
CEO of World's Busiest Airport Shares Eye-Opening Take on Future of Travel
The chief executive managing the world's busiest airport is on a mission to eliminate the friction of air travel and redefine what an airport can be.
Speaking during Newsweek's inaugural New Destinations Travel & Tourism Summit on July 3 and in a separate interview with Newsweek, Paul Griffiths, the CEO of Dubai Airports, laid out a sweeping vision for the future of airports among other experts in the travel industry.
Dubai Airports is the authority that owns and operates airports in the city, including Dubai International Airport (DXB); it has ranked as the world's busiest airport for international passenger traffic since 2014.
Opening the discussion floor at the event, Amit Shah, executive vice president of Newsweek International, said that the story of travel is "changing faster than ever." He added that "travelers want deeper, more authentic experiences; destinations want to stay unique and protected; and the industry must balance growth with genuine care."
Griffiths said that "people don't have the vision that an airport should be a place of hospitality … a place of welcome." He added that, "when people come to a country, the first experience they get is the airport experience. When they leave, it's the last impression they have."
Dubai International Airport is coming off a record year. In 2024, it welcomed 92.3 million guests, surpassing its previous high of 89.1 million in 2018. Over the last decade, DXB has served more than 700 million passengers on over 3.3 million flights.
The airport authority is looking to build an even-bigger hub with the expansion of Dubai's Al Maktoum International Airport; "when ultimately completed, [it] will be 260 million passenger capacity—by far the largest, more than double anything that exists at the moment," Griffiths said at the event.

'Reimagining the Airport Experience'
Griffiths said "reimagining the airport experience, it shouldn't be a hard thing," and he is determined not to replicate outdated models.
"The worst nightmare is, if we're doubling the size of check-in, we're doubling the queues, we're doubling the walking distances," Griffiths said. "We don't want to build ever-bigger things; we want to build faster things with much-better processing times."
Instead, Griffiths outlined a plan to decentralize operations into "something like eight smaller airports" linked by high-speed rail. The aim is to create a seamless connection from city to gate, with integrated logistics that minimize the distance between travelers and their aircraft. "You can book into a railway station and then transition seamlessly from your plane onto the train with a few steps," Griffiths said.

Scrapping the Outdated Check-in System
Asked whether he is planning to scrap the traditional check-in experience at Dubai International, Griffiths said at the event: "Utterly and totally."
This transformation hinges on the abandonment of legacy systems. Griffiths was especially critical of current baggage procedures. "Why do you have to go to the airport and actually stand in line and then drop your bag off?" he asked. "Why, in the 21st century, are we sticking paper labels on suitcases?"
Griffiths described the process as "just so ridiculous," adding "every luggage manufacturer could print a unique barcode on a suitcase, which could be read by the airport systems and there you can track wherever it is in the world on whichever airline."
Griffiths repeatedly returned to a central premise—the airport experience must be frictionless. He told Newsweek: "What we're trying to do is combine one biometric signature that happens when you walk into the airport—you won't even see the cameras, you won't know it's happening—that does check-in, seat allocation, baggage registration, security and immigration—all done."
Such an approach could render many traditional steps obsolete. "If you ever go to a car showroom and buy a car, and they give you the car, and they say, 'By the way, see those four wheels; you're gonna have to bolt them onto the car yourself'—I mean that doesn't happen," Griffiths said. "We have to rethink and go back to basics."
Maximizing Efficiency With AI
Dubai Airports is already experimenting with technologies to improve operations, including AI-powered video analytics during aircraft turnarounds. Griffiths said: "If, for example, the catering truck arrives, and it stays there for too long … you can analyze how far behind the optimal time they are, then you can have a look at how you might be able to improve that," he added. "It's a very interesting journey; we'll learn a lot from it."
Griffiths said: "I think the technology exists to do virtually anything in the world; we're just reaching the limits of human ingenuity in sectors that really do need to change, and I think that's going be the case in the aviation industry, thinking of different ways of doing things."
And it is not just the check-in process that needs change. Griffiths added that AI also has potential to revolutionize airport security and baggage screening. "Now, AI is so clever. I'm sure AI could analyze the imaging and give a far-higher level of accuracy … so, why don't we make that whole process far less intrusive, far more accurate and far quicker and far safer?" he asked.

Stopping Traffic for 'Missile Break' and Other Challenges
The executive said that one of the biggest challenges in managing DXB is the sheer scale of the operation. "If anything goes wrong at my airports, you've got 200 people a minute wanting to know what's gone wrong very quickly," Griffiths said. While Dubai Airports employed 3,550 people in 2007, it now serves 96 million passengers with a staff of just 17,000.
Even amid regional tensions—such as the recent U.S. missile strikes on Iran—Griffiths said the team maintained smooth operations.
Griffiths said at the event: "I've never had a phone call [where someone asked], 'Oh, would you stop all the planes for about 60 minutes while we have a missile break?' I mean that's never happened before, but we literally got that call" saying, "there's gonna be a few things not under normal air traffic control that will be passing through your airspace."
"We rerouted all of our Western traffic across the southern part of Saudi Arabia … and through Oman to avoid the problem on the northern side," Griffiths later told Newsweek. "We got around it by just using operational contingencies."
Griffiths emphasized that successful airports must understand their role beyond logistics.
Sometimes, he added, hospitality means personalization. "I had someone who said, 'Could I get someone to stamp my passport because I first arrived in Dubai in 1965 and would like to have another stamp saying my next arrival time is 60 years later?' and we arranged that," Griffiths said.
Dubai's baggage system, the largest in the world, stretches 140 kilometers, or 87 miles—nearly the distance between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Griffiths said. "Our lost-bag rate is seven times better than the world average," he added. "The world average, when you travel, your luggage has about seven bags out of every 1,000 misrouted, and ours is less than one every 1,000 bags."
Griffiths said he believes most airports fail at their core mission. "They're misunderstanding the fact that they need to be there to reassure travelers … every single customer needs to be treated as an individual," he added. "I'm trying my best to educate architects on what makes a good airport … some of them are listening, which is great."

Lili said her mother, who still lives in Montreal along with the rest of her family, is known for sending her back to Toronto with bags of home-cooked food. She's also the first of her siblings to move out of the family home. "[She] is a silly, goofy Vietnamese mom," Lili told Newsweek. "Since I only had a carry on, she had to limit herself." Vietnamese gà luộc is actually a smart choice for travel food. The traditional dish doesn't contain any perishable sauces or high-risk ingredients that spoil quickly at room temperature. And contrary to what other passengers might think, gà luộc doesn't give off a strong smell either, especially when wrapped well. Lili's clip has been viewed 2 million times and sparked over a thousand comments from many users who understood the gesture. "Asian parents really do show their love in their own special way," one user laughed. "In my culture, when someone visits you from far away and they leave, it's customary to pack them a boiled chicken and rice, so this is very understandable," another wrote. "You never know how hungry you can get in an hour. Food is Asian parents' love language," a third commenter added. It's true. In many Vietnamese households, gà luộc is commonly packed for road trips, train rides or given to children traveling back to university or work. Lili, who goes by @softpastrybun on Instagram, told Newsweek that no other passengers said anything, but her bag did catch the attention of airport security. "My bag did get flagged, but he asked if I had chicken and laughed before saying it was fine and I was free to go," she said. While the clip struck a chord with many, not all feedback was focused on the poultry. "[The reaction has] been hilarious," Lili said. "Everyone is either relating or just laughing along. I did get some criticism on my hair though, lol."

Gen Z Are Living in Fear of Layoffs

A growing number of Gen Z Americans are worried about losing their jobs in the event of an economic downturn—despite signs the broader labor market remains stable. A new report from Allianz Life shows that 64 percent of Gen Z workers fear they could be laid off in the next year, up from 55 percent just a few months ago and significantly higher than the 45 percent of millennials and 41 percent of Gen Xers who share the same concern. The findings show a growing generational divide in workplace confidence, and these fears are not necessarily unfounded. Along with the headline-grabbing job culls in the federal government which began earlier this year, a throng of companies have already laid off workers so far in 2025, including Microsoft, UPS, Dell, BP and others. What's more, a July 2 report by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas found that job cuts have soared to their highest midyear total since the COVID-19 pandemic. "It can definitely lead to you feeling expendable," David Rice, a HR expert at People Managing People, told Newsweek. "You don't feel you have influence at that stage of your career and the idea of freelancing or contract work probably feels like the Wild West to many of them." Perception Vs. Data Despite the rising concern, labor market indicators have shown relative strength in recent months. The unemployment rate remains low and overall layoffs have stayed low, according to the most recent Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). Job growth has also increased, with U.S. employers posting 7.8 million vacancies in May, the Labor Department reported Tuesday, up from 7.4 million in April Rice said perception matters just as much as data. "They've not weathered many storms like this," he said of Gen Z workers. "Many of them still have very raw skill profiles, and all this is happening at a time when entry-level jobs are said to be in flux." Columbia Business School professor Rita McGrath said that Gen Z's uncertainties around layoffs are still well-founded, given that their positions at work can often be precarious. "If you're young, it's often kind of last hired, first fired, and if companies aren't hiring and if they are trying to lay people off, they might be cutting their youngest, least-experienced workers who aren't yet providing a lot of value to their companies," she told Newsweek. Sectors like tech, retail, media and government have seen notable job losses in the past year, and younger workers are often overrepresented in these areas. "Tech has seen one of the biggest booms in layoffs," Rice said. "Is it a coincidence that it's the sector developing AI and starting to think it needs less people? No, I don't think it is." Jason Leverant, president and COO at staffing firm AtWork Group, agrees that younger workers are being disproportionately affected by news from the tech world. "This is likely shaping the fear and uncertainty that we're seeing from Gen Z," he told Newsweek, adding that it could be a "great catalyst" for young professionals to look at other industries where their skills might be better utilized. Still, Rice warned that it's not just tech. "Media has been laying people off en masse for 20 years... and the mass layoffs in government has created a ton of uncertainty." Financial Pressures Economic anxiety isn't happening in a vacuum. Younger workers are entering the job market under a mountain of student debt and facing high costs, particularly in cities. "Student debt is astronomical," Rice said. "The average graduate finishes school with around $77,000 in debt... Rent is out of control in most major cities. This generation doesn't have assets because they simply can't afford the price." He added that housing costs have outpaced income growth by a wide margin: "Since 1985, the average price of a house has increased 408 percent, but median household income has only increased 241 percent," which further demonstrates the financial pressures on workers. In cities like New York, even a seemingly solid salary may not go far. "If you've landed a job in the NYC metro area as a young person making $80,000 a year... your CEO has ordered everyone back to the office in a metro area where a studio apartment costs $3,200 a month," he continued. "Does an economic downturn sound threatening to your ability to sustain yourself? Of course it does." AI Anxiety Emerging technologies are also contributing to Gen Z's fears, with the rise of artificial intelligence being one of the most profound changes to how we live and work in recent memory. In a recent World Economic Forum survey, 41 percent of global companies said they expect to reduce their workforce in the next five years due to AI. "Is it a coincidence that tech is laying people off and building AI tools at the same time? I don't think so," said Rice. "It creates this feeling that you're training yourself for a job that might not even exist by the time you're good at it." Rice argued that the impact of AI is especially acute for workers in creative, administrative, and technical support roles—jobs that were once considered safe entry points but are now at the center of the AI frontier. "A lot of early-career roles are being reimagined or eliminated entirely. That makes it harder for young workers to even get a foot in the door," he said. Still, AI may not necessarily be an imminent job killer. Leverant believes the anxiety surrounding AI is certainly worthwhile, but perhaps premature. "AI is a tremendous efficiency-gaining tool, and not really able to truly take jobs away... yet," he said. "There are many, many jobs that exist in the economy today that require human hands to get the work done." Still, the pace of change is disorienting, especially for workers still trying to build up their skill set. The uncertainty around where AI is headed—and how fast—adds a psychological burden to an already complex job market. "Right now, we don't have clear pathways for adapting to AI disruption," Rice said. "There's no universal AI literacy program, no standard upskilling route. It's just constant headlines and speculation, and that's enough to make anyone anxious—especially if you're just starting out."

In May, investigative campaigning organization Global Witness told Newsweek it examined the platform's algorithm and how it recommended political content. The group said TikTok directed new, politically balanced users disproportionately to "hard-right content over and above all other content" ahead of elections in Romania, Poland and Germany. "It raises the question, why is TikTok's algorithm so into the hard right?" Global Witness campaign strategy lead Ava Lee said.
