
Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology researchers gear up to study seeds that were sent to space
Post-flight studies will be conducted in collaboration with the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), which released the seeds for the project, according to IIST sources.
Seeds of Jyothi and Uma rice varieties, Kanakamani (horse gram), Vellayani Vijay (tomato), Thilakathara (sesame) and Soorya (brinjal/eggplant) were sent to the ISS under the 'Crop Seeds on ISS', a project spearheaded by the IIST's Space Biology Lab.
The IIST officials said they expected the seeds to reach Thiruvananthapuram within a few days.
The biology payload consisted of dry seeds that were packed and exposed to microgravity conditions on the ISS and returned to earth. Back on earth, the space-returned samples will be grown to assess the unique effects of microgravity on growth and yield parameters and how it will be manifested in growth.
Comparative studies will be carried out using three sets of samples under different conditions.
The 'Crop Seeds on ISS' project was the result of multi-level memorandums of understanding between the ISRO and the European Space Agency, the ISRO's Human Spaceflight Centre (HSFC) and the IIST, and the IIST and the KAU.
IIST Vice- Chancellor Dipankar Banerjee and HSFC Director D.K. Singh had inked an MoU in this regard in May. K.G. Sreejalakshmi, Professor, IIST, is the Principal Investigator of the project.

Over 22 satellite missions launched since 2020: Dr Jitendra
New Delhi, July 24(UNI) Since the announcement of space sector reforms in 2020, India has significantly expanded its capabilities and engagement in space technology, launching a series of satellites, Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh told the Rajya Sabha today. The satellites launched by India included GSAT-30, EOS-01, CMS-01, Aditya-L1, Chandrayaan-3, XPoSat, and most recently, EOS-09, the minister said in a written reply in the Upper House of parliament. EOS-09 was launched on May 18 to provide reliable remote sensing data. Among the notable scientific missions, Aditya-L1, launched in September 2023, is dedicated to solar studies, while XPoSat (January 2024) marks India's entry into space-based X-ray polarimetry. Chandrayaan-3, launched in July 2023, successfully demonstrated safe lunar landing and rover operations, said the minister. At the same time, over 300 private space start-ups have been registered. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has facilitated significant private participation, including two successful sub-orbital flights in November 2022 and May 2024, said the minister. A total of 658 proposals have been submitted by more than 380 Non-Governmental Entities (NGEs) across multiple domains such as developmental and disaster mitigation, agriculture & food security, insurance & yield estimation. A semi-physical yield model developed by ISRO for rice and wheat is being implemented under PMFBY for quicker claim settlements in nine states, said the Minister. He also said that satellite imagery supports hazard assessment and damage analysis for floods, cyclones, landslides, earthquakes, and forest fires while in 2024, flood mapping was conducted for 16 states. ISRO also supports early warning systems for Godavari and Tapi rivers. As part of the revised Gaganyaan Programme, approved on October 9, 2024, India is set to pursue a second human spaceflight (H2) following the successful execution of its first crewed mission (H1). The second mission will continue collaborations with existing national and international partners, laying the groundwork for the proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), said the minister. Indian Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Captures A Slice Of The Cosmos From His Bengaluru Home
Last Updated: Shukla, who returned from space earlier this year, continues to share his love for astronomy through striking night sky photographs shot from his rooftop. Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, the only Indian aboard the Axiom 4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS), has shared detailed images of the Orion Nebula taken from the rooftop of his home in Bengaluru. Shukla, who returned from the International Space Station with commander Peggy Whitson and mission specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski (Poland) and Tibor Kapu (Hungary), posted close-up photos on his X account. The images feature the Orion Nebula in sharp detail, with the Horsehead Nebula clearly visible at its center. Shukla, who is undergoing post-mission medical checks and recovery, took up astrophotography after returning from training at Star City, Russia. He shared that aboard the ISS, he frequently spent time in the Cupola, which is the station's panoramic viewing module, and capturing Earth and celestial views. In the X post, he wrote, 'I started into astrophotography upon returning to India after my first leg of training at GCTC, Russia. The pictures in sequence are of the same interstellar object M42 (M stands for Messier- Name of the catalogue that maintains all night sky objects) also known as the Orion Nebula. Over time we got better that is evident from the last photo. All the pictures were clicked from the night sky of Bengaluru. Slow or fast, if you keep moving progress is guaranteed". After completing the mission, Shukla spoke of how impossible it is to see any borders from space. During a live video interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, 'After seeing Earth from outside, the first thought that came to mind was that Earth looks completely one; no border is visible from outside…We all are part of humanity, and the Earth is our one home". On his exchange with PM Modi aboard the ISS, Shukla said, 'The sky has never been the limit. Not for me, not for India." He added that India's flag now flies aboard the space station for the first time in history. According to a report by Moneycontrol, Shubhanshu Shukla's mission research highlights included seven experiments led by Shukla, including stem‑cell studies aimed at preventing muscle loss in microgravity, work that has potential terrestrial applications for ageing populations. He described absorbing these lessons 'like a sponge" and expressed confidence they would prove 'highly valuable" for India's Gaganyaan programme During that same exchange, Shukla described India as 'truly grand" from space, saying it appears 'bigger than it does on the map." ISRO-NASA NISAR mission: 5 things to know about the costliest Earth observation satellite
NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR), an Earth observation satellite, is scheduled to liftoff at 5:40 PM on July 30 from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. Designed to provide high-resolution data of our planet's surface, like land and ice, the satellite will showcase how Earth's topography changes over time and help understand natural disasters like landslides and earthquakes. Jointly developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the satellite will be launched on the GSLV-F16 vehicle and has a price tag of $1.5 billion, making it the most expensive Earth observation satellite to date. Ahead of NISAR's launch, here are five things you need to know about the satellite. The two synthetic aperture radars, also called SARs, that will be aboard NISAR are designed to detect changes to Earth's surface down to fractions of an inch. NASA says that the satellite can see through clouds and light rain during both day and nighttime, enabling scientists to continuously monitor natural disasters like earthquakes and landslides. NISAR will also give scientists an 'unprecedented coverage of Antarctica' with information about how ice sheets change over time. Since NISAR will be able to sense minute changes to the Earth's surface, it will help governments to monitor and prepare for human and natural disasters. Talking of earthquakes, NASA says the satellite will help us identify which parts of a fault could slip or cause earthquakes. As for human-made structures like levees, aqueducts and dams, the data collected by NISAR over time can help detect if the land nearby is weakening key structures in the area and damaging their integrity. The satellite's main body has a dual radar payload that consists of an L-band system and an S-band system, with both being sensitive to land and ice surfaces of different sizes. These radar systems can also measure attributes like moisture content, surface roughness, and motion. Every 24 hours, NISAR will be generating roughly 80 terabytes of data. This information will be stored on the cloud and accessible to all. The satellite's two radar systems will monitor Earth's land and ice surfaces twice every 12 days. NISAR will also cover surfaces that haven't been previously covered by any other observational satellites. While the L-band is capable of penetrating deep forest canopies and offering insights into its structure, the S-band is ideal for monitoring crops. The data from these two radars will help researchers understand how forests, wetlands, permafrost and agricultural areas change over time. Developed by engineers at ISRO and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the S-band was built at ISRO's Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad, while the L-band was built at a NASA facility in Southern California. These components were then integrated and installed on a modified ISRO I3K spacecraft bus, and the satellite was then transported to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre earlier this year in May. Since then, the satellite's launch has been delayed several times, with the last launch date pushed back after technical issues with the unfurlable antennae.
