyond the couple of sentences that have been chucked into its Steamworks onboarding docs, it's tough to say. What's less hard to parse is the very real fear this has struck into the hearts of Steam users and devs both. Fears abound that Steam is in for the kind of turmoil that struck OnlyFans all the way back in 2021, when the site—almost exclusively associated in people's minds with the sex workers who use it to make a living—said that pressure from banks was forcing it to ban pornography on the platform. The policy was eventually walked back after an outcry, but it was just one more thing that makes trying to make a living from sex work uniquely precarious in the age of online payments and platform-dependency. It's not just OnlyFans that has come under the eye of Sauron for this kind of stuff, either. Tumblr, infamously, banned porn on the platform, with CEO Matt Mullenwegg bluntly stating that "Credit card companies are anti-porn." Patreon, too, has initiated crackdowns on certain kinds of NSFW content at the behest of payments processors. Processor hostility to adult content has heightened in the wake of the 2020 scandal where popular adult site PornHub was found to be hosting revenge porn and content featuring minors. That led Mastercard and Visa to terminate service to the site—a termination that continued even after PornHub went nuclear on videos from unverified performers. Credit card companies categorically do not want their names associated with that kind of reputation-damaging content, to say nothing of the increased risk of chargebacks and fraud that comes from online pornography. Meanwhile, Valve categorically does not want Steam users to suddenly find themselves unable to buy games using ubiquitous payment methods like Visa, Mastercard, or PayPal, meaning it's a lot easier to simply bow to their whims than stick up for adult game devs. The fact that Valve doesn't feature live performers in the adult games on its platform—it's hentai as far as the eye can see—apparently bears little relevance here. We might not miss the glut of incest-themed games that have seemingly (but I stress it's not been confirmed) been hit by this rule, but I fear it's the thin end of a very thick wedge. On the one hand—as much as I enjoy poking fun at the more obsessively goonerlicious games that mark our hobby—it's my position that what other people get off to is none of my business, the usual caveats about everyone involved giving informed consent applied. On another, darker hand, there's a not-unreasonable fear that what begins as a crackdown on porno shovelware could eventually spread out to target queer creators and games of all stripes. "It's the quiet normalization of financial censorship and it's going to hurt LGBTQ+ games and devs," writes NoahFuel_Gaming in a popular Bluesky post. "Banks like Visa and Mastercard are now backdoor moral authorities. They already pressured Patreon, OnlyFans, and others to remove NSFW content. Now Steam is next. And guess who they'll target first? Queer, transgressive, or 'unusual' games. "Queer content gets flagged as 'explicit' even when it's PG. A trans dev making a personal story? 'Too controversial.' A surreal queer VN? 'Sexualized.' Financial deplatforming in action." Peak wasn't on anybody's radar at the start of this year, and that includes the people who made it. While it was originally pitched back in 2024, most of it was made in a four-week-long crunch session back in February. Months later, the ruthless climbing sim for friends is one of Steam's biggest surprise hits of 2025. Player reviews are full of examples that help explain why. 'Told my friends with panic in my voice that the lava is rising even though it wasn't, one friend panicked and died because of it,' read's one Steam review. '10/10 game.' It was a project born 'mostly from jealousy,'Aggro Crab studio head Nick Kaman told PC Gamer last month. 'At the time we were on the precipice of launching our biggest game ever, Another Crab's Treasure—an intense 3+ year-long project that burnt a lot of us out. While it was a success, Content Warning was a much bigger one made in MUCH less time,' he added. So the team decided to partner with some of the 2024 co-op horror playground game's developers on something similar, but with the disarmingly twee quirkiness that Aggro Crab is known for. tiktok-7519324468150291742 The result is Peak, a first-person hiking adventure in which players control lo-fi, child-like avatars as they help one another traverse through hazardous terrain like steep cliffs and scorching lava pits. The game is cheap, just $8 to download, exploits social dynamics for drama and comedy in otherwise familiar gameplay scenarios, and is catnip for social media. TikTok and Instagram are full of perfectly meme-able moments that usually entail one player accidentally falling to their doom as their proximity chat screams gradually fade away. It's already sold over 5 million copies in its first month. Currently only available on PC, the Steam reviews are surprisingly glowing for a quick-turnaround crew-like with such a massive player base. It's retained its 'mostly positive' rating over 40,000 user reviews later. Like so many indie games that blow up on Steam, iterating on current fads often trumps dream projects years in the making, at least when it comes to grabbing that bag, though it no doubt helps that Peak is also a lot of fun.
