Nolusindiso Booi will lead the Springbok Women in her 51st cap when they take on second-ranked Canada on Saturday in Pretoria in one of their toughest World Cup preparation matches to date.
The Bok Women selected a core of experienced players for the first of two Tests as they look to up the intensity ahead of the tournament starting next month in England.
Only five players in the starting XV have less than 20 caps, but they are all in the double figures as performance coach Swys de Bruin and his assistants look to lay a strong marker at Loftus Versfeld (1.30 pm kick-off).

Eight players have experience against Canada, with scrumhalf Tayla Kinsey, tighthead prop Babalwa Latsha, Booi, winger Jakkie Cilliers, flyhalf Libbie Janse van Rensburg, No 8 Aseza Hele, lock Danelle Lochner and loosehead Sanelisiwe Charlie. Outside centre Zinthle Mphupa, the team's leading try scorer, and hooker Micke Gunter will start for the team for the first time this year.
'Canada is not only ranked second in the world, but they are also full of confidence after an undefeated run in the recent Pacific Four tournament,' De Bruin said with his team announcement.
'We need matches like these tough ones as we get our final plans in place ahead of the Rugby World Cup. It is all good to train well and we did so over a number of months, but now we need to test our systems and plans against Canada, who are one of the favourites to win the World Cup.'
Catha Jacobs is well-aware of Canada's threats across the park, but she insists the #BokWomen are ready to bring some fire to the Test on Saturday - more here: https://t.co/5HDzGVkMv1 🔥#MakeItCount #ETTIG pic.twitter.com/forbb32Gjx — SA Women's Rugby (@WomenBoks) July 1, 2025
However, De Bruin feels the experience they were able to select will stand the team in good stead. He's selected one of the most experienced Springbok Women's sides with 17 players in the match-day squad who have World Cup experience after playing in New Zealand.
'They will be aware of the pressure Canada put on their opponents and how well they have played in recent seasons. We are looking inward, though, for this match, and our focus will be on executing our way of play.
They know it won't be easy, but Jakkie Cilliers said the #BokWomen are intent on giving it a full go when they face Canada in Pretoria on Saturday - more here: https://t.co/3XI0u00IbH 👊#MakeItCount #ETTIG pic.twitter.com/taZ6Qe5Wyd — SA Women's Rugby (@WomenBoks) June 30, 2025

Second Springboks Test on SABC as Mzansi cries out for more Bok rugby

The second Springboks vs Italy Test will be broadcast on SABC, allowing more South Africans to witness international rugby live, which is not the norm. Picture: BackpagePix Occasionally though, SuperSport SA Rugby ( Saru ) and the SABC broker deals to have Springbok matches televised on the national broadcaster. That excludes the majority of the SA public from watching the Springboks play live. It's no secret that Springbok rugby in South Africa can typically only be viewed on paid-TV broadcaster SuperSport. The news on Thursday that the second Test between the Springboks and Italy on July 12 will be televised live on the national broadcaster is excellent for the SA public. The Unifying Power of the 1995 Rugby World Cup Saru president Mark Alexander cited the example of the 1995 Rugby World Cup as a great way to unify the country, as the 30th anniversary of the victory in the final was celebrated late last month. 'The 1995 triumph was a moment that captured the attention of the world – revealing unmatched power of sport to bring people together, to heal deep wounds and to inspire a country that was still finding its feet as a young democracy,' said Alexander. 'As Saru, we are working closely with our broadcasters to ensure that all South Africans can be part of this historic occasion.' SA Minister of Sports Gayton McKenzie has said it was his aim to get more Springbok games shown on SABC, but that seems to still be a work in progress. Nomsa Chabeli, the SABC's Group CEO, said: 'The public broadcaster extends its appreciation to SARU and SuperSport for the spirit in which negotiations took place, to enable us to broadcast this historic match. 'It is important that the SABC is not left out of key national sporting events, which bring the nation together, and rugby has been very instrumental in doing that. 'This agreement also highlights the reach that the public broadcaster has in universal access to the nation through its TV and radio platforms, as millions of South Africans will have an opportunity to witness this historic moment. 'We call upon all South Africans to tune in, as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of our Rugby World Cup win in 1995.' @Michael_Sherman IOL Sport

All eyes on Damian Willemse after last wearing Springboks' jersey during 2023 victory parade

FILE - The last time Damian Willemse was seen in a Springboks jersey was during the trophy parade for winning the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. Image: PHILL MAGAKOE / AFP The last time South Africans saw Damian Willemse in a Springbok jersey was during the early part of the 2023 Rugby World Cup victory parade through the streets of South Africa. Nobody could get Willemse out of the kit he wore with much distinction during that World Cup-final win over the All Blacks. It was probably only after the stench of the kit got to the players on the bus that it decided he needed a fresh outfit. Unfortunately, Willemse hasn't worn the Springboks jersey since sustaining a couple of injuries that kept him out of the entire 2024 international season. The jersey he cherishes so much was taken away from him. A lot has changed since Damian Willemse last wore the No 15 jersey, as the Sharks' Aphelele Fassi having a breakout 2024 to put him top of the list as far as the fullback berth is concerned. Veteran Willie le Roux is also still going strong and is on the cusp of his 100th Test in the green and gold. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Fassi made eight starts at fullback in Willemse's absence in 2024 after seemingly leapfrogging Le Roux as the Boks first-choice No 15. 'The Weekend Special' - a nickname Fassi earned because his surname is similar to South Africa's music legend Brenda Fassie - played in most of the big matches for the Boks. He faced the All Blacks in Johannesburg, Argentina in the Rugby Championship decider in Mbombela and featured in the big November Test against England at Twickenham. Fassi also started in the season opener against the Barbarians as Willemse was still serving a suspension for a dangerous tackle while playing for the Stormers in a United Rugby Championship match. But this weekend, against Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, Willemse will finally feature again in a Bok jersey after almost 20 months. Willemse certainly knows he is going to be in the spotlight after Fassi's bright performances. But the Strand-born player is keen to make up for lost time. 'I'm looking forward to it, very excited. Lots of nerves as well, it's my first Test match in a couple of years since the World Cup final,' Willemse told SuperSport TV this week ahead of the Italy clash. 'A lot has changed, especially at the international level. The rest of the boys who have played in the position have done an excellent job. They have set the standard. 'For me, coming in, I know there will be a lot of eyes on me. But I'm just focussed on my primary job. Hopefully I can have a good game.' Fassi has proven to be a lethal counter-attacking player in the new era of the Boks' offensive play. He cut the line beautifully last season, while he showed off his attacking kicks in the wet against the BaaBaas. But Willemse will also welcome the Boks' new style of play as a lethal runner from the back himself. The Stormers man has wonderful anticipation and can also slip in flyhalf to distribute when needed.

Springboks Siya Kolisi's saga worse than expected!

Springboks fans will be waiting anxiously regarding the injury news of captain Siya Kolisi, who will miss Saturday's clash against Italy after sustaining an Achilles injury. The double World Cup winner missed the Barbarian's game at the end of June but was expected to make a return for this weekend; however, the injury is reportedly worse than expected. 'He had a stiff neck, which has cleared up, but now he's got a bit of Achilles stiffness. It's not serious – the scans are clear – but we're just being careful. No player will play more than eight or nine matches this year, so we'd rather be safe,' said Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus. It's yet to be confirmed whether Kolisi will feature this month, but it wouldn't be over presumptions to assume that he will be rested in order to be fit and ready for the highly-anticipated Rugby Championship. After all, the Springbok coach is adamant that no player will feature more than nine teams in 2025. 15 Damian Willemse, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Jesse Kriel (c), 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Morne van den Berg, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Ox Nche. Bench: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Jan-Hendrik Wessels, 18 Vincent Koch, 19 RG Snyman, 20 Franco Mostert, 21 Kwagga Smith, 22 Faf de Klerk, 23 Willie le Roux. Rassie Erasmus is inundated with world-class talent, leaving several key players, deserving of the international stage, out of the squad, including Stormers star Evan Roos. 'At this stage he's [Roos] just competing with the best. We all have different opinions on who plays well and who doesn't. In our opinion, he wasn't playing as well as the other guys and that's normally the reason we don't select guys,' Erasmus admitted. 'At this stage, Juarno [Augustus; failed to pass an exit medical at Northhampton Saints ahead of his move to Ulster] and Cameron [Hanekom] are out. Evan was not playing as well as the other guys. That's not to say he isn't Springbok level, it's just that Kwagga Smith, Cameron, Juarno, and Siya [Kolisi] can all play eight.' 'A guy can be good enough, but there are just two or three guys who we think fit better into what we are trying to do as a Springbok team. Maybe he just doesn't fit that plan or the other guys are a bit more settled,' the Springbok coach concluded. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
