Prosecutors call for PSG's Achraf Hakimi to face rape trial

French prosecutors on Friday called for Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi to face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023 which the Moroccan international denies. The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court. "It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order," the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to their first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. Hakimi, who helped Morocco to their historic charge to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman. Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday. He denies the accusations. In Qatar, Hakimi was a cornerstone of the Morocco team that became the first African or Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup. adr/asl/ea/nr

Double medal delight for SA as Coetzé, Corbett shine at World Champs

South African swimming sensation Pieter Coetzé continued to make a splash in the pool when he bagged his second medal of the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore on Friday. Shortly thereafter, Kaylene Corbett delivered a dominant final 50m as she snatched bronze in the 200m breaststroke final. READ | SA's new swimming champ Coetzé: How a healthy balance away from the sport reaped rewards Twenty-one-year-old Coetzé came close to completing the double as he took silver in the men's 200m backstroke final. Swimming in lane four, Coetzé led from the start and turned with his nose in front at the halfway mark, but Olympic champion Hubert Kos of Hungary powered through the final 100m to edge the South African. Coetzé claimed silver to shave time off the African record once again as he touched the wall in 1:53.36, with Hos securing gold in 1:53.19 and Frenchman Yohann Ndoye-Brouard (1:54.62) completed the podium. In the build-up to Friday's final, Coetzé came in as a hot favourite after finishing as the fastest qualifier in the semi-final, taking 1.38 seconds off his African record (1:55.60) set in Paris as he powered to 1:54.22 to make his second consecutive final. Earlier in the week, Coetzé got South Africa on the World Aquatics Championships medal table when he bagged gold in the 100m backstroke final. 🥇 - Men's 100m Backstroke 🥈 - Men's 200m Backstroke Pieter Coetze picks up his second podium finish at the World Champs 🇿🇦🏊♂️ 📺 Stream #AQUASingapore25 on DStv: — SuperSport 🏆 (@SuperSportTV) August 1, 2025 Shortly thereafter, Olympic finalist Corbett won her first World Aquatics Championship medal as she finished tied for third in the women's 200m breaststroke final. Zimbabwe facing a big defeat in first test against New Zealand

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe (AP) — Zimbabwe is facing a big defeat in its first test against New Zealand in almost nine years. New Zealand dismantled the home team's top-order for the second time as Zimbabwe slumped to 114-6 at lunch on Day 3 – still needing 44 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Sean Williams (49) and captain Craig Ervine (22) showed some resilience Friday and combined in a half-century stand before both left-handers perished late in the first session. Williams was brilliantly snapped by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell down the leg side off captain Mitchell Santner's delivery that slanted into the batter. Fast bowler Matt Henry, who grabbed a six-wicket haul in Zimbabwe's below-par first innings score of 149, impressed again with 2-44. He beat the batters with wobble seam and was finally rewarded when he found the edge of Ervine's bat in the penultimate over of the first session and pushed the home team to the brink of defeat. Earlier, resuming on 31-2, Will O'Rourke (3-28) perfectly shared the workload of injured fast bowler Nathan Smith, who didn't take the field on Friday after picking up an abdominal tear on Thursday during New Zealand's first innings of 307. O'Rourke struck twice when Nick Welch (4) nicked the fast bowler behind to Blundell and then Vincent Masekesa (2) gloved a catch to Rachin Ravindra at forward short leg after he got beaten by variable bounce off the wicket as Zimbabwe slipped to 53-4. Williams and Ervine then dug in for a 57-run stand with Williams hitting six fours and Ervine also finding three boundaries. However, New Zealand dismissed both batters in quick succession and got into the lower-order before the break. Sikandar Raza was batting on four and Tafadzwa Tsiga was yet to get off the mark. The series is not part of the World Test Championship, but it is the first test between the two nations since they met in 2016 in the longer format. ___ AP cricket:
