BBC Radio 1 in chaos as presenters stop show to announce technical difficulties

Daily Mirror10-05-2025
BBC Radio 1 presenters were forced to halt competition calls from listeners after experiencing 'technical difficulties' during their Radio 1 Big Weekender ticket giveaway
BBC Radio One's Big Weekend event plummeted into chaos after the phone line competition application system completely crashed. Fans rushed to call the number in order to win tickets for the Big Weekend event but found phone lines had gone down, leaving them devastated.
Explaining the technical issues, Nat O'Leary told fans: "We are experiencing technical difficulties with our phone lines at the moment unfortunately so we cannot run the competition at the moment." In addition, Ore Olukoga added: "We can't but we will let you know as soon as we have the phone lines up and running again and we'll get the competition on very soon." Later in the show, the phone lines were back up-and-running again.

On the Radio One Big Weekend website, it instructed fans to call the competition phone line 03700 100 100 during a ten minute registration window.
Radio One phone handlers were set the task to receive calls from hopefuls and conduct "eligibility checks" which included asking entrants "how much do you want to win this prize?"
On the back of their answer, the handlers will then score the entrants' answers based on their "passion for the prize."
Following the initial elimination process, those with the highest scores will then appear on air to play the game "name the artist" music quiz.
And this involved fans identifying the music artist in a short clip with only five seconds to answer.
If then lucky entrant failed to answer within the allocated time, or answered incorrectly, they failed to win tickets to the coveted event.

The celebrity artists that are due to take part in the annual event include rapper Aitch, AJ Tracey, Inhaler, Wolf Alice, who will perform on May 24.
Back in January, BRIT award winner Sam Fender was announced as the headliner on the main stage, along with Myles Smith and Blossoms.
The annual music event will take place at Liverpool's Sefton Park over two days between May 23 and May 25.

Other artists performing on Friday 23rd include Tom Grennan, Biffy Clyro, Nia Archives, Confidence Man, Barry Can't Swim.
Myles Smith described performing at the annual event as "unreal". He added: "Big Weekend was always a dream of mine, and to be on the line-up again is insane."
Messy singer Lola Young, who has achieved global recognition, is also set to perform at the annual weekender and described that it was going to be a "messy" affair, which is a nod to her hit song.

Footage showed the 23-year-old surrounded by party-goers before they began shouting and shoving each other. The online celeb could be heard telling the group of men to 'calm down'. But the TikTok icon hit out after he was pushed. Boozed-up onlookers cheered and screamed as Sullivan let go a flurry of punches. The brawl, in front of dozens of British holidaymakers, was eventually broken up. Sullivan, who was livestreaming when the scuffle unfolded, has now been banned from the streaming platform Kick - and his video has been deleted. But the tough-guy took to X - where he has 130,000 followers - to say: 'Great night in Magaluf today banned off kick AGAIN for self defence. Joke.' The Essex-based streamer and TikTok star has over a million views on some of his videos. Watch shocking moment after TikTok star 'HSTikkyTokky's £220,000 McLaren supercar is destroyed in horror crash' He gained enormous popularity on TikTok thanks to his fitness videos and rows with other influencers. The star made headlines last year after he missed a court appearance for a boxing match in Qatar. He was meant to appear at Guildford Magistrates Court on November 28 charged with a string of driving offences, including failing to stop when he crashed his £220,000 McLaren in Virginia Water, Surrey. Dramatic pictures showed a purple McClaren 720S, that can go from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds, completely destroyed with black smoke rising from its bonnet. Police issued an arrest warrant at the time for the fugitive and confirmed he was on the run, saying they believed he had left the country after he was scheduled to take part in a Misfits boxing match in Qatar. A day later, Sullivan posted a video on TikTok in which he claimed he had flown back to Britain. He later took to X where he shared a photo of himself and said he would 'turn myself in tomorrow morning hold tight yeh'. A Surrey Police spokesperson told The Sun today: "Our investigation into the collision in Virginia Water on Sunday, 24 March 2024 is still active. "Harrison Sullivan is still wanted in connection with this incident, and our enquiries are ongoing to locate him. "We encourage him to hand himself in to police." The TikToker has been involved in other infamous bust-ups. He had a clash with punters after making his Misfits Boxing debut against a former reality television star last year. He beat Love Island's George Fensom in Dublin, but was then involved in scuffles with audience members outside the ring. Sullivan dominated the celebrity boxing exchange, knocking down Fensom three times and prompting the referee to end the fight, with him then confronting several members of the crowd. A brawl erupted when the TikTok creator appeared to spit into a mob of spectators, throw a punch at someone in his immediate proximity and attempted to inflict damage with a chair. The celebrity boxer also grabbed a chair and went to throw the object at others as tempers flared before a security guard stepped in at the last-minute to intervene. The Sun Online has attempted to get in contact with Sullivan for comment. 5 Sullivan's smashed McLaren after the accident

Norris first needed steri strips for the bloodied cut but then after a post-race night out took a trip to the doctors and had to get stitches. Norris enjoyed a well-earned boozy knees up after the British Grand Prix win and was filmed partying in a nightclub. Before his maiden F1 win in Miami last May, Norris had suffered a cut to his nose after an incident involving broken glass during a boat party in Amsterdam. The British driver arrived at the pre-race parade with a plaster over his nose after drinking with friends to celebrate Koningsdag (Kings Day). When asked how hard he partied after Silverstone, Norris said: 'I mean, I celebrated a home race win but then I also had to go get my nose fixed the next day. 'Someone landed on me, but then my head hit something else. I thought it was the trophy but I think it was a camera. New footage shows how McLaren broke 'priceless' Lego F1 trophy after Lando Norris won British Grand Prix The British driver enjoyed a two-week break between the British and Belgian Grands Prix to help his shnozz recover. In the title fight with his teammate Oscar Piastri, momentum is on Norris' side after winning back-to-back races in the same season for the first time in his F1 career. It has left him trailing the Aussie by just eight points in the title race, meaning he could re-take the championship lead in Belgium this weekend. Third-place Max Verstappen is 69 points off first-place and can trigger an exit clause in his deal if he is outside the top three after the Hungarian Grand Prix next weekend. The Dutchman is only 18 points ahead of Mercedes' George Russell in fourth. Belgium will host the fourth Sprint weekend of the season, so there are extra points available with eight up for grabs for the winner of Saturday's Sprint. 8 8 The British driver rushed back to the garage after the incident 8 Norris needed stitches the next day after Silverstone Norris added: 'I don't think that (Silverstone win) changes too much, honestly. It's so close between us, I don't think there's a momentum thing between it. 'It's a great thing. It gives me good confidence, but I wasn't necessarily lacking it beforehand or into the weekend. 'My consistency has certainly been better. I've been performing better. 'I think the work I've been doing away from the track has been paying off. 'I'm definitely happy with that, and I think it's more the consolidation of the work I've been doing has paid off. 'But the knowledge of momentum and all these things, I think it's overrated. I was just very happy with the weekend. 'I'm proud of it but it has nothing to do with Spa. Spa is a completely different place. No one cares who won last weekend. You kind of forget about it.'
