Metro increases service, offers fare-free rides for July 4
To celebrate America's 249th birthday, Metro will be ramping up its services, and fares will be free on the evening of July 4.
The fare-free trips on , Metrobus and MetroAccess will start at 5 p.m. and go until close, according to a news release from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Meanwhile, Metro will increase service to rush hour levels on all trains in the afternoon to help people get to their Independence Day celebrations.
'What better way to celebrate America's birthday than with free fares on America's Metro System,' said Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke. 'We are proud to serve residents, families from across the United States, and global guests visiting the National Capital Region.'

If you're taking Metrorail to festivities on the National Mall, WMATA encourages travelers to avoid using multiple lines or transfers in order to reduce crowding.
Riders should also consider using a station other than Smithsonian, which may become crowded, WMATA noted. The following stations are within short walking distance of Smithsonian:To ring in the celebration, WMATA is also debuting its special July 4-themed buses and trains Monday, decked out in fireworks and the phrase, 'We The People Ride Together.'

Aerial photographs of Macy's 4th of July Fireworks show taken from an altitude of up to 8,000 feet
Let freedom fly! A photographer who doubles as a pilot was the highest in the Manhattan sky on July 4th — and The Post obtained his breathtaking aerial photographs of the 49th Annual Macy's 4th of July Fireworks show taken from a staggering altitude of 7,500 to 8,000 feet. Filip Wolak captured the stunning spectacle — as 80,000 shells launched from four barges on the East River — from above the controlled airspace, which is at 7,000 feet. Advertisement 'What makes it special was I was the only guy out there. I got the best seat,' Wolak, a native of Poland, told The Post Saturday. The astounding images reveal the brightly colored plumes of pyrotechnics forth from the river, surrounded by the panorama of the city. 'I've always been fascinated by the fireworks and of course, they're the best here. And I don't necessarily like crowds, so I find a way of watching from that point of view.' 'It's a high level of stress, but it's a good stress,' he said. 'And when I take photographs from the sky, I slow down the airplane to the minimum flyable speed which allows me to capture images that are not blurry.' The Fourth of July had some perfect beach weather in the New York area, and Olivia 'Livvy' Dunne wasn't going to miss out. The viral sensation and former LSU gymnast traveled to the Hamptons for a beach day, according to snaps on her Instagram account.
